Maybe they've realised they are rubbish at it! To be fair, maybe not last night in particular, but I'm sure I remember one effort from Ifill that was a shocker from quite far out. Other than Bertos's free kick, have we actually scored from outside the box this season?

And another thing...WTF is with our shooting from outside the box? Very poor ALL the time.

no-one looks confident shooting.

and another thing,  Bertos - you have scored your scorcher from a free kick this season. It is not going to happen again.

why does he always look for the long shot from a FK but not in the middle of play ?

So you are a crap player and the club says, we want you to go, you say no, I have a contract, the club says we'll pay you out, you say, yes my full price, or I am content to stay here and train (where else will they go and get the same money midway through a season). The club offers 75 %, you decide to take it, the club then has only 25% to offer someone else

Who knows where we are on the salary cap. If we are right up there there isnt much room to move

Its a slow Sat afternoon

"yeah sure, anything for the mighty phoenix that has treated me so well...Ill just go play in the NZFC or aussie state leagues for effectively free instead..."

Eh?

Who said anything about them going to NZFC?

Usually the way it works is we say"Look, you're not going to get a game here, ever. We think it would be better if you looked for another club. We'll pay you $x amount, cheerio".

Not really sure why anyone would be against getting rid of the dead wood in the squad?
If theyre not good enough to be playing for the phoenix, theres not a lot of option for them. Theyd most likely end up in the Aussie state Leagues,or be dead wood at another A league club if theyre lucky. Thats what i was saying.

And that X amount, still comes under the cap,we have to have 20 players, and we may as well have them for training purposes.

Its not like in Britain, where if you're released by a premier league club, you have the option of going to scotland and getting picked up,or by any number of proffessional clubs in a lower division.

EDIT: exactly right Hepatitis

Ok, the salary cap is a bit of a bummer in these circumstances. It's just frustrating to know these guys are there picking up a wage for doing nothing.

We can get rid of Chen surely, he is only on loan.

Anyone know when contracts are up for Ferrante / Mulligan?

Hepatitis - I imagine we must have a bit to spare in the cap? I was about to say we don't have a marquee (again) until I remembered what the marquee actually is!! Apologies for my blonde moment!

We may have something to spare in the cap, or not, I really dont know how much Ifill and Greenacre cost us

What I am wondering about is if we have the money to invest in a guest player. At some stage soon, we might need to get someone in just to get us across the line to be in the top 6. Or if we get there with this squad, to push on to win the league

Yes, someone to galvanize the squad at this crucial time would be handy.

I wonder what happened to Fred?

IMO i would rather a Solid centre back or centre mid than an attcking-minded Fred. TBH we are over loaded with Attacking-minded midfielders and would have to take out either Caceras,Bertos or Daniel to fit Fred in. What about Simon Elliot in the holding midfielder role for Vince or Browny. Anybody know any old(reasonably good) Aussie and Kiwi Centre Backs/Mids.

I know some people are gonna say if we have good midfielders why not make it better. I totally understand, its just i would rather sharpen up our defence.tomrewi2009-12-05 15:05:27

He didn't do much, but there were few chances in the game. Nearly scored still though.

Smeltz and McGlinchley were the worst kiwi players but I'd still rate their performances as a solid 7 each.

We need a striker.  Sergio van Douche if need be.

The crowd on the way out was very subdued...you could tell that everyone knew that that was 2 points lost. I thought we were very good for large parts of that game. We were dominating well before the sending off. don't forget melbourne are a very very good side and have won 8 out of the last 10????....many of them away games.

Agree on the formation change. Ifill is now playing centre forward....OK he has scored playing there but to me he caused much more damage when he played wider. You could tell he was getting frustrated....every attack he would scream for the ball and point to his feet for delivery but 9 times out of ten the play would go wide. ifill would then throw his hands in the air in frustration coz he knows all he is going to get is a looping cross which he has to fight as a 50/50 with the defenders.
He was devastating playing wide....lots of goals and lots of assists. Move him back!!!

Hearfield was a revelation at RB. The guy has speed and is a good athelete. He caused them all sorts of problems out wide...the sending off was a direct result of his speed. OK he ran out of gas second half but that is coz he has not played a full 90 for ages. plus his defense was OK.
Watch out muscat...you may be on the bench for quite a while.

ferante, mulligan and diego off contract end of season. with them and chen gone thats four new guys to come. Get on the phone to ifill and greenies mates and find some quality. Interesting to see alot of people booing at the end of the game. Is a draw the new loss?

That's good news at least.

Was Diego only signed on a 1 year deal?

One player who is probably 50/50 at the moment to re-sign is Hearfield. I'd like to see him stay, he can play pretty much anywhere on the park and a good utility to have. Has shown plenty of potential at times as well.

Don't think he's 50/50 - has been impressive for most of this season when he's had a chance. Sign him up.

And gets shredded by all the players at training, McKain in particular. Sort of feel sorry for him, but he really is quite poor.

I agree with you re Hearfield. The first time I saw him play I thought that he had the goods.
I reckon Ifill can play up the middle, but as you say the ball went wide.If the service had been good, to his feet it might have been a diffenent story.
Our defence once again was not good.
How you can concede a goal from a corner in the last few minutes is beyond me. It was just bad defending- of course there was no one on the far post.

Miller's brilliant but too injury prone. I love watching him more than just about anyone in the league but enforced retirement can't be too far away for him. StopOut2009-12-05 18:53:46

intersting 'character', i wonder what the story is with his walk out ..

perhaps the Mars Bars were not fried adequately

who cares if Miller is injured, get the guy over here and give him his own full time physio if we have to, the guy oozes quality and would be  a terrific provider from our strikers, his vision is the best in the league.

Also Ifill got a taste last night of what Greenacre has had to put up with all season, perhaps now he'll be able to give insight of how our strikers could be better provided..

Yeah he's hopeless yet they saw talent in him which is why they secured him on a loan deal. Give the guy a break. He's hardly been given time on the pitch. When he does, Chen tries his hardest. Easy to ridacule him huh.

Yeah, he hasn't had much of a chance. But from what I've seen of him at trainings. He struggles with his English, doesn't get on with a lot of the team and isn't really very good. Don't expect him on the field anytime soon, bar injuries.
