It is called the "Mexican" Wave because it was received worldwide fame during the FIFA Football World Cup in Mexico at the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, 1986. The wave was invented beforehand (e.g "catch the wave" ads) but it was at the Football World cup in Mexico that the name "Mexican" Wave was invented. It was believed that in 1960s, in Monterrey Mexico, during a football game between Tigres and Rayados, the wave was created in the half time. The crowd was anxious, and the organizers were doing games and throwing football balls as presents in the half time because players took a lot of time returning to the field. That made people start doing the wave. If so, then the origin of the Mexico Wave is a football one from Mexico.

Because the general culture of it in NZ is that its been done during boring lulls in rugby or cricket games. Of which there really isnt any in football,unless a player gets injured perhaps. Tegal2010-03-08 18:13:44

It is a football invention by football crowds. . . what's the point of being staunch like a pair of Rugby guys looking lost?

Actually it happens at anytime at overseas games . . . whether it is boring or not, so it was not strange at all. It is just people are not use to this atmosphere.

The Mexican Wave took off like a rocket in Christchurch. Didn't do it myself, it's just as bad as singing, "Ole ole ole ole" IMO.

I have never seen a Mexican wave at a football game anywhere other than in New Zealand (yesterday and the Beckham game), and I've been to games on three different continents (although admitedly not in Mexico).

It clearly predated the 86 World Cup in North America, though the origin is unclear. Some say NFL. Some say college sports. Mexicans claim they invented it well before the 86 cup. I'm sure some Canadians somewhere think it originated at a 1975 Maple Leafs Hockey game. England didn't become well aware of it until the 1986 World Cup and they began calling it "The Mexican Wave" as a result. In the USA, Mexico and Canada it is known simply as "The Wave" and people will not know what you are talking about if you refer to it as "The Mexican Wave" without describing what it is.

I was very disappointed with the Mexican Wave.  I was hoping it would die out in the Fever Zone (I was in aisle 16 where it was strong) but it was as strong there as anywhere else.  Maybe it was invented by a football crowd, maybe not, I don't care, it's just plain pathetic.  In a Central American football game yes, I'm fine with that, maybe even extend that South into South America - but try and leave it there.

It's pretty much the sign of a bored crowd, as others have said, as they tend to focus on it as much, if not more than, the football.

EDIT: And it doesn't matter if it's part of footballing culture (if it even is, I think not personally), it's not our culture.  Though that's not to say I'm opposed to borrowing bits of other countries footballing cultures.

In fact Simon and Andy Harper only had good things to say about us and NZ football.

Just watched the A-League highlights show. I know I was there but f**k that was a good game! Great chances at either end but we were the better team. 26 shots on goal to their 13, 15 corners to their 4. Branko needs a reality check.

Branko is a muppet. He ran his mouth before the game, and he had to talk trash after the game to keep his appearances up.

Same thing happened with the Bahrain coach running his mouth in November, he was nowhere to be seen or heard after the game.

The Jets did well to make the Finals, and the players showed good spirit in applauding the crowd as they left the field.

Branko's comments in the press conference after the game basically destroyed any good work the players had done on the pitch.

Never saw a Mexican wave in a game in South America, and I've been to a few.

simply put i can chant and watch a game, at 5 foot i can't mexican wave and watch a game.  5' is the ONLY reason i haven't got tickets in fever zone for 3 seasons as well!!.  love your noise but it is about the game! so aisle 23 it is, can join in AND see all the action

I can't believe there are people on here knocking the Mexican wave.
I thought the point of YF was greater crowd participation.

You're effectively saying:

Has nothing to do with "boredom", it's more the crowd getting into the atmosphere and participating/being heard & seen.

Sure, it has it's links with rugby/cricket but there's nothing wrong with it, imo.

Agreed. Not a fan of the wave but if people want to do it then why the f**k not? Gets the old folks involved etc.

The old folks hate it more than everyone else.
