before the game: "I don't care how we play, as long as we win!"

after the game in which we win: "that was sh*t"

Well Well Well.

Good fun to see 2 red cards against the opposition but, we did dominate them after that all over the park and failed to shoot on many occasions. All of the attack and the vast majority of the midfielders are guilty of taking 3 too many steps in and around the box when it comes to shooting. We seemed to have easily 15 or 20 minutes in the second half dribbling around the box. Someone needed to stand up and take a shot.
Crowds have been getting worse and worse all year, however money is tight at the moment and coming up to christmas everybody is busy, however if we manage to string a couple more wins together and get up into the top 4 the crowds of 10-12 thousand should be back, as for sunday games I never really liked them, friday and saturday night games were better.
Fred looked good but definitely needs to be more selfish and go for glory more often.
Paston is sh*t, quite frankly Moss is more of a loss than Smeltz, Paston seems lost and clumsy most of the match and was just lucky he was never really tested. As for the Penalty that was just dumb luck, it is really hard to save a penalty but just because he did doesnt make it any less of a fluke.

Great game, but I drank too much and the last 10 mins or so nearly killed me as I could not shake off the feeling the jets would score and get a draw.

Bertos=great. Fred good. Muscat pushed forward. Paston, hmmm he needs to stop the panic and think before he comes out. Sign Sander Westervald...

Just a few points, from one of the "have to lighten up and enjoy it" brigade:

1. I'm absolutely delighted we won
2. I didn't think we played particularly well. As a Phoenix supporter I assumed I was allowed to express my views on what I perceive to be bad performances as well as sing the team's praises after good ones. I have done both in the past and will continue to do so.
3. I thought Fred looked quality and can't wait to see him again cos I think he'll make a huge difference
4. My worry, given point 2 above, is that if we play as "well" as that against the Victory we will lose.
5. If I was the only person watching that game who, after an hour or so, was thinking that the game had 0 - 0 draw written all over it, then I apologise for my negativity.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

You were not the only one.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

The independent Match Review Panel comprising Barry Such (Chairman), Alan Davidson and Simon Micallef convened this afternoon to consider three red card offences  from Round 12 of the Hyundai A-League.

  • Terry McFlynn (Sydney FC) was issued with an R6 red card for "use of offensive, insulting or abusive language against a match official." The Match Review Panel imposed a sanction of one (1) match, which is the minimum sanction for this offence under the Hyundai A-League Disciplinary Regulations.
  • Joel Griffiths (Newcastle Jets) was issued with an R2 red card for "violent conduct when not challenging for the ball". The Match Review Panel proposed a sanction of two (2) matches, which is the minimum sanction for this offence under the Hyundai A-League Disciplinary Regulations.
  • Mark Milligan (Newcastle Jets) was issued with an R3 red card for "serious foul play". The Match Review Panel first considered a challenge to the red card made by Milligan. The challenge was dismissed. The Match Review Panel proposed a sanction of two (2) matches, which is the minimum sanction for this offence under the Hyundai A-League Disciplinary Regulations.
The Match Review Panel also considered the reaction by Karl Dodd (Wellington Phoenix) to the offence committed by Joel Griffiths referenced aboveThe Match Review Panel accepted that, as the matter did not escape the attention of the referee, it had no jurisdiction to intervene.

when you play 1 home game [ and lose that very poorly] in 2 months 5500 is a pretty good return. The Fixture's this season are so stuff up, that most people only half interested would never know when the Phoenix are playing next........ big crowd this week please or the Phoenix may have a problem...... I am bringing 2 extra this week ChopperHarris2008-11-24 21:09:18

What is the style of football being played? I dont think there is a style to be honest.

For starters...Moss should be in goal ahead of Paston any day of the week.
How Durante cant get a start at Cente Back is near on comical.
As for the midfield...well Im glad to see Ferrante playing again coz hes the best distributer in the team.
Great to see Leo injury free and going at players.

As for the rest...Joe Averages week in week out...simply not good enough at pro level of football.
How many of them get better with each game??? Very few if any.

Lets be honest...Do you even watch the games?

Dodd and Siggy were great at the back against Sydney so rightly kept their places.

I wasn't that impressed with Bertos or Smeltz to be honest (although Smeltz's goal was phenomenal).  I thought Muscat and Hearfield did superb jobs.

I'm feeling far more comfortable with Paston in goal.  He is a good player and underlined that by saving the penalty against El**ch (if anybody disagrees with me then watch his performances for the Knights).  His mo was amazing as well.  Just thought I'd point out that Smeltz and Dodd had some of the most feminine mo's I've ever seen and Paston, Muscat or Ferrante wins it for me.

Of course everyone on this forum has the right to dish out criticism and praise as they see fit, it's just that I felt that this time around, much of the criticism was thoroughly unjustified. I felt we were in control of the game from the start, and showed composure and patience to get the result we needed.

The reality of professional football is that even when you play against 9 players, it's still not that easy - the opposition's mentality completely changes, and it gets very difficult to break them down. But they generally get to tire down in the last 15-20, and we were professional enough not to panic before that just because we hadn't scored yet.

I know we're not the most attractive team to watch going forward, but that's the team we have. We're set up to grind results, and if you expect the kind of drubbing that teams like Barcelona dish out, then people are going to be disappointed a lot of the time...

And yes, I was always confident we would score in this game.

Sorry El, i have to agree with Jag here, we weren't really ever in control of that game, it was only thru sheer luck that we weren't 1 - 0 behind at half time. With the posession we had we should have been well ahead by the 65th minuite and yet we were still struggling to get the ball in a decent scoring position. I was seriously fuming by the 60th minute, anything less than a win would have been disatrous. I'm stoked we won, and please we fought hard, but you have to accept if we play like that against melbourne they will crush us!

Yep, every time I saw the replay I thought it was the worst challenge in the game (besides Griffith's effort, which can't be classed as a challenge or a tackle).
It was studs up, sliding in with hitting Paston the only likely outcome.

I think our players were great the way they didn't complain about tackles or rolled around feigning any injury. When Milly got marched for the tackle on Fred, our boy got up and continued, as contact was minimal. Any other keeper might have milked the El**ch challenge to get a red but Paston got up to continue. Well done and Bye bye Gao and his antics.

Well, they could have been 1-0 up because of Paston's incompetence. But other than that, they never really threatened us, 11, or 10, or 9 on the field. We knocked the ball around confidently, and showed patience...patience in these kind of games is important!

And how can we have all the possession, and not be in control of the game? We got the goals with Newcastle starting to tire, and finished up with a very solid win in circumstances that the players would not have expected (i.e. playing against 9 man for 40 minutes).

And the game against Melbourne will be a new game. We may play well, and lose. Or win. Or draw. Or we may play badly, and win. Or get hammered. Or draw. Melbourne could play amazingly well, or maybe they won't play as well as they can.

No-one really knows what direction the game will take until the opening kick-off, so it's unfair to judge a more than decent performance in unexpected circumstances in the light of what may happen in a game that's 3 days away...

I didn't see the possesion as a confidence thing, I saw it as a continuation of a game plan that works to a point but lacks the final shot on target. Of late we have dominated possession in a lot of our games, and many of them we've lost. To me we looked much the same as we have in previous games (excluding Sydney) where we've dominated the possesion but gotten very little for it. We managed to score the goals as Newcastle were tired and made errors in their own half - fist goal, came from a lost ball and a great cross. Second once again great cross but poor defence to let Troy get where he did unchallenged.

A wins a win, and I'm pleased we got two in a row, but I'm not prepared to forget how we've struggled against teams like Perth - we may be on the road up, and i hope that we continue to play well and fight hard.......My picks from last week had us beaten the planes and drawing with melbourne, then drawing with Adelaide....if that happens we can all be happy!

Didn't see much long ball at all tbh. Just bad crosses. Durante is the worst offender when it comes to that so expect to see more next week.

any update on the Gary Van Egmond "breaching his suspension" thing?? I think it's very sad what he did! If he did breach it, his suspension should indeed be extended for another week.
What the f**k does that mean that when the FFA "minder" leaves you start txting etc..!!! And also the FFA Minder sounds like a git..if he can't keep an eye on his man at the stadium, I wonder how "well" he looked after him before the game!
