It could be just my impression but Fenton looked like he is playing a bit more cautiously than I remember - it could be the relative lack of game time, but it could be something worse - a mindset that he better be careful or he does his shoulder in.  That would be likely to hamper his playing style; whereas Manny has the opposite approach (plus a suitably grim expression when he floors a player and looks at the ref).

He certainly looks very awkward when taking a throwin

Last week Fenton started at RB and Manny started at LB  He is the transplanted leftie when he is normally a RB. In this case, Doyle is a straight swap but if Doyle has two blinders, Manny wont be coming back in straight away so not sure what you are quite saying there J82.

Doyle has two blinders and regains LB. Manny moves back to RB.

Problem?

nah no probs there, I think Manny will come back from suspension without delay - Ernie sees hims as a mainstay of the team, I'd be happy for him to replace Fenton or Doyle.

This is a significant game - we are playing the last of the top 4 (for the first time) so it can define where we "should" end up - and if it has Fenton and Doyle starting then those young uns have huge pressure and will be targetted by Bling I'm sure.

With Manny out I am not a box of fluffies for this game.  We will struggle to get a point I think...

Oh no problem at all. I kinda assumed that considering he has dropped Doyle to fit in Fenton, he really wants Fenton in for that attack. Thus Fenton was kinda the preferred RB.

Doyle and Fenton doesn't fill me with a whole lot of confidence, especially after watching Doyle's poor performance for the reserves last week, albiet at CDM.

Wonder if Boxall might be an option? Let Louis bomb forward like he does and play Boxall a little more defensively.

Has Boxall played on the left for us at all?

Manny is a starting fullback. I think he's just as capable on either flank. Doyle is a trainee fullback. Reasonable on attack, still makes mistakes in defence. Louis gives us a lot on attack, but still a few jitters on defence.

JBS hasn't been mentioned by anyone yet?

But he played with more heart and effort than at least 8 others.

JBS was playing centrally though, not as a fullback. Didn't think he was too bad to be honest, probably one of our better performers in that game

If we all can't agree we should probably just play 3 at the back.

I would go with Boxall on the left and JBS on the bench. Aside from that don't change the starting XI.

why not bring Italiano on up front while we're playing players out of position?

Wait, did I miss something? What's happened to Doyle?

To be fair, I feel like we've given Doyle a decent amount of chances and he hasn't really fronted up so far. He's still learning.

So we'd rather dump him completely and convert Boxall to left back? Seems a bit of an overreaction to me.

Permalink Permalink

I'd say we should probably give JBS a shot, not Boxall.

given what we've seen so far this season it seems pretty obvious that Ernie will persevere with Doyle on the left and Fenton on the right rather than brining in Boxall/JBS. I'd like to see boxall back in the squad - I thought he did a great job on the right when Fenton was out. I guess though he's just not what ernie wants as a FB? Maybe when Siggy retires boxall will get a look in at CB?

Based on the televised WPP game JBS looked good, even out of position.
And Doyle was shockingly bad, although further out of position.

Not too keen on the idea of converting Boxall.
Would rather have JBS and Doyle compete for the spot.

so when does Boxall get a run-out; injury/retirement?..Should be rotating this season in preparation.  Tough call though; the passion and commitment of Sigmund or the leadership of Dura. ...

When Siggy gets a red, or if Fenton has a bad game or an injury.
Maybe also in next to Reira if Lia's not available, to shore up a win.
Still a useful and necessary squad member.
Just not our best left back.

same point applies to Boxall but not as LB more CB alternative.  I do agree that you dont fudge around with CB pairings.....nice problems to have this time of year!
