Unchanged 16 I'd guess, barring injuries. Gutsy performance by Rufer vs Newcastle, but I'd still prefer Nichols to start in his place.

Wondering why Fox didn't play for the reserves.

Fire up and grab another 3 points, would be a great start to the season and have the others wondering what and why.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

My bad, assumed it was in Welly for some reason.

If we happen to get up a couple goals up, would be good to see Doyle go LWB to see how he'd get on. Has a better delivery into the box than Cacace, which let him down a bit on Sunday.

Rudan talked about playing a different style away from home. (More defensive by the sound of it) So wonder if he will go back to a more traditional back 4 with 2 x DM's or if he sticks with wing backs.

Thought Cacace played well but agree his delivery into the box has not great. That being said we are pretty short in height up front. Getting in behind and balls played in on the ground are going to suit us better than lofted crosses into the box.

Thought we lined up pretty defensively v Newcastle anyway, so I'd expect to see similar.

I'm gonna be in Nelson for this - anyone know which pubs are likely to have it on?

Same 16 for me.

I'd even be happy with same 11 starting.

The way we set up I think was in part specificially designed to counter Newcastle - we took the pace out of the game and removed the counter option, which they showed with their late goal, they are very good at. It was defensive, but smart.

How many times did we see Mandi or Rufer any where near the 18yard box during the game??

I expect us to play a little more of a possession based game against the Roar with Rufer maybe playing slightly more advanced or Nicholls coming in to replace him to play more of a box to box role.

I'd quite like to see Burns get a start. Maybe Fox on the bench instead of Lowry.

I think Williams could do well on the big Suncorp pitch, would leave him out there - had a decent game, could be better. Also tracked back really well, which Burns isn't great at.

The New Street Steakhouse is the Tasman United bar this year so not a bad bet for a Nix game.

Might not be many bars open in Nelson at 7pm on a Sunday though!

agree, at the moment Burns is probably best for us as a very good sub option

By this statistic Brisbane is pretty bad converting chances, they should have scored 2.68 goals but only got one.

Out stats showed that we should have scored 1.84 but got two goals.

And CCM will win the wooden spoon if they continue like this, they are shooting from hopeless angles.

That was a great header from Georgievski.

This Brisbane stats could be actually bad for us, because when their 'luck' (statistic median) kicks in and they actually score the expected goals they ship us 3.

Rudan and his team have to be prepared and keep them away from good shooting positions.

Bit to early to be putting too much faith in these kinda stats based on one game, they are more use at working out longer term trends. CCM's defence is bad, so it's not surprising the Roar had plenty of chances. Hopefully we can do a much better job at limiting their opportunities than CCM did. We do have a miserable record in Brisbane tho.

Thought Cacace had a worse-than-usual game; wasn't beaten, and made some good passes, but too many mistakes. Way on the bench next week?

Newcastle's early missed chance - thought Taylor could've done more to shut Jair down. Otherwise, good in the air and a good target for set pieces. Doyle and Durante were excellent - quiet and efficient.

Lots of long balls by the Nix this game, which seemed to work out well. Williams and Krishna are both pretty good at harassing defenders.

Right foot set pieces - Rufer's delivery wasn't accurate. Think someone else should be tried - or just give them all to Singh.

Crowding the keeper at a corner - the ref didn't tolerate this but could be a different story with other refs - worth trying again? There's no law against standing your ground. Need a corner-taker who can put the ball in the right place though.

Don't agree that the long balls worked well, to be honest - they make no sense with the forward line we have.

Corner plan seems a waste... keeper too protected.

Also, look at out penalty, it came becasue Nicholls was making an attacking run into the box and was dragged down... more of this.

Agree that refs are always going to protect the keeper in those instances but Jets were very pushy in the box. I think the ploy of crowding the keeper got under there skin and unsettled them. Taylor was pushed over in the box just prior to the penalty being given. Could have been an argument that was a penalty also.

Agreed, I thought it worked in the end - you could tell that the Jets players were visibly frustrated.

I saw this one from the stands as he was near the ball.  I thought it was a penalty at the time.  Having now seen a full replay, I am convinced it was a penalty much more so than the one that was given.  What I am not sure with this VAR and penalties given late (like Sunday) is who can instigate the discussion on the run?  Is it VAR to ref "I have got something I think you should have a look at" or is it ref to VAR "while we carry on can you have a look at White 4 on Yellow 27 jumping up together just now. Is it worth another look by me"?

Could those more enlightened than me advise please

If it is the former, I cannot understand how the VAR saw the second but did nothing with the first.

it's not long balls directly at our strikers to make them compete in the air (apart from freekicks/goal kicks), the long balls played from open play were often into the channels, behind the fullbacks, for our strikers to run onto. our execution wasn't great and its mostly a low percentage ball, it does result in a couple of things - it keeps the jets defence deeper than they would perhaps like as a team (Jackson and  Georgievski had less touches in the attacking third than our full backs - Jackson like 2 or 3 touches in total in attacking third) and often if we weren't able to win possession the jets defence often had to put the ball out under duress from Williams or Krishna and a territorial gain for us.

Taggert was pants during week 1 - if he plays like that again I will be happy... if he finds his range it could be painful.

In saying that, I think our defence is far more solid than CCM's
