Corners are so hard. Let's not do them.

I like tautologies because I like them.

Pick out Lia.

If you consider that a considerable proportion of our very rare goals from corner play were scored from a header by that giant man-mountain, Ben Sigmund, just imagine how good will it be to have Boxall back one day, after he spends some time with a team that actually scores from corner set-pieces.

Either that, or we make it compulsory for Lia to stick his foot out every time there is a ball coming at him. The stats are all there.

Dreary pack of can'ts.  We just fudging scored from a corner.  Celebrate you pillocks!

That's a corner every two games this season.  Woohoo, we're going to win the league!

So has anyone asked Ernie why we were only sending 3 into the box and Roly was chipping it direct to the keeper? Perhaps it was a secret plan and he can't tell u because one day he swears to God it'll work.

I want my

I want my Vinnie tee

I want my

I want my Vinnie tee

Now Perth may be yo-yos but that's the way you do it

When you play for Phoenix, the A-League team

Lia ain't a striker but that's the way you do it

Make a shot from nothing, poke a goal for free

Now don't mention corners but that's the way you do it

Lemme tell you them guys ain't dumb

They may have missed more than you can count on every finger

They may have fudged up nearly every one

We gotta practice taking our corners

Practice taking set-piece kicks

But we'd rather score from weaving some magic

let's face it, it impresses the chicks

I want my

I want my Vinnie tee

I want my

I want my Vinnie tee

Since a lot of our rare corner action goals were scored from a header by that giant of a man, Ben Sigmund, imagine how good it would be to have Boxall back (after he spent some time in a team that actually scores from corner set-pieces).

No wonder we have such a horrid strike rate from corners when you can't be bothered to place players there. By cramming it as we did at the time of Lia's goal, the probability of a lucky toe poke or volley increases exponentially.

I see it the other way around.

We are poor at corners even when we have 5+ players inside the box, so why bother sending everyone up? Keep players in their usual positions and turn it into just another attacking play via a short corner.

you can keep that negative shark, ill start watching netball if we play like that. How about practicing and learning how to curl one in and put a team under pressure.

How is this negative shark? It's called knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are and working towards your strengths and minimising your weaknesses. We're not good at scoring directly from corners, thats a fact, so why throw half the team up and open ourselves up to a counter attack (like the game vs Sydney last season where Ibini ran half the pitch to open the scoring off one of our attacking corners) when you can keep your structure and play to our strengths like a patient build up play and getting the ball into the box that way.

apart from the fact that the more you send up, the more the oppo will send back - if we are considered 'exposed' when we have three men back during a corner, then we might as well pack up our stuff and find a new sport.

I never said we were exposed, just pointing out that it's smart to play to our strengths and try to minimise weaknesses. Surely you have to agree with that?

a corner is a strength. If we cant put opposition under pressure from it, then lets pack up and go home.

Cancel the license extension talks, fold the club.  Fenix says that it's not worth it because we don't score from corners very often.

Pretty easy now.  We just send up Lia.  He'll be marked by 4 players.

Pretty sure I've said this before, but we've never had a renowned headerer of the ball. At least in an attacking sense. Durante never scored for NEwcastle before he came. Sigmund only scored a small handful in the ASBP. Even our strikers don't have a reputation for it. Ifill, Greenacre, Brockie, Huysegems.

At a guess I'd say Tim Brown has probably scored the most headed goals in Phoenix goals and even then probably all of them were from crossed.

For me we are far better to play it short and go from there.

I agree, but our corners look like we spend 5 minutes at the end of training on it.  We usually have 3 or 4 different corner takers a game and really all we do is just "put it in the mixer" without any aggressive runs or any attempts at blocking or isolating our better headers.  I think we'd been so bad that we just assumed we would never score, I bet we have a completely different approach to corners now we've scored one and we'll end up with one or two more this season

Agreed, and it should be noted that both goals from corners in the Perth game weren't headers, and neither was Boxall's one at the end of last season. Even if you're not a team stacked with aerial threats corners can still be valuable attacking opportunities

Corners are also an opportunity to put a keeper under real pressure, just look at the number of times a keeper might duff a cross or similar. I think it is good to put them under pressure because they can gain confidence through making a few spectacula takes [a la aussie rules] - make them work for it.
