What about Brindell-South? I dont know if hes injured or anything but I think playing a natural fullback will add a bit of safety even though hes very inexperienced. Hes had a go before so surely he knows a bit of how to kick a ball?

Brindell South is terrible. I've watched him for the reserves and he gets caught out more times than I can count.

I just re-read the "R1 vs Perth Glory | Sunday 12th Oct" thread for perspective.

It's a fudgeing great laugh. Man, the angst some people pump out is amazing.

Looking forward to this game - someone else mentioned enjoying the challenge of doing it with players away on International duty. Have to agree.

He was playing CB for the Wee Nix, not his natural position but he is out with his dislocated shoulder so its a moot point.

I think the idea of playing A-rod at RB has merit if you don't want to change the midfield. He's been one of our best players consistently this season and can tackle well, reads the game well, and is unlikely to cough up possession in dangerous places. Would rather that than Hicks at LB to be honest - no slight on Hicks but he's not as good as Alex.

Hicks skills playing higher up the park are better than his skills as a last line you would suspect. I'd back A-Rod myself, or Roly and A-Rod in the centre...eh...

then reads rest of thread and finds out it's Blake...

Anyone thought of a 3-5-2. Drop to a 4-4-2 on defence?

Push siggy right when attacking. He goes central when defending and one of our 3 DM (Lia, A rod, Riera) move right. To cover the gap. That leaves Roly in the playmaker role, Krishna and the Grif up front with Hicks playing the false nine.

I also picked Appiah to start as a bit of a punt really - I did read he's fit again?  But I guess he's not had any reserves game time?  And I guess Hicks does deserve a crack, just didn't see him as the same style of high player as Burns/Griffiths/Appiah.

Anybody seen Appiah train or play?  Would be interested in how he's looked and there's very little on his own thread about him.

He played half a game in the 7 - 0 to Auckland City. I believe that is his only game time since the injury.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

why such a drastic change to what if I am not totally stoopid has been kind of working okay this year?

Fit a new player in with as little disruption as possible.

A 3 5 2 is just about as far away from what we have been playing as is possible

That is the stats for last weeks game. But I agree what you say, Roars fans behave like they had a chance, pfft, we would have made two more goals on the counter in normal conditions. And we will score two more than Sydney this week.

It means we won 10-15 away at Brisbane.

Crazy season for firsts.

Hate to rain on everyone's parade but I already know we are getting pumped, a friend of mine and avid nix supporter is back in the north island for this game and planning to come. He has NEVER seen them win live. He is a bad luck charm but a good bloke. I'll still be coming down with a car load of clowns to yell abuse at the opposition though. See you there.

Cricket starts 2.30pm Melbourne; which is 4.30pm our time.

So, anyone wanting to see both will miss at least the first 2 1/2 hours of the cricket.

There have been calls on twitter to move the Nix game to an earlier start time. 3pm was suggested, which would still be a 30 minute overlap.

How can we make this happen?

The only hope will be if Aussie get into the final too - this will give the FFA some motivation.

Having said that, i can't see it happening. As much as I want it to.

Wasn't it 4 days notice when they moved kick off for the Hutt Rec game v Adelaide?  There might be travelling fans that would not appreciate a time change.  TBH missing a couple of hours of the first half of the cricket is fine with me.

The Black Caps' win last night has captured the imagination of the country. At the Phoenix we wish them all the best and are backing them to go all the way at the MCG this Sunday!

Of course, the 4.30pm start of the CWC final on Sunday clashes with our own first v third match against Sydney FC at Westpac Stadium at 5pm.

We have been working with the FFA over the last few weeks in anticipation that this scenario would eventuate. It is not possible to reschedule our match or the play the cricket live on screen while we play. However, we definitely will be having regular updates and we are looking at other ways to make sure that fans attending the Phoenix game on Sunday can be across all the action at the CWC final.

The Wellington Phoenix are top of the table and charging towards the finals. We need your support this weekend as we take on Sydney FC - support Ernie and the players on Sunday!

Yeah. For the barely focussed, watching the CWC finale will trump a regular season football game.

Yeah, but the business end of the final won't happen until later that evening... barring unforseen batting collapses, but you know what I mean.

The forecast is for showers.  Given all the jinxing that's gone on in this and other threads, the CWC (whatever that is) and the weather I think everyone should stay at home.

Except me and my whanau.  I'll be wearing my Pass to Ifill T which so far has a 100% success record this season.

Well shows what I know, or Ernie is foxing.

I think that would be a hell of a dangerous call to put in either of those 2 rookies or a guy that has been injured for x amount of weeks with no game time.

Ridenton? Interesting

Any of those 3 options is a risk. But hey, if you're going to take a risk, why not when you're on top by 4 points right?

Wellington Phoenix Backing The Black Caps

The Wellington Phoenix are backing New Zealand’s BLACKCAPS this Sunday in the Cricket World Final and are encouraging fans to wear their Phoenix stripey, BLACKCAPS shirt or turn up in black to show their support at their match against Sydney FC at the same time.

The Phoenix will also be playing the cricket live pre-game and at half time, have live text updates on the screen along with ground announcements during the game.

Westpac Stadium will open the Mezzanine Bar after the game until the break in innings and we will be screening both our game and the cricket in the corporate lounges and on the concourse screens.

Wellington Phoenix General Manager David Dome said that the football club, currently in first place in the Hyundai A-League and taking on third place Sydney on Sunday afternoon, has been swept up in the achievements of the BLACKCAPS.

“The performance of the BLACKCAPS has taken New Zealand by storm and the Phoenix is getting in behind them,” Dome said.

“We are encouraging fans, if they are not going to wear their traditional Phoenix stripey, to come to our game to show their support by wearing a BLACKCAPS shirt or just black.

“Our game is broadcast around the world live and of course into Australia – having those pictures going back into Australia supporting the BLACKCAPS from Wellington would be quite powerful!

“We wish captain Brendan McCullum, his squad and the entire organisation all the best for this momentous occasion in Melbourne on Sunday afternoon.”

The Phoenix play Sydney FC in a potentially season defining match at the same time and Dome has asked Wellingtonians to get out and support the Phoenix in this crucial match while acknowledging the that the final is attracting a lot of sports fans’ attention.

Dome says that the Club has been working with the FFA over the last few weeks in anticipation that this scenario would eventuate and while it is not possible to reschedule the match, the Club in conjunction with Westpac Stadium, has come up with some solutions to make sure fans are kept up to date with the final while at the Phoenix’ game.

“We will be playing the cricket live pre-game and at half time, have live text updates on the screen during our game, the Mezzanine Bar will be open after the game until the break in innings and we will be screening both our game and the cricket in the corporate lounges and on the concourse screens.

“We’ve listened to our fans and we know that they will want to keep up to date on the cricket while they are at our game so we’ve tried really hard to ensure that fans won’t be missing out on any of the action on the day

“We would like to acknowledge Westpac Stadium’s excellent assistance in facilitating the initiatives as without them we would not have been able to respond to fans’ requests for cricket updates.”
