Why is Boxall not in Melbourne?

Wonder if they were taking a late flight to Melbourne, so they could play for the Wee Nix today

Would have to be tomorrow morning. Pretty sure the last flight to Aus is around 4pm.

CB cover of Roly and perhaps Manny at a pinch? Although Ridenton did play against Canty for a half. Doubt he would be used though at A League level.

Was really surprised to see Boxall play for the Reserves today.

that bench is a complete joke! where is cunnigham or boyd?? and do we really need all 3 of lia fenton and ridenton??

Fenton is a good utility player and can do the defensive work while providing something going forwards. I don't know why we have both Lia and Ridenton, if Rolly is our CB cover then we will miss too much in attack, Maybe Muscat in at CB.

Good to see Krishna there though.

Merrick has always said the bench is made up of those who show the most in training.

Three players on the bench who could add something going forward and one player who we don't think of as attacking but played the pass that headed us towards goal 3 last week.

Don't mind the bench. Don't think we'd had much out of Kenny so far. On the other hand, I think he's unlucky not to be starting. Boyd sounds like he's keeping the pressure on. Doesn't sound like Kenny has had a good week.

You also can't develop the next CB when he rides the pine. Game time for Boxall is important if he is to replace someone soon (assuming he is good enough)

Are you really suggesting that Kenny should be starting ahead of Burns or McGlinchey. Because today's game showed he can't play as a central striker.

Well, no. But he had quite a good season last season and scored goals often when we needed them, so that's the basis for saying that. Unlucky on the basis of having the gig last season and not doing too badly. IIRC he seemed to be able to play right midfield with a licence to get forward a bit last season? Now it's one of three out and out forwards...

I think that just shows we have recruited better players than him. Even in midfield, he's not as good as Gorrin or Bonevacia.

I expect that he won't be re-signed when his control expires at the end of the year and Merrick will look for an import to take up the central striking position.

If Krishna is still an import next year then our imports will be maxed out anyway, won't they?

I think Cunningham still has a lot to offer. Right now other players are playing better than him. He will definitely get his chance at some point with international duty, injuries and suspensions.

Apparently Krishna is nationalised next year so will be a local. If he isn't then Kenny would definitely be out the door.

Dont get me wrong, he's a decent player, but we have am abundance of players in that position now with burns and McGlinchey. So is it wise to waste an import slot on a bench player? We don't have anyone other than Brockie in the central channel.

I think Burns could play the central role. They swap around a lot any way. Brockie is still the most central of our forwards though.

Oh Bravo!

6 points from our first three games (best start ever).

Same starting XI three games straight, and if the same XI start today that will be the first time in Nix history that we have had no changes for 4 games.

A stellar performance against the Jest, in which the team really fired, with the midfield clicking on attack and defence...

Only 2 yellows in 3 games. Best in the league.

Weenix looked good yesterday, and Boxall had a good run.

...and you decide that Ernie doesn't know what he's doing, and that his bench is "a complete joke"?

Respectfully, disagree.

COYN. In Ernie we trust.

Ok

Using your same logic, Brockie did not deserve his bagging last year because the year prior, he was our top goal scorer. The year prior to that......

Players get picked for form and what they produce. That's the problem that causes a lot of coaches to get gassed is that they pick players on sentiment and notalgia and not what they are doing. Its why Alex Ferguson was so good because he had no issue punting a player that was a favourite. Perform and get picked or GTFO. I endorse what Merrick is doing and if you want to crack the starting XI, perform. From all accounts, Cunningham was a passenger of the Wellington Phoenix Premiership side in the ASBP (I feel a NRMAWSW-esk acronym coming on) so does not deserve his spot. He also has not done anything where he has come on as a sub, like last year, where he gave the side a bit of oomph. This year he comes on and its flat.

Totally agree with this. We have to sign an import striker next year with that spare slot cause there are plenty of pieces around that can fill the role that Kenny does yet there are no out and out strikers of quality. Krishna is a striker but lacks quality and Brockie is not a striker but I guess trying to make the best of what he can in a role that is not his natural one.

In a lot of ways our first 3 games were against reasonably similar teams, but MV will be a different kettle of fish. I'm particularly interested in how our mids will handle defending a team that plays at pace. I think this could be the sort of game where A-Rod steps up. Also, it's been said before, but we cannot afford to play a high line. We have the pace up front to hit them on the counter so there's no need for our CBs to camp on halfway, which has always seemed to be a massive issue away to the victory for some reason.

See I look at it like this

Ansell - injured

Delpierre - injured

Leijer - suspended

Georgievski - suspended.

Thats their entire backline pretty much

You now take out Berisha and Archie is going into it with a dodgy hamstring and with his pace, the instant he floors it, that hamstring will ping again.

The odds for point out of this are good. Whether we get them or not depends on how smart our back 4 are. The last couple of trips there when we have been smashed for 3 early on, we sat too high and they ran past us like road runner. SURELY we wont make that mistake again.

You would also hope to see some good work from Riera backed up by Gorrin and Roly, I feel more confident in our midfield supporting our backline than in the last few years.

Im not one to buy into history telling me its going to always be a high scoring encounter. And if it is, it'll be like it always has been  - with us getting beaten. A draw is a realistic and respectable result. A win would be fantastic, but I just dont see it.

Ignoring the fact that Cunningham hasn't actually got a proper run this season yet, of course. I don't think it's a case of Cunningham underperforming - he hasn't had a chance to perform ffs, so all we have to go off is last seasons form; which was good overall - it's more a case of Burns and weeMac both being undroppable and Cunningham not being a central striker to replace Brockie.
