I LOVE LAMP
Great win. I think everyone put in a good shift and we deserved the win. This will be exciting season if the continue to play like that.
So if Louis is out injured- Boxall to start and Ifill to the bench as injury replacement? That does leave us with no defensive cover...well, apart from Roly i guess...
Though I think Boyd has to be putting his name forward, especially if we are going to be playing the false 9 thing. That is something he did fairly well last season. I'd back him to be decent in that situation and combine well with any of the other players playing in the forward positions.
When Boxall came on he looked composed and did well. Didn't look worried and slotted right in. He's a quality footballer.
Did you think so, with 5 to go with us up 1-0 he was playing ahead of the ball in the corner. I thought that was very odd. Reality is we did very badly with him at right back last year, I still think Manny/Doyle is our best bet
Who was our right back when we went on the run? I thought technically he looked capable, he didn't look worried at any moment, he made the tackles he needed to and combined with the other players well. It wasn't Kenny or Benji coming on at right back. I felt able to relax about right back. I also thought he did well going forward.
Despite the win - and it was a good one in the end - I still don't think we are set up right. Roly was pretty obviously more effective in the middle of the park; perhaps Krishna will get a run in the team as a reward? Really think that Burns and WeeMac need that support to be effective. Also think that Rod and Lia seem to be getting in each others way half the time. Ernie doesn't yet trust A-Rod out there without 2 experienced heads next to him in Riera and Lia.
Credit to Burns, though - he had a pretty shocking game overall (too many heavy touches to count) but he popped up when it counted.
Shocking penalty - much worse than Brockies. Dadi-esque, you could say.
Good win, but doesn't paper over the cracks we've seen these last couple of games - hopefully it will give us confidence to move forward.
Pretty good summary. Awful to watch for the most part, when we finally put a striker on, we scored. I hate the way we set up, narrow, strikers too far apart. But we won, as someone else said. It aint pretty to watch, and at home Id like a more adventurous approach.
I'd love to see some forward runs from midfield, players moving between the lines. Now we've lost Fenton we'll need another outlet, he gave us some width
Want to see both late runs into the box and the midfielders (Roly, Rodriguez and Riera) carrying the ball at their feet going forward- when they have the space I guess though!
Would McG benefit from being further back? The Roy/Burns goal was how you want a false nine situation operating- I think Boyd and Roy could play that wide forward. I'm not sure about Kenny- haven't seen much from him, but he is quick and scores goals, though we've heard he's not been the best this season.
Bonevacia looks like a champ, but also would he get more play deeper in the midfield? His impact was limited at times (though the goal was a glorious moment), unlike say the first game.
Louis prognosis? Poor guy can't get a break.
i am glad i made it to the game 2 rides about 1 minute apart got me to wellington much earlier than i expected just over 2.5 hours getting home again was the hard part got a ride to sanson with matthew then got stuck hitched under a streetlight for a couple of hours with no luck then walked to just before turakina which took about 5 hours finally got a ride about 7 am and got home at 7.30am but it was worth it a win is a win.
1. i am a little bit stupid
2.and i had no cash spare so decided to hitch and make it a free trip

Great win. First half was not great to watch and I thought they looked more dangerous. We seemed really toothless when we got into the final third and didn't seem to have many ideas. Second half was great and we definitely deserved the win. Great timing with it coming 20 seconds before shirts off too, although the usual "aaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy" when they come off had to be a muted as it looked like they were about to score and have shirts go straight back on! Shame about the penalty but thankfully they didn't equalise. So guess that makes the Phoenix the best team in "Asia" now.
Great noise from the Fever zone all game I thought, and in aisle 24 noise was the best it's been this season too. Different kind of crowd coming to a Friday night game maybe, or perhaps a bit more booze drunk pre-game. My mate who took my partner's season ticket (with her out of town) enjoyed it and said he will probably go to the next game.
Made it along to Bethel Woods for the first time afterwards too. Didn't know anyone but was cool to see the team and shake hands with Ernie and several players too and congratulate them on the win. Was interesting to see them all driving themselves there and not arriving together on a team bus. Left shortly after the speeches as I had to be up for 8.30 interclub tennis this morning!
Lots more young teenagers (not the older, more twunty ones) and a good number of families (surprisingly).
Comedy(ish) bit. Three drinkers in front of us had given up any pretence of watching the game. They were locked into a very animated chat. When we scored they didn't react at all just carried with their chat....
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.
20/5/20
is moss not playing for the all whites?
No
A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen
Happy with the win. A few stray passes and lack of communication from players in the 1st half. Second half way better. My boy enjoyed the night for the following reasons:
1. donuts
2. Nix won
Was a little disappointed with only 7000 at game, but those who were there made a very good noise. Was in the zone for the 1st half then around by alsie 12 for 2nd half.

No, Frankie.
shitty to hear that fenton has dislocated his shoulder again. any one knows how bad it is?
Well in to that kid in the aisle with his shirt above his head.

4: I thought that while Fenton played well and put in a lot of yards, Jesus the amount of times I screamed at him to whip the ball in was phenomenal. He did not beat his man all night. Some of you think he did but watch the tape again. Never beat his man once and I think its cause he does not have the pace to do so. If that's the case, why keep repeating? Why not whip it especially when about 3 times, I counted at least 2 yellow bodies in the box.
What is the point in Fenton crossing for McGlinchey and Burns when they have Spiranovic and Topor-Stanley?
Grumpy old bastard alert

If we started blasting shots from 30 yards out, (lia-stylee), zinging over the goal, you'd never hear the last of it on here.

TV3 gave the game a grand total of 35.5 seconds of coverage

No, not at all. Went on our own freewill......escorted by fever elite, something about clapping and singing out of tune:)

Agreed. We are all nicely organised, but so are the opposition and for much of the match both teams play it around nicely without ever getting anywhere. Goals are scored by creativeness and speed in the right places. Everyone seems to want two touches every time. Three or four first time touches can open up a team just like that , by not giving the defence the time to adjust. Its all too slow and all too predictable.

That is better than Radio NZ National, which did not mention it at all in their extended news sports bulletin next day (if they did it was when nobody was listening). It pisses me off to see their anti-ALeague bias, since they cover minor EPL results as if it was something we are dying to hear about and could not look up ourselves, usually just after rugby, netball and cricket but before cycling and the Breakers.
Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Ernie's been got at by Declan.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.
Phoenix fans. We have to win them over one fan at a time.

Some good points in there. Thought the focus on a central defender bringing the ball out was a bit odd, that's not a massively difficult thing to defend against if you get your screening in midfield right. Interesting in each of those three photos where we are supposed to be pressing in midfield Lia is in space away from his man! Louis is going to be a big loss, it may mean we need to play shermy just to get the attacking outlet.
Also, made me think, under Merrick we do play much more along the deck etc but it can all get very ugly/scrappy. Still the best way for us to win against teams with "better" squads
Normo's coming home

Seems like this new formation with one less attacking player and one more midfielder is the way we are going to play from now on.
"We have changed our formation of late, starting with the Melbourne Victory game where we played with more midfielders," ...
"It took us a bit of time to adjust but we had a week to work on it before we played the Wanderers at the weekend and it seemed to click.

Yeah. In both games Burns has blocked off their left CB. What that does is ensure the opposition does down their right channel, so once we win possession, there should be more space open for Fenton to attack their left side.
But does it work without Louis?
Have we heard the prognosis? Is Louis out for the season?

I'm sure that Tim from Australia Scout had just read this: http://leopoldmethod.com.au/melbourne-victory-2-0-wellington/
I have noticed that we have been caught out a few times with the winger of the opposition dropping creating space for their FB to attack with balls played into that space.
