What I think the last few post show is that people support/watch teams (or don't) for various reasons. And also highlights the difficulties the Phoenix have in trying to get a regular 10,000 crowd to attend. While winning clearly matters, are these people likely to turn into season pass holders. Some will, but most won't.

Personally I've always felt uncomfortable about the 'where we're you when we were shit' chant. If somewhere near me that I knew tried to start it, I'd like to think I would get them to pull their head in. But unfortunately you can't control anyway, as much as an Elite group would like to.

So what would be your growth strategy Dale and how would get some fan input into governance decision making e.g. as an equity shareholder? I posted a new thread reasons to be cheerful btw.

Equity shareholder wouldn't work here. Not enough number for it to work. If we can only get 3,500 people to pay $200 for a season ticket, are we likely to get many to buy an ownership stake in the clubs for a couple of thousand. Think it's unlikely.

I think the other factor is that the quality of the A League has got better, but a lot of people who were put off years ago haven't seen the quality improve. Things like WSW winning the ACL and us and Sydney beating West Ham, players like Villa and ADP playing in it, the size of crowds in the Melbourne and Sydney derbies, all point to a league that's delivering better quality entertainment for the casual viewer than it did in its early days

I've certainly noticed an increased level this season, not just from the Nix but across the league and makes me want to come along more. As a football fan, I have a lot of teams I follow in various competitions (some more than others) - Liverpool (card carrying international member), Dover AFC, St. Pauli (thanks for that one Golly), Nix, Sounders. I have a times found A-League hard to watch because of style of play more than the skill level but things seem to be changing for the better. Again, I thoroughly enjoyed my first game in quite some time and it looks like most hardcore Nix fans welcome any and all support.

The local connection is crucial, as several others have pointed out. Having followed a disastrously shite English Div.3 side for years as a kid, we got used to mostly crap football. But......occasionally......my team did something epic (like a decent FA Cup run) and the level of pride and involvement of the whole area lifted, more people went to games again etc. until they reverted to type again, and became shite, and then the faithful still kept going. Surely similarities for the Phoenix?

THIS is the critical impact on crowds that the Welnix did such damage to a couple of years ago, taking too many games away, even threatening to remove the club from Welly, and why I felt so strongly about this.

The local connection is vital. If the club gets good results the crowds will  gradually increase, and the regular numbers will increase too.

When I was a kid nobody ever asked what we were doing on (most) Saturday afternoons- you knew all of your mates would be at the football.

By accident a long time supporter of the best teams in the world: Germany and Bayern Munich. You choose a team and then stick to it. In the end it is all the same emotions on and off the field, passion is passion. For me it's no difference if Boatang stops Messi or Sigmund tackles Neumann, Mueller or Brockie scores, both brings joy, it is the same fight. If someone says he is a better fan, bullshit!

All that said, I quote Ernie, the Nix has to get the winning mentality in their head. No real excuse to loose tomorrow, they are maybe a better on paper and forums, the head could make the difference. I don't like to go into deep into analyzing NZ mentality, but people here like the underdog image and then are happy to excuse failures with it.

I wonder if chants that can be viewed as sexist (I reckon they are) should also discouraged (I think they should and I don't participate in it).

One of the worst experiences was giving the Nix another shot a few year back, went to a few games and they made a finals game. Lots of fence sitting fans turned up, an opportunity for them to get a great experience but instead a large portion of the YF crowd chanted "Where were you when we were shit?" - humorous to the faithful, a bit of a kick in the balls and a negative experience for those who could have been swayed. It's ironic that those who cry EuroSnob tend to be FeverSnobs. I find being a fan hard to just 'turn on', you have to feel an affinity with a team, the experience last weekend went a long way toward that thanks to some great people I met, a pity not all just welcome a new potential fan to fill a seat, buy some beers etc.

Sorry, but for the people that have supported the Phoenix (and Knights, and the Kingz) from the beginning, they do have some right to chant that - and even then it's quite obviously with tongue firmly in cheek.

Anyone that is a) in Wellington/from Wellington and b) a football fan has no excuse for not supporting the team and at least getting along to a few games; especially if the reason is because 'the football isn't good enough'. That kind of apathy is why we are struggling for crowds, not because a handful of people are put off by humorous chants. Playing like Barcelona isn't what it's about - it's about having a local team to support that you can truly feel like you are a part of; and in this, the Phoenix have done pretty damn well I reckon.

Anyway, i'm envious of people that get to go along to the Caketin on a regular basis to watch us play. I only get to watch us get demolished in Melbourne :)

No excuse? That's a pretty narrow view based on your own personal preferences and situation. Travel & overall costs, place you live, time pressures from family, work and other commitments. For me to make an effort, I needed to be given more of a reason to come along than other more dedicated fans. I would never say "How can they be at the game on a Sunday night when they have work/school tomorrow?" just as a hardcore fan shouldn't say "You have no excuse for not being here, the rest of your life isn't that important".

As a big supporter of the Wellington Firebirds for years there was thought of berating crowds for turning up for finals cricket in the early 2000's after being a core of limited support through the regular season games. I was just happy that the fans were turning up, showing an interest and maybe more would come back next year.

While the chant if far from the biggest problem and apathy is a concern, nothing changes apathy like a bit of entertainment and entertainment at it's finest is finals football, something the Nix have been a million miles away from in the past few years. A better team, showing some real direction and style has re-ignited my interest along with some of the great Nix fans I met on the day.

I had a heated discussion with an Everton fan tonight at work. Goes on and on about them and turns his nose up at the Phoenix and A League. He was fully expecting EPL quality ffs. Even the English Leagues had to start somewhere and I bet they were shit too. Mind you i also know some that cant let Booby Moore and Charlton  go either. Sure they were good but time to move on into the new century.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Yeah to put it bluntly there is a active YFCJ ( Yellow Fever Circle Jerk).

Chant's like

"Where were you when we were shit?" are born from the CJ. They are only amusing from inside the CJ. Fairly typical behavior.

They feel entitled and have superiority fantasies just because they may have been on board early in the piece and protect their little sand castle by attempting to make everything outside the CJ, inferior in some way.

They don't seem to be very bright as they do the opposite of attracting new fans.

For example, imagine I owned a shop that had grown from nothing. Now my original customers make all new customers feel inferior just because they are the originals, what would I think of them doing that?

Tossers.

A lot of these YFCJ types have no nous. eg. " Let's act exclusive, piss off the newbies and families and then go on our forum asking why crowds are shit."

They even do this when the Nix travels to provincial centres. A lot of bagging the town after the game. Again, not very bright. New fan prospects could easily read the forum and what would they think?

Tossers

Forum wise, if anyone speaks of obviously flaws in the team, tactics or something that's outsides the YFCJs understanding, someone from the YFCJ will bag them out without construct. If there are a few of the YFCJers online you will getting figuratively covered in their self righteous splooge.

Reminds me a little of cult victims in denial.

And they for the most part are the best ad to grow the game, or the worst.

Phoenix the business is running at 65% of breakeven. By the way, breakeven is crap. A bit like being happy with the Nix finishing 6th out of ten teams just to play finals, even though they have no show and call it a successful season.

Like being happy to only ever get clothes on HJs

The YF for the most part need to get their hands of it and start being more inclusive.

When was the last time YF printed one page of 'family friendly' chants and gave the whole crowd a copy.

Even if only a few join in that would be a win.

Three good chants are better than 10 half arsed ones.

3,500 more people. Where are they. The 4,000  have come and gone

It would be interesting to know the spectator pretension rate. I bet it's not good.

"Anyone that is a) in Wellington/from Wellington and b) a football fan has no excuse for not supporting the team and at least getting along to a few games; especially if the reason is because 'the football isn't good enough'. " 'the football isn't good enough'. "

Is a very good reason. Money and the value it gives is not the same for a fan (fanatic) as it is for the spectator.

And spectators are what is needed to turn a profit.

" That kind of apathy is why we are struggling for crowds, not because a handful of people are put off by humorous chants."

YFCJ?

Apathy of others. Really?

Humorous chants. Really?

" Playing like Barcelona isn't what it's about "

Well going to the ridiculous really doesn't help. I think people would be happy enough to see some football, some skills and foremost giving 100%, which often is not the case.

All bad is not all the YFCJ.

The promotion of the Nix in Australia is non existent. A million kiwis in OZ. Even a small % conversion would give needed $'s in merch. My impression from years in Wellington that the Nix management is always a little half arsed compared to the promotion aussie teams give themselves.

Anyways the whole wellington shit box needs to sharpen up or

1. The team will move to Auckland or

2. The team will move to Australia.

Hey maybe then the YFCJ can get on the forum to blame everyone else that pro football is no more in Wellington.

printed chants at the first home game, handed them out.

Have chants with animated videos on the free app.

Held meetings that anyone was welcome to.

Lots of people getting to know each other before and after the game, especially at bethel woods.

There has to be some sort of exec to ensure things get done, but honestly everyone is very open. Particularly this season we've been very inclusive I reckon.

Mods on this forum from the "circle jerk" you mentioned have openly said they don't like the "where were you when we were shit" chant, yet you blame it on the entirety of yellow fever when a few people chant it a few years ago?

There are some legitimate gripes and things that give people the perception of elitism. I think that is being recognised and addressed big time this season. And good on everyone for that. But I also think there are some people who enjoy and revel on standing on the outside throwing stones on what they imagine to be the inside. These people never offer anything constructive, and when asked to come and join for a beer to discuss never actually front up. If you go up to a lot of yellow fever, say hi and have a beer they're all very accomodating. I know, I've done it many a time with many people on this forum (and those feverites not on this forum).

Give it a go sometime. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

That kind of apathy is why we are struggling for crowds, not because a handful of people are put off by humorous chants. Playing like Barcelona isn't what it's about - it's about having a local team to support that you can truly feel like you are a part of; and in this, the Phoenix have done pretty damn well I reckon."

Jesus Christ , what a rant. I guess I'll just sit here in my CJ splooge and nod politely. You realise that you going on a rant and separating the fanbase into two groups is perpetuating what you're apparently rallying against , right?

The football not being good enough is only an excuse if you have something better to compare it to; hence the Barcelona comment. Selling a club to fans based on the quality of football provided will never work because that changes week to week and coach to coach; especially in a salary capped league. What needs to be focused on is community engagement - we are still a new club,  it does take a while to become ingrained in families - and selling the experience of coming to a game. The fans, the fever, the atmosphere. It is unfortunate that our only option is the Caketin though everyone realises that already!

I won't even comment on the apparent lack of advertising in  Australia considering our stringent budget..

Too many excuses for not going to games and the general apathy of the NZ sporting public is what's killing crowds - have seen it at the rugby and any other game not involving that team called the All Blacks.

Being considered a Eurosnob is exactly the thing that is off putting and for all the great Nix fans, there's a few who think that 7 years fanship give them some kind of right to judge.

Question for you aussiekiwi. Where were you when we were shit? Busy sitting at home slagging off the fever and the Phoenix about how we exclude everyone else and how our quality of football is shite and we should be playing like one of them fancy euro teams. Yes, the chant may have been harsh, however, if you can suck it up for a couple of finals games, then why can you not go to a couple of regular season games and cheer the boys on to get to the finals. Same goes for the Lions (who could have used the support of fans and supporters) and the Canes. And please don't answer this with people like me are the reason you did not go. Because before you found out we are a bunch of circle jerkers there must have been other reasons what are they?
