Billed as Kosta v Marco.  *

Also a gigantic fan photo after the match. That will be fun if we get another pasting!

From the facebook page

*For the next seven days, we'll unveil a new facebook cover photo featuring a different player pairing as we prepare to take on Melbourne Victory on Saturday 19 November at Westpac.

Stadium inspection happening tomorrow morning. Playing surface itself is fine - but need to check damage to the stadium itself to make sure it is safe for people to be in.

I'd say it's unlikely the game will go ahead.

word on the street is that the two sides will just take part in the 12 Pubs instead - with a dance off at Danger Danger deciding the three points

I'd imagine the inspection would happen pretty quickly and we should know by tomorrow, engineers are pretty bloody fast at opening structures, and the stadium was engineered by one of the top firms in the country.

fudge I understand that it may have to be cancelled, but I will be absolutely distraught, been saving up for weeks for the trip down, 12 pubs and the game, (student flying down from Auckland) if it's postponed I will have to miss it

I feel for you Jaickin,  you could talk to the airline you're flying with and explain the situation (once you know if it will be postponed) and see if you can get a credit or swap the flights and waive the change fee.  Worth a shot to ask.  Same goes with accommodation if you've booked somewhere.  There might be some victory fans who will be making the trip and will be in the same boat as you.

I'll personally be gutted if the game is postponed since it's the last one at Westpac for 2016, and I'm unsure if I'll be making the home away from home trips.  Safety of the patrons will be paramount.

You could talk to your airline (and hope they aren't jetstar).

Would the FFA cancel or postpone? They haven't been inclined to do things like that in the past. How likely would it be to move it to the ring of dirt? That's probably the closest stadium that can light the game for TV?

They would postpone. They've done so for weather affected games in the past, can't see them moving the game but still playing it on Saturday. Far too hard to organise TV etc with just 72 hours notice.

The FFA will probably move the game to somewhere they think is neutral - Geelong.

A postponement is a good outcome for the Phoenix from the point of view that it means we don't suffer from players coming back out of an international windows and they get an extra week of rest. It is not necessarily a bad thing.

cooks gardens in wanganui is a better option than the ring of dirt, will not happen though.

Based on my experience living in Christchurch and having read of the Westpac stadium's preparedness for earthquakes, I'm thinking the stadium will be okay.

You can never be 100% certain until a proper engineering inspection is done but the strength of the earthquake as it impacted Wellington in terms of significant factors like ground acceleration etc. was much less than experienced in Canterbury in February 2011  - you were a long way from the epicentre of Sunday midnight's quake in Wellington. We were much  closer in Christchurch and the Sunday midnight quake was not strong enough to cause any significant damage here.

I'd think that the stadium should be built (and the ground beneath it prepared) to withstand much larger impact quakes.

A really major damaging quake is quite a different thing to what you experienced in Wellington this week.

Maybe that can be our tactic in the future when the All Whites are playing at the same time...saying our stadium is unsafe after an earthquake, flood, etc so we don't have to play without our international players...get the games postponed ??

Game postponed.  Announcement here

Anyone know how long it will take for them to find a new date for the game?

Christchurch was closer to the epicentre of this one but the energy got directed north towards Wellington because it occurred in the same tectonic plate we are on. Christchurch is on the other side of the plate boundary. The shaking here was stronger - not anywhere near as strong as the Christchurch quake was there but still strong enough to damage modern buildings and cause liquefaction around the port, which is where the stadium is.

Edit: here's a map of the shaking intensity which shows how it was worse in Wellington than Christchurch despite being further away

Interesting for those who were around when the RoF was built to know: how bad is the damage? I.e. was the stadium well designed for earthquakes?

Another important question: 12 Pubs, after Christmas? Set in Auckland? Cancelled for this season?

Correct. Building I work at across the road (Stats House) is out for at least three months, maybe a year. So, not surprising regarding the stadium.

I know, I know, its serious!

So with the extra 90 minutes, will change to 15 pubs, right?

There has been a fair amount of damage across the road though Pete. They will be being very careful with this I'd imagine.
