''I just have to say sorry because it's not acceptable,'' Sigmund said.

''I've got a young son and my son was watching the tele. That probably hurt me the most, [for him] to say 'where's daddy gone?' I've been red carded so it's not a nice situation and I had to explain to him when I got home what happened and I'm not proud of that.''

''Obviously I'm a passionate Kiwi man... It was just pure frustration from my part and I just wanted to get the team geed up, you know. We're a team that's been proud for five years now and I just felt we just didn't perform as we should as a New Zealand team. I tried to gee the boys up but it just went wrong.''

Just watched the clip and I'm happy with that. He's apologised, fronted up in time (considering travel etc). Hopefully he takes the lesson from it.

Though Ben's behaviour was bad by the relatively restrained standards of Alll Whites of the last twenty years, lets not get carried away like many on Facebook and Twitter who only watch "the big games" every four years or so and so are shocked by such things, never having been exposed much to the theatrics and occasional nastiness of European or Latin American football. Many would be surprised to learn that the Brazilian leagues are the dirtiest in the world despite the undoubtedly attractive elements also found there in abundance.

Brazil of course had Edmundo "the Animal" in he 1990's, one of the most violent internationals from any country.

BEN LOOKS LIKE A HALF-HEARTED STOMPER COMPARED TO THIS STOMPING IN TOP-LEVEL FOOTBALL:

Here is a worse one by Pepe of Real Madrid on Messi of Barcelona, 2009: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz5-_I-VmTQ

and in the 2010 World cup by Melo of Brazil against Robben of Holland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tl0k_QALeN8

The head is targeted sometimes. Here Totti is targeted: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVvtm6nzCVw

and here in a Canada v USA women's u-20 match: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yf1qjIf_oH4

A relatively small number of players have anger and discipline problems and they behave violently in public sometimes, just like the rest of the population.

can't defend the action or the fact that it looked pretty intentional - but you don't have to hate the man forever.

We all make mistakes, it takes a man to stand up and take responsibility for his actions and Siggy has done just that. Manned up and apologised as well as taking responsibility. Respect to him. No one condons his action at that moment, not even himself.

Siggy might not be the most technical player but his enthusiasm and desire to win are a major factor.

Pitiful apology. He should have been down on his knees begging my forgiveness, Begging, crying, howling, slobbering, sorry not good enough

Yeah! so he apologised. Big deal, what else was he supposed to do....tell everyone to F**k off because it was intentional?  It was the standard yes I'm sorry, yes I let everyone down etc etc. It was apology 101, straight out of the PR book.

I'm happy he did apologise but all this gushing about how great he is because he manned up is just crap IMO. He had no choice. NZF would have been on his case to front up. What I want to see is a vast impovement in his attitude for the rest of his career. He has history with this sort of stuff. He has history of cheap shots when players have their backs turned( Kruse incident for the AW's, running 30 metres against Jets to hit someone from behind) and now this stomp. As well as letting himself down his getting sent off lets his teammates down as well. I don't want him anywhere near the AW's for the playoffs....he's too big a liability.

We all admire Siggy because of his big hearted attitude on the field. But he is 32 now, he was poor last season, he has slowed down considerably...he is at the end of his career. What we want to see is him finish his career with everyone admiring his contribution to the game...not being known as a thug.
