I'm glad this has been raised because now that I've moved away from Wellington I'll be watching far more games on tv. Every time I watched a Nix replay or an All Whites game it was excruciating listening to Dewhurst and De Jong to the point I would mute it. What annoyed me the most was the serious lack of knowledge about the teams and even just the game of football sometimes. I would put myself somewhere in the middle range in terms on football/Nix/All Whites knowledge and I managed to pick out numerous mistakes by them in every game they called. Others have stated further annoyances about them which I agree with so the simple task of a bit of research from these two wouldn't help too much, especially because they have ruined their reputation with most sky football viewers. If they aren't given the boot soon I will be looking into syncing up radio sport to my tv picture without a doubt.

Fuck this stupid game

Also I think GGW is the obvious choice and Piney as well, although I'm not sure if he'd be available/interested in the change. Both of these two would be supurb because of their knowledge and passion. GGW is proven on TV and I think Piney would make the adjustment relatively quickly, it's only a matter of realising that you're not painting the full picture, rather accompanying the picture with commentary. Imagine the stat chat from these two for gods sake!! Nothing gets me going as much as stat chat...

Yep - fair call. Problem is that there's no training ground for potential football commentators. Some of those Fox guys in Oz have thousands of TV football games behind them. Many used to call games every day on SBS straight off the satellite from European competitions from their Oz studio. Many were pretty average early on because the TV art is so different. But they improved dramatically over time because they've just called so many games, and most really do their homework. The Phoenix deserve better than having these guys roll off the plane un-researched.

League have had the same problem identifying an Australasian standard commentator from NZ - and now the experienced Andrew Voss just lifts their coverage so much. I'd have Cockerill tomorrow and bring Ifill into it when he retires as analyst and football frontman.

SKY are most likely going to dismiss comments on a forum as a valid source of feedback, but complaints made straight to them are logged and passed on to the relevant people... if there are enough coming through, then people higher up the food chain begin asking questions...

Haha tomorrow SKY will have 5000 people ringing up to complain about Dewhurst... LOL

I'd say it'd be difficult to get an aussie coming over like the warriors have with Voss. I read somewhere that Voss has beef with the powers that be over in Aust, and that if he didnt take the warriors gig he wouldn't be working for them over there either.

Someone said GGW is proven - I know he did the Honiara tournament but what else?

I like him too for the record - his enthusiasm for the game and his diligence with preparation more than anything.

And does, quite simply, a fantastic job for all the games. He does a ton more preparation for games than Dewhurst does, even for games like the U20s where there is very little information about the teams and players available, compared to the ease of finding out information about the A-League.

Whether such information and warmth would be heard with club teams is a test.

Dewhurst talks far far too much, often about things that have literally nothing to do with what's going on the screen.  I'm sure it comes from being on talkback radio where the worst thing you can have is dead air.  He just rabbits on about some such nonsense while there is a game of football going on in the back ground.  It's actually a stylistic issue - he doesn't commentate the game, he just talks about the match while it's on.  That's ignoring the inaccuracies and lack of prep which is another issue.

It's a completely different job on TV to radio - commentary should supplement the pictures and silence can sometimes be all that's required - let the pictures speak for themselves!

Fred is game but his voice is just awful for TV.  Plus how can he really provide interesting context on the Herbert Phoenix vs the Merrick Phoenix for example when he's Ricki's boss and involved with NZ teams - he's unlikely to criticise NZ players either.  He's too conflicted to be interesting.  Ngata is bland and doesn't provide any insight beyond the obvious - he's an ex-pro so you expect a few more interesting observations.  If he can't provide that then get someone who is at least a professional broadcaster to get involved.  There's a lack of personality there.

Ifill would be brilliant - he's really charismatic and looks at home in front of the mike or camera.  I'm sure he has a media career waiting for him if he wants it.

I hated Dewhurst since the first Phoenix game against Melbourne.  There was a fever game game against the Melbourne fans before the game and he got invited to play.  It was a real jumpers for goalposts game, against some decent lads who were scorchingly hungover, and he spent the whole game shooting from everywhere - basically smashing the ball 15 yards wide, and making some poor lad run 80 meters to fetch it.  He really took the game way too seriously in what turned out to be something like a 12-7 win to us.

To make matters worse, after the game against Melbourne where we came back from 2-0 down with 10 mins to go (in front of 15,000 people) I see him in the pub.  The place is buzzing due to the attendance, the atmosphere and the come back, and he is miserable as anything, going on about how poor we played in the first half, etc.  I remember thinking that if he gets that little enjoyment out of a game like that, he is in completely the wrong job.

What more needs to be said after reading that. Sums him up to a T.

I played and can add to this, we were pretty much all decent, senior footballers.  The oppo were, to be charitable, not flash.  Dewhurst played it like it was a cup final.  Then left straight away without having a beer.  I think he knicked a pair of shorts from me too - although that could have been Greenie.

As someone else pointed out, with his radio background he probably isn't used to letting the pictures do the talking. But yes it is very annoying.

The odd fatuous comment aside I don't have an issue with Dewhurst. He's by no means great but as far as quality football commentary goes it's Simon Hill, Mike Cockerill, then it falls away dramatically. There are some dreadful Aussie commentators and some truly moronic and biased comments men.

Mind you, some of the English commentators we get lumped with every World Cup are awful too. Can't remember his name off hand but there is one who habitually ruins the drama of any game he calls with his excruciatingly chirpy prattle. It's like listening to George Formby commentate, minus the ukelele. Even the revered Martin Tyler I find really tedious. He's seen a million games of football and none will ever excite him again.

Have always thought Mike Cockerill should be the commentator for Phoenix home games. He's a supporter of Nix participation. Guys like him have been doing TV football commentary for decades through SBS before Fox, and call a TV game in their sleep. Dewhurst's Ok on the radio but lack of research lets him down as much as anything. End result is sub standard and does nothing for the Phoenix or football here. As for de Jong. Not his fault he hasn't got the voice for it, but isn't good enough to do it. Cockerill brings his football journo skills to the table, and after about 30 mins of commentary has built in all the latest goss, potential transfers etc, because he pre interviews coaches before each game, and is generally just living and breathing A League all the time. No brainer really. Best analyst here has always been Sumner, by a mile. Others tried just talk fan club stuff, which does nothing for you are trying to work out - like last season - what's going wrong. Our guys will never have enough games to call to get better - fraustrating that it seems like they just rollup and anything's good enough.

Agree Mike's a fantastic journalist and commentator... those outside Christchurch might not realise Mike Cockerill, although Australian-born,   actually lived in NZ in his younger days and started in media as football correspondent for the Christchurch Star. He visits Christchurch sometimes and I met him at a national league game here about 15 years ago before he was recognizable from TV - he was impressed I was a regular reader of his Sydney Morning Herald reports (courtesy of the Christchurch Public Library). He only writes the occasional piece for the SMH these days and is now in charge of the Football Federation Australia website (including the A-League and club websites).
Mike also features in this new book which is an anthology of Australia's best sports writing over the years:

Actually, listening to the television commentary without the pictures shows how different it is from radio commentary - there can be moments with nothing being said, just letting the pictures explain everything

Just think NZ football deserve better, and Phoenix certainly do. Problem is the standard of sports broadcast talent on Sky outside rugby and cricket is shite, and few would get a gig at a mainstream broadcast outlet.  Sky train up emerging talent in rugby and cricket, and have some good talent coming thru in rugby - Scotty Stevenson who could easily slip into Nisbett's shoes now.  But Sky's about the bucks that rugby can bring in, that's the biz it seems, and sadly, football is not important to them.

NZF will be happy with Dewhirst and de Jong delivering their football sermons, so no heat's going to come from there. Phoenix at the bottom of last season's table are in no position to put any pressure on. But that may change soon.

Re Oz commentators - yeah there's a couple of average ones there. But one or two are being tried out/trained up to see if they'll be any good down the track. Cockerill is needed badly here. His credential's can't be questioned, as others have observed.

Hopefully the new Sky guy is into lifting the bar with football - as right now it's really amateur - and in the case of that AW's game in Dunedin, a sad case of a whole lot of people out of their depth.
