"Hecanski, hecantski, fuckoffski, goalski". Classic . "Smith, I'm not sure I've pronounced that right."

If Ian Smith can do rugby commentary then we should give Jeremy Coney a shot at calling a Nix game.

In breaking news, Sky sports have announced the signing of Marcel Marco to replaced Fred de Jong as comments man for football.

If you enjoyed Piney's commentary today, make sure you let Sky Sport know by sending them a message on their website or on twitter. The more positive feedback they get, the more likely Piney will get to keep being the main commentator.

Am waiting for Sky forkers to put a post up about the Phoenix game on their facebook page.  I don't like to comment on other sports threads.  I don't think you can post to their page unless they've posted something first?  All the fury from punters over the NRL rights debacle last year I believe.

Piney and Gorden Glenn Watson ftw!

Not having Dewy spouting shark next to him allowed FDJ to further show how terrible he is at commentary. Piney shows them both up.

Apprently all we need to do to get Piney in charge is to have the Breakers and Phoenix clash.

I just sent them a facebook message.

Don't need to criticise others in order to praise Pine's commentary, tbh.

True, but why not? We wouldn't be clamouring for Piney/GGW/Ifill/Whoever to get the gig if the incumbents weren't so poor. Ngata is okay, FDJ is bad, Dewy is horrific.

Piney gave a great account of himself and his knowledge. Called all the players by their correct names and without doing the Keith Quinn entire family history on a player, he said enough to let you know something of importance  about them. I think De Jong was struggling big time to keep up with him. And I don't  mean speed wise but knoweldge wise.

A fantastic breath of fresh air. I'd  miss him on the radio commentaries with Daniel McHardy and Mr Chote, perhaps Sky should have the three of them doing the TV and link the audio to the radio? That way everyone wins.

It was quite clear in the first half that Piney's a big Siggie fan.

That's not a bad thing, just sayin.

He definitely sounded more like a radio commentator still, constantly describing the play, talked very quickly.

But it was not mindless drivel, unlike Dewhurst and De Jong

who did the radio commentary in Piney's absence?

I liked the fact he actually talked about what was going on rather than waffling on about mindless crap not relating to the game.

Did that as soon as the game finished.  Don't expect much to come of it, but I enjoyed it while it lasted.

I'd agree with that, it's something for him to work on if he gets another go, but i'm sure it's not easy switching from one to the other.

the best English commentators let the ball and play do the talking sometimes and noted some passes/players or movement.

So much this. I cant stand commentators having a chat when the ball is in play

Jason's commentary was an example of what happens when you utilise a professional journalist with broadcasting talent in a commentary role - evidence of research, background knowledge, some genuine insight and a variety of approach within a defined style... in contrast to a former radio announcer using inane in-joking "banter", an obvious lack of detailed preparation, and a tendency to read aloud pre-match stats from a sheet and pass them off as analysis...

and considering that the better option also lives in Wellington, and thus SKY wouldn't need to pay to fly him down from Auckland for every match, it seems like an absolute no-brainer in both football and business terms...

If SKY used Piney for every Phoenix match they would produce a better product, win greater respect from the football public, and save a lot of money in production costs... game, set, match.

I think Dewhurst and de Jong do it from the Mt Wellington studios (I read that on here courtesy of Chopah I think)

who did the radio commentary in Piney's absence?

Daniel McHardy.  Thought he did a fair job too.  When at the ground I always listen to commentary on radio with earphones.  His commentary was very accurate and easy to listen to.

Daniel has become a multi sport talented commentator on radio.  Does the Wellington based rugby since Graham Moodie passed away and also has done cricket in recent years.  Was on the mike on Friday when Brendon McCullum was going ballistic with the bat against England.

Yeah McHardy is good. Radio Sport football coverage would survive without Piney. Meanwhile Sky Sports coverage would not only be bearable, it'd be quite enjoyable for a change. Even though the Jets game was quite frustrating to watch, it wasn't anywhere near as frustrating as what Dewhurst makes it. Piney is 1000x better than anyone on the Sky panel even if his Radio style shows occasionally. I need to send a message to Sky too

Fuck this stupid game
