Hey Pete.

Where did you find out about this promotion. I called the number and the answering machine mentioned "icon" sky promotions.  I tried to google it but no dice. It seems like it could be a bit dodgy to me. Any feedback on how it worked out for you?

Completely legit.

They are a marketing company employed by Sky.

I found out about them initially on these Fever forums and then more info here on the trustworthy "Geek Zone" tech forums:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=106&topicid=160441

I find "Geek Zone" very useful for all internet and technology topics.

It's NZ's leading tech forum started by a very helpful guy called de Freitas.

I got hold of someone at Icon at that number I posted Monday last week and the Sky technician came and installed it on Wednesday.

All up and running - I paid $39 to the technician on installation.

What's the chances that SKY loses its A-League rights to Lightbox sports?. Just asking as I heard they (Lightbox) will be purchasing the V8 Supercar licence which SKY pay next to nothing for like the A-League TV rights.

Pretty slim given that Lightbox don't have their own on-site production team.

Producing the Nix coverage is a big reason why Sky have FFA/Fox over a barrel.

It's also the reason Sky have NZ Rugby, Cricket and all the minor sports screwed...as they are the production company. For anyone to take those rights they would need a new production company, or their own one.

Why couldn't they ask fox to come over and do the production over here. Surely it wouldn't be too much harder for them than going to Perth? Then Fox can keep the footage for aus and they can sell all of the a league as a package to tvnz / sommet / coliseum / whoever.

they'd have to commit funds to that and hope:

a) all those parties would actually be interested in the rights

b) that they'd pay at least $300k more than what it would cost them to bring all the gear over etc.

risky.

Doubt it's worth it for them to film and broadcast 13 games a year, would be a fairly inefficient use of what I assume is expensive tech.

To do a full broadcast, you literally have to ship at least two container loads of equipment over. So either you do that before and after every game (expensive), or leave the gear here and have it do nothing at all for 2 weeks between games.

Hardly worth it for 13 games a year.

So what do they do with Perth then? Don't think they film anything else there? Or is it because it's cheaper to rail it than ship?

Genuinely interested btw. Not trying to say you're both wrong.

There will be AFL and other sports to film in Perth that Fox will have that they wouldn't have/want in NZ

I'm positive things will go wrong.

I'm sure some of SKY's production crews are contractors aren't they? What's stopping someone else paying them to do it?

Fuck this stupid game

Piss off your biggest (only) client so someone else can pay you the same rate to film 13 Phoenix games. Bold strategy.

That is one reason why the FFA should consider an Auckland side. It'd make the rights here worth so much more, and something like what you suggest may become a bit more viable because it will nearly double the number of games here. The more viable the alternative becomes, the more sky will have to pay to stop the alternative from happening.

But couldn't one of lightbox sports partners aka TVNZ produce the Wellington games? That would have to seem like a realistic option wouldn't it?.

Could be an interesting arrangement. Film the Wellington games for us, we'll give you a live game a week, X of which will be Phoenix games, plus all Phoenix games delayed.

It'd also get games on FTA, which the FFA seem to favour because of exposure, ratings etc.

I imagine it'd still require a certain level of investment though. A second NZ side would probably be needed to make it viable.

Yeah true Tegal, However the game has to be worth at the moment more then the $200,000 Sky is paying for it.

the true worth is 200-300k plus whatever it would cost for fox sports to film Wellington games. It is so low because every other A league game is basically worthless (which the FFA somehow seem to think is the Phoenix fault), and sky has leverage when it comes to broadcasting nix games.

Way I see it is there are two ways to change that:

a) make the rest of the league more attractive to New Zealanders somehow (kiwis not counting as foreigners perhaps as one example?)

b) make the possibility of someone other than sky filming games in NZ more viable. Perhaps by increasing economies of scale by adding a second NZ and doubling the number of games in NZ.

Or maybe investing in the necessary equipment, facilities and staff, but that would cost money.

Does the licence expire at the same time as the broadcast deal with sky expires? Maybe part of the negotiation with NZF is to put some $ toward such equipment to help the FFA set up a situation where someone other than sky can broadcast games? It would explain why sky don't seem to be a part of that negotiation (as someone mentioned as being odd in another thread).  Or am I just dreaming?

just dreaming of a scenario where either sky pay more for the rights or someone else does so that the nix become more sustainable and get a 10+ year licence.

Don't really see what is particularly wrong with that. But should have known you'd make some boring comment.

The word around the office is that we are in negotiations for the rights, and that no advertising has been done yet.

I also understand there are no other players it's just a negotiation on what the rights are worth.

So lightbox has shutdown lightbox sports and colliseum is back doing it's own thing. It just picked up fresh investment from the US.

Checking the SKY Website is this the Phoenix Game?

SKY Sport 2 7:20-9:35

There is no hint on the site for showing the A-League a week before the start of the season.

SKY is beyond me, even if they buy the rights, they seem zero committed. I guess the new deal will haunt at us with bad metrics.
