Some people just have Sky Sports one.

Only people who still have Sky UHF just get Sport 1. The UHF Sky is being closed down this year so all users will have to be on Digital (has already be shut off in some areas).

Sky had a few options:
There was the Highlights channel (poor picture but better than delay.
They also have 4 new sports channels that are currently being tested for coverage of the Winter Olympics (Sport 4 - 7, will be channels 131 - 134). These new channels are currently on the satellite but are not on any Sky set top box until Sky send out the signal the the box (which could have been done last night)

I was damn annoyed that the coverage ended up being delayed, but what were sky to do?

they had no idea exactly how long the cricket was going to go for - originally it was only going to run 5 minutes over time, until it unbelievably ended up a tie.

with live open tennis, and ODI cricket, already in full swing on the other channels, they simply had no choice.

considering they had to make a decision on the fly, with a constantly changing situation, I think they made the "best" decision.

This.

You weren't even home til it started..

Clarke's point is the winner.

If we were in extra time in the footy and they cut over to the cricket then you'd have a point.

They can't help it if the cricket runs over time.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

it cut into footy time during normal cricket time (not just overtime)

I wouldve been happier if Sky had put a notice on the screen saying coverage was delayed, maybe they did and my screen setting didn't shoow it? Anyhow now Im sad and confused.

the cricket didn't cut in to the nix just becuase of the extra time, it was already 10 minutes in when the last ball of the 20 overs was bowled. The problem was that they scheduled a 3 1/2 hour game of cricket in a 3 hour slot.

If Auckland won it, they hosted the final...

it was annoying, but i dont think we missed too much.

I think at some point in the past (a previous Phoenix match im sure) they have switched the game temporarily to SS3 while whatever was on SS1 finished, even with a note along the bottom of the screen. I was kind of expecting the same thing this time, but it didn't happen.

What really ruined it for me was Lawrie McKinna on twitter talking about the match and score... while we were still watching the cricket.

Was a great cricket match though, i would have been gutted if they just cut it at 8.

Sky did (mostly) the right thing. They have an obligation to show both, and they did. And I think those watching the cricket would have been even more pissed off than we if they got their coverage cut out after spending the previous few hours watching the match. So we had to wait an extra forty minutes, the only ones who suffered were the impatient, and those of us who spoiled it for themselves by following the match via other means (in my case by Twitter updates... and in Addicks's case by reading my emotional responses to my phone going off )

I'd also imagine that Sky was contractually bound by NZ Cricket to show the match in full.

Frankly, Sky could have cut the end of game cricket highlights and the credits. That was bloody useless. Credits I can sorta understand but too bloody bad. Showing the match highlights, even if it was only two minutes, was ridiculous. Cut the cricket as soon as your job is done then move onto the real sport.

Ah well, could have been worse. Could have stopped broadcasting the cricket to show a made-for-TV movie

This. The worst thing about it was they offered no explanation of what was going on, that I saw or heard anyway.

And Smithy, why does your signature now contain a photo of Bluemagic and Happyted?

whilst it was annoying about the delay, they had to give the cricket first option, it would have played out the same if the situation was reversed......ie cricket coverage was played after the football. i'd have preferred if they'd put it on another sky channel sky sport 3 or somink but at the end of the night it was only delayed by 30 minutes or so.

40 minutes to bowl 2 overs

The most ridiculous thing about the cricket - Auckland need 8 off the last delivery to win it. Otago bowler and captain then go off into a big, deep, involved discussion about possibly changing the field...muppets.

Just don't bowl a no-ball (or a wide) and you win. Easy.

As stated, it was the lack of information that was the bad thing...a message on the screen explaining it might have helped matters? As it was, we all just had to sit in the pub hoping that it would actually come on when the cricket was finished!

And just when I thought things couldn't get worse...I was watching the Murray v Nadal Australian Open match and Sky cut to an ad break at literally the exact moment when Nadal retired early!! The commentator was halfway through saying "And...{Nadal has retired}" and we get an ad for Bunnings Warehouse or some sh*t!

I also agree on the replays during games from Fox Sports. It has been worse in the last 2 games for some reason. The ball is actually in play and they are replaying shots that were not even good and we don't see what's going on for about 20 seconds!

He asked a question you muppet, so obviously not.  I don't believe your profile which says you're 32.

For the record I was very pissed off.  Not so much because the cricket went over, but because it took them 30minutes to bowl two overs.

Much worse, though, was in the game they were showing replays at the most ridiculous times.  You could hear the crowds 'oohs' and 'aahs' while we saw a replay of Ifill blazing it 8m over the bar.  Was ridiculous, I've never seen them do it that badly.

couldn't agree more, the f*&kin replays were doing my head in. Time and time again! missed so many attacking build ups why they showed pointless replays.

The delay of the game worked in well for me as i had training and was running late to get to the pub.  The thing that p**sed me off was the fact that at half time in the football, they played about the same amount of ads they normally do, including some twat reviewing the game for the half time team talks.  Whats that about?  At least with the replays or delays of the EPL they go straight into the 2nd half.  Could of caught up time at least.

They couldve put it on another channel (ive seen them do it before),i pay to watch the nix live, not delayed by half an hour because they cant be bothered doing this.

Failing that,a message scrolling at the bottom of the screen apologising and telling us itll be on delayed at 830 wouldve been nice and comforting.

Allegedly

Whilst ideally they should have displayed a message to viewers, in reality Sky had no way of knowing EXACTLY when the cricket would finish - this could have been allayed with a message along the lines of "Phoenix vs Victory will be shown immediately upon the conclusion of the cricket".

However, by simply checking the program info button on the remote, you could see exactly what was happening - they had clearly programmed the football to start upon the conclusion of the cricket, with the start time changing every few minutes in line with the cricket dragging on.

Anyone saying it should have been played on SS3 during break in ODI is missing the point completely.

Saying it is because "they cant be bothered" is rather lame.

Especially when you realise that they would have then had to delay or cut some of the ODI, which isn't smart because I bet you it rates higher than the Nix.

The obvious solution is to scrap absolutely every form of T20 cricket on the planet.

And not just because Canterbury are ratsh*t at it.

Start the game on time on their pointless "Sky Sport Highlights" channel, and put banners up ever couple of minutes on Sky Sport 1.

I wonder what Sky would have done if it had been Rugby and not Football that was scheduled to start after the cricket game.  I bet they would have made some switching round.

Their lack of communication was terrible and hopefully they will do better next time.  it's not that hard to put a banner up, they do it for cricket rain delays all the time.
