Why? Better pedigree than van Dijk and Berisha, and they've been both top scorers in the A-league. Certainly better pedigree than Greenacre, the man he's basically replacing.

Both van Dijk and Berisha were alot younger when they came to the A-League. Greenacre has hardly had a good strike rate.

Dont expect this guy will be any better than George.

Pretty harsh. While van Dijk and Berisha were younger when they came here (26) neither had as good a career in Europe - pretty much the reason why they came here so early. This guy is 30 - same age as Ifill when he came here, and more experience at playing at higher levels in Europe. Hardly an old player.
Do you think that George was better for the Phoenix than Greenacre? Huysegems has clearly had a better career than Greenacre up to this point, so if you've admitted that much, then I can't see how you can reasonably think he won't be any better than George, unless you're trolling. Which you are, but I guess I just needed to respond in this case.

I love it that his old club Lierse has the same colours as the Phoenix.

Check out these two bad boys from their website...

Just guess work at the moment. Lets see how this turns out. Nobody on here has seen him play so all comments are crap.

yeah I would always have smith and muscat as the base of the midfield. Then the arrangement of the 4 in front of them can change if needed

This.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

 Very happy with this signing.

Saw him play a couple of years back and looked solid.  I'd have him down as the dark horse for A League player of the year.  He's also used to playing in the stripey which is good.  If he could score a real goal like the vid from Fifa 10/11/12 he'd go down as a club legend.

The game against Sydney sure has some good attacking play penciled in, wish I was back in NZ for it.

On a different note, we still need a decent RB.  There's not been a decent pro one in NZ since Darren Bazeley (Muscat sees himself as a DM before I get axed).

Not trolling at all.

Last 6 years he's played 118 games for 17 goals. Thats less than 1 goal every 6 games from a striker.

You may also find that he didnt start many of those 15 Internationals either

.Bench player as I stated.

A dog with a bone :)

Also worth noting that when he did play, he wasn't necessarily used as a striker- so that would harm the goals to game.

Comparisons to George is probably other end of the spectrum stuff to be fair.

Ivan Vicelich must have played against this guy a few times.

They were both playing in the Eredivisie between 2003 - 2008.

I wonder if Herbert and Ivan discussed this during the WC qualifiers.

Just what I like to hear:

"I'm a striker who likes to press, pacy and will score goals"

Greenacre & Berisha were the strikers who pressed the most but Berisha had the goals as well  - if Stein can do that then we are in the Money!

I hate it when people compare goals to game ratio without taking into account all factors. The guy himself admitted he doesn't always play as an outright striker, let alone all his games coming on as a sub.

That was a nice interview with Piney. Let's hope Stein's family settles in well here and he does score enough to be back in the Belgian selectors thoughts!

Weaknesses- Smith and Muscat won't be able to get forward as much from playing in a defensive midfield position and they were both goal scorers last year.

Leo is unproven at right back, and we have NO other real option there. Is Smith able to play right back? Even that isn't a good idea. Excited about our attacking options, but we are weaker in defense.

Hope Stein can rip it up. He seems to be a good player. Seems ironic- we finally got a tall striker after years of launching wasted balls into the box and Ricki says we are going to look to play along the deck...!

Sorry to disappoint, but my dad's family in the Netherlands are AZ Alkmaar supporters - one of Huysegems' previous clubs - and my cousin John says though he was a useful player back then, he's now considered a spent force due to many injury problems. He says he used to rely on his pace a lot (used to be quick for a tall man) but barely scores now due to being slowed by injuries. He was sent out on loan to Roda JC in the Eredivisie in 2010-2011 but it wasn't a success and he only started two games and appeared as a sub in eleven. He then re-signed for the club he started with, Lierse, last season on a performance contract but after missing the first half of the season due to transfer regulations, didn't impress enough for Lierse to want to renew his contract.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
So, there are reasons he's prepared to accept the big drop in pay to play in the A-League. I question why the Phoenix would sign a "striker" (he's actually more of a wide player these days) who's not scored more than a couple of goals a season for the last seven years - and even if Ricki wants him to play out wide as a winger or more centrally just to hold the ball up, he's had no success in those roles for his European clubs for some years...
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Dom Post headline about Huysegems "Boosting Phoenix Firepower" a bit misleading:
From August 2007 on: 11 goals scored
Season 2008-9 on: three goals scored.
Reliable Dutch source for his career stats (better than Wiki):
http://www.vi.nl.kpnis.nl/Spelers/Speler/SteinHuysegems.htm
327 career appearances            68 goals       =             one goal every 4.8 games

Comment from a Roda JC supporter on a fans' forum 2010:
"Hmm..  I don't really rate his shooting abilities that good, most of his shots are/were way off and most of the goals he has scored in the past were purely because of that good bit of power in them.

Personally, I think he's a pretty poor winger and I don't really understand why he was loaned by Roda. Only played 1 game up till now too, if I am correct. He's no real addition to the squad."

So. Just like Ifill was a spent force when he came here.

Plus spent force in Europe (or not good enough at high level in Europe) does not mean spent force or not good enough for the A-league.

Geez, some people you just can't please.

Well, you can see how many people here are actually scared when something goes right for a change.

Exactly. Some of the A-League defenders he'll be going up against wouldn't get near the level this guy's played (even recently). Unfortunately a couple of those defenders play for us but hey...

Nobody knows how this will work out, but on paper at least this probably is our biggest ever signing. He certainly has a better pedigree than Ifill, Greenacre, Rigters, Mehmet even the likes of Van Dijk and Berisha when they first came to the A-League. So considering the kind of signing we could have made I think we should be optimistic that there's at least a chance this will go well.

And picking random quotes from a fan forum to make a point is Dom Post depth of poor reportage. Someone, somewhere probably even criticized Durante on here once. Christ, imagine if some Dutch fan was quoting Zinidane in order to make a point about the Phoenix!

Spoke to a Nix staffer today and by all accounts he's a top bloke, so ticks the no c**ts requirement as well.

I disagree on the midfield. Didn't Smith score his goals from the same midfield position, next to Lia?

As for Muscat I think he will only be more prolific, exploding through the centre of the park. I actually think the smith-muscat midfield combo will be one of the most positive features of next season. Smith Sanchez and muscat may be the best midfield we have ever had. Time will tell all and the new season is just around the corner.

"Yellow Fever are fantastic – I have to say that"

If smith and muscat play central just hope they have a good understanding on who covers as one goes forward

He seems good enough for A-League. Give him time. The forward mix is OK and can be one of the best under a good conditioning regime and under Ricki's playing concept, there are more attacking options available.

I really like the signing, not just because he has a pedigree not seen at the NIX previously, but more so because i think this will lead to us playing a far more attactive style of football this year.

I can see us playing three up top with him and Ifil having the freedom to roam which i can see teams getting done with, previously they (other teams) just had to watch Ifil so he could be marked out of the game for larger periods. Hard to do if they have to start watching out for this guy as well.
