What I want to know is what other options they considered. Did they think about 'Biscuit', for instance, or did they just go for the first thing someone blurted out?

Nickname selection is an important part of assimilating a new signing into the squad and I think that the fans deserve to know how the Nix went about it. Was there a clear and transparent selction process or was it just the same old "nicknames for the boys"?

I think he was probalbly right to have a little trepidation about the signing.

The guy clearly a class player with a bit about him, but he has a lot of injuries of late which we should be concerned about and look to mange to ensure we get the most out of him. Last thing we would want to happen is another Pantellis scenario.

If by Jan he's still fit, playing and scoring goals and he say's hit shit he's an idiot. Until then its only one good game. And one good game does not make a player.... he could still turn out to be our Francis Jeffers of Arsenal (was class at Everton - absolute shit at the arse...hmmm ironic)

You forgot to mention how crap Jeffers was at the Planes...

The Pantellis debacle was the result of a lack of due diligence. Apparently his knees are absolutely shredded, and had the nix actually done a medical first there's no chance he would have been signed. As a result I'm pretty sure they would have done slightly more homework on Stein.

People keep forgetting what a train wreck the recruiting that off season was, in the midst of all the Terry drama. We were signing anyone who was desperate enough to have another shot at a professional career and who no-one else wanted to go anywhere near, that's how we ended up with Pantelis, Downey, Tsattalios, etc.

Yeah I understand that in hindsight. We really took a punt on almost everyone we signed, and if anything we were lucky that a couple of the signings which could have been 50-50 came good (such as Sanchez and Smith, who clearly weren't in great demand elsewhere). Nevertheless, the Pantelis signing seems like the most reckless punt by a long shot. I'm just grateful that it's very unlikely to happen again.

You keep making this same point but why did we give them 2 year deals?  If we, and they, were that desperate (i.e. no one else would touch them) it makes no sense.  Also, plenty of other clubs have had financial problems and rumours about players pay, Central Coast especially.  Almost every club has lived on a knife edge to a certain extent - I just don't see any evidence that it has ever hindered our or their ability to sign players.  Has someone at the club actually told you this is the case, or are you just assuming that's why we signed these guys??

Going on wikipedia only it seems like part of his recent lack of activity hasn't been about injuries, he missed 5 months because of a registration error, plus he had a loan terminated.  So no need to assume he's got injury problems - he's clearly good enough for our level - I think this can definitely work.

Potential that they could have seen the state we were in and tried to cash in by 'requiring two year deals', knowing if it fell through they would receive money some how. If that's not the case, then you raise a good point.

What do you base that on James Dean?

From the missed chances he had in the 1st game I would disagree and would back that up with his low conversion rate from thoughout his career. He has some talent but as a striker if you you cant finish you sit on the bench or move on which is what he's done previously.

My thoughts would be, with Ifill to slot back into the starting lineup when he's fit Stein will be the one to make way for him.

If not who do you think will be droped for Ifill?

A dog with a bone :)

so this, Sten and Ifill/brockie with lead the line with Ifill/Brockie on the wing - Totori will be used as an impact player.

Queenslander 3x a year.

Cant remember Stein missing any sitters, just sent a few headers wide which is obviously not his strongest feature. Although he tested Necevski early on with a header on tarfget.

That volley he hit crashing into a player seemed to show he has natural shooting instincts

Clearly someones not going to be happy until they achieve 100% of shots on target and 100% of on target shots go in. From saturdays Game we had 10 shots on target, 7, were either goals (2) or forced saves from the keeper (5) to me those seem like some good stats and speak volumes for a strike force that included Stein. The fact that you use his low conversion rate from throughout his carrer to measure him NOW makes you sound like a Victory supporter using there two premierships as evidence that they are CURRENTLY the best team in Melbourne

Seriously? You think our one and only 'true' striker will get dropped before Totori ?

He didn't miss any clear cut chances-  he could've done better with a few, but it was his first game so I'll cut him some slack.

I don't know why some of them were given two-year deals, it certainly wasn't a smart thing to do. But the situation at the club at the time was decidedly grim, and everyone knew that Terry was done except the man himself who seemingly lived in denial and consequently made a whole string of irrational decisions throughout this time, and the signings may fall into that category. Or, as BigTobz said, maybe the players insisted on longer term contracts since they were being signed for all that much. A very credible source told me that one of those players was signed because he was willing to go unpaid for the first three months of his contract. Maybe Terry in his delusion thought he could survive until the following season and try to keep his costs down for that year by signing them to two year deals.
That off-season was very specific for the club and the signings were the result of those specific circumstances. While the situation at the club was far from ideal financially in other seasons, it was never that desperate as in that infamous off-season.
