Somewhat surprised to see someone thinking he shouldn't be re-signed. He is excellent at holding the ball up, good passing, makes intelligent runs, a fairly good finisher, has excellent body position and physical presence, presses well defensively, and probably most importantly he is experienced, confident and offers great leadership. Against that he is a touch slow and favours his left foot heavily. He isn't useless in the air, he is quite good at defensive headers and flicks-ons, its only attacking crosses he struggles with. I think he is a very good a-league player and the only possible reason you wouldn't want to re-sign him is if he is asking for too much money. He is likely to get offers from other a-league teams at least, so fingers crossed we can keep him.

He also works hard and gets involved while other strikers around the league just tend to wait for their opportunities and be poachers rather than creators.

I've been most impressed with how deep he's been dropping into our own half to get the ball and kick off the counter attacks. He's often covered for Hernandez's lack of defensive runs in this way.

Stein didn't do much to lift the team last year or at the start of this year. His run of missing goals was just as bad as Brockie's. The criticism of his performance was fair. Brockie was a golden boot contender last year, for those with short memories.

However he has turned it around really well, looks like a handy number ten/striker, seems to collaborate better with Boyd and has re-found his confidence and instinct for goal. He's benefited from our team lift and vice-versa.

True, I couldn't believe that a successful businessman would fall for the Bahraini equivalent of a Nigerian scam. Lack of imagination. But that was 3 years ago!!!

As you say it is in the past. :-)

Last season Brockie was top goal scorer, this season it probably will be DonkeyStein.

Still there is no reason to sign a player whose limitations are so cruelly exposed.

The only limitations clearly exposed appear to be your understanding of the game of football.

His total time at the Nix he has scored 14 goals in 42 appearances... a Goal every three games and considering the amount of appearances he made as a sub last year that is a  good return. Nine in 18 Games this year. Does he have limitations sure he does, just like every other player but to say there is no reason to sign him?

Appearances can be deceiving..

The combination of cost, age and limitations (right peg, heading ability) would be the reasons of "little faith".

Apart from the 5-0, we are a team playing attractive football, and agree the team is improved. My concern is that the nucleus is in effect the same team. To commit players such as Lia, Bertos, Stein, Iffill, to contracts past this season isnt going to improve the team.

Before it gets nasty.. deep breath

He is 32. Same age as ifill when he came. If he cant head a ball who is the bald guy who makes more clearances of opposition corners than any other player?

I sincerely hope he scores plenty more goals this season to win the golden boot.

I'm not sure I agree on anyone other than Bertos. His best days seem to be behind him.
Lia has improved immensely and has shown that if he won't start he will be a great midfield back up, Good to keep in the squad.
Stein is top equal goal scorer. He has shown he can play this style, he can drop back into AM, works hard.
Ifill while getting on would totally be worth having on reduced wages, as a local player, for 30 minute talismanic cameos off the bench. This depends on whether he wants to and whether he can recover his fitness.

I can almost hear Ernie think at the end of the season (or next season, whenever): "Brockie? Nah, I can get a better poacher / striker for less with a better attitude". You may get a decent youngish Spaniard or Brazilian who has no options in main leagues for the same money as Brockie.  Stein is not ideal, but we know what he is capable of, so we really just need to know the price tag.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

However which of our new imports would we have not signed if Stein had stayed?

Possibly depends on whether we knew he was leaving when Krishna was offered his deal, but presumably Roly.

You know we belong together...

He had the chance to stay with us - tough luck as far as I'm concerned.

Not sure our new up-tempo style (hopefully) would have been suited to him as much anyway.

And despite all that, he was still one of the most potent goal scorers in the league last season.

Pffft facts.

Brockie was contending for golden boot before last season, doesn't stop people saying he has been crap for the last TWO years.

Allegedly

It seemed to be the consensus that the only reason Brockie cleaned up in 12-13 is that the rest of the attack was as useless as a chocolate teapot. The same could be argued for Stein in 13-14. Similarly to how Richard Hadlee's skills with a cricket ball were magnified by the fact that the next best fast bowler in NZ for most of his career was the "Naenae Express" Ewen Chatfield.
