No, it's not, the goal was correctly disallowed.

Sanchez is class. Thought Lochhead was really good too. Greenie is immense but arghhh, the game was so frustrating

Seemed to get out-jumped a lot getting his head to the ball from goal kicks?

Did your seeing eye dog tell you that? If he did, get a new one because he will have you under a bus in no time!

And as for that sh*t Vargas rolling around like he had been shot in the first half. Good to see the ref told him to get up and get on with it. w**ker

This comment motivated purely by sour grapes, and possibly made elsewhere, but it would be interesting to see how MV would fare if their salary cap compliance was scrutinised Kewell, Hernandez, Archie, Allsop, Solorzano...
Can't expect MV pay much for the likes of Broxham though.
Anyway, they wouldn't be the first Melbourne team to fiddle the books.

If Brown had put in one or two of his sitters, Greenys effort that hit the post leading to the Daniel non-goal had gone in or Sanchez had knocked in his easy header there might not be a need for another striker.

That's 4 chances that players in a professional football team really should have taken. Instead of crying out for a new striker (which we quite clearly aren't going to get) why don't we put more pressure on the players we actually do have to take their chances?

As frustrating as the game was, we played really well.

We were ALL OVER them like a bad suit in the first half. Siggy, Durra, Daniel and Smith OWNED the middle of the pitch. Siggy and Daniel's ball winning in particular in the first half was fantastic. Sanchez and Smith combined well and even Tim Brown was moving and distrubuting well. And Leo and Locky in particular were providing great width - width that was emphasised by Snachez and Smith spreading ther ball wide and creating space.

How we were not 3 up at half time baffles me. Yes, it would be nice if van Persie, Aguero, Rooney, Dzecko, Natali, Messi, Ronaldo or Higuain came and played for us... Yeah, right!

...but those of us who can only see our lack of finishing, wake the f*** up and smell the roses!  We are playing good football, creating lots of chances, and were even taking it to the Melbourne scum with 10 men. We were easily good enough to have won in Perth (not an easy away trip either) and against Melbourne... True, we didn't but things could be a LOT worse... it's great football we are playing, and we'll turn it on in front of goal soon too... kerep the faith.

There's a negative berk who stands up a few rows behind me in Aisle 22 who likes to bag Bertos constantly instead of supporting the team and enjoying the game.  He's a sexist, (calls anyone he doesn't think is any good a girl, as if there is something wrong with being a girl) homophobic (Abuses people he thinks are uselss by calling them homos) boring dork who comes to the game not to support the team but highlight to everyone around him how he 'shoulda been a footy star' by knocking every mistake and abusing the team when we are behind.

What a better place the ground would be if knobs like him stayed at home and we all cheered our team on and celebrated the fact that even with 10 men we still looked the most likely to score.

^ this, we all moan about not having a decent strike force, but if the players we had actually made more of the chances they create then we'd be happy. Bown needs to step up, he has fleeting moments and then goes missing for 80 minutes. Dani did well to get to the header.

Watched the game mid-way through the Australian Beer Festival and with the sound turned off, so my perception of events was probably even more skewed than normal. (Didn't need the sound on to be able to see the words "Judas, Judas" being mouthed though).

First half I thought we had plenty of chances, and even looked dominant. Victory didn't seem to be getting much change out of challenges and we looked to be hungrier throughout. But you just knew Thompson was going to get a chance like that at some point and make us pay. I swear he does the same thing to us every season.

In regards the incident where Greenacre hit the post and Daniel put it in illegallly, were there grounds for a penalty for Greenie being taken out? If so, that'd probably just cancel out Thompson's dodgy offside call. Regardless of how good or bad individual performances might have been, I liked the fact we still gave them a game being 2-0 down and down to 10 men. Right until the end I genuinely thought we had another goal in us.

The way things are going, I'm prepared for a season without the dizzying heights of the past couple of years. It appears we won't be getting any new signings so I wish the best from the squad we have. The strength of character of the players seems good and they do appear to be working for each other. Current form suggests we won't be crushing opponents by several goals, but if we can catch a break with injuries and they can stop playing poker with the refs and getting cards dealt out all the time, I reckon we'll trouble plenty of teams home and away (except Brisbane - they're class).

It's not that I don't wish we were top of the league but, given the pre-season ownership shambles and the current diffficulty in assembling a team with 22 fully functional legs, I'm unusually accepting and realistic about the way things are. That being the case, bring on the next game!

Ultimately the winner tonight, and the one that inebriates the loss, was Holgate Temptress Chocolate Porter. Unfortunately, in a cruel twist of irony, it's brewed in Melbourne. Damn them.

Actually, it's brewed in my local pub, The Holgate Brewhouse, in the little town of Woodend, about 70 clicks out of Melbourne...not that that's important right now...

Well said again.  But then I am not a fan of booing at all.  Or chanting "Judas" for that case.  It smells of bad-sportsmanship or bullying to me.  I never thought to complain about that until Sunday though.  I took my girlfriend to the game and she was horrified by it, and by how "mean-spirited and small-minded" the Fever fans were (her words).  I think I am going to have a difficult job trying to convince her to attend another game.

A few observations:

-          SigmUnd was stupid to do what he did. It was no way certain Thompson would score, and now hes suspended.

-          The ref was, well, not very good. MV got away with murder, particularly against Greenacre. The Victory did so much pushing and jostling before the ball arrived it was ridiculous.

-          The linesmen were atrocious

-          Enjoyed the football the Phoenix played for the most part. Smith looked good, Sanchez impresses me, we just need to get it in the bloody net.

Interesting that...

"The crowd here is massive. They are so loud for their numbers and the Yellow Fever is unbelievable, but I think coming off the bench made it worse cos they had that one moment where they could boo."

One wonders if that "moment" might have stretched out a bit further and possibly provided a spark for the Phoenix had it come during that dominant first half.

I think that's why the vast majority of people outside of the FZ sit in po-faced silence most of the time.

That's a defining difference between a supporter and a fan perhaps.  A supporter only sings when we're winning and delicately eats his or her cucumber sandwiches the rest of the time.  A fan will do what it takes to spur the team on or get under the skin of the opposition.

I feel so uncomfortable sitting in the distant Siberia Aisles (like being at a funeral or other socially awkward situation), but do realise that the FZ and proximity can feel a bit "mean-spirited" to the casual punter.

Oh yes and what Feverish said as well.

I think there might be about 19 other aisles for you guys to sit in if you don't like what fever zone is about.  Yes some of it is abit over the top however these guys pay the bulk of the season tickets and turn up expecting to watch a professional team each week - much worse is said at England games!
Without these guys turning up you wouldn't have a professional team in NZ!

Usually I reside in Aisle 23, but ended up in 26 due to a few friends coming along, as you say Junior, it feels like Siberia along there and at half time beat a retreat to a less "vocally challenged area".

Not dissing those in then areas at all. Their support is just as valid and important as anyones but it is, imo, much more fun to remind the referee of his uncertain parentage and solitary sexual practices as necessary from time to time!

The Fever guys are great, and I love what they bring to the game.  And I love shouting and cheering and jumping up and down myself.  But I have never felt comfortable with booing, and I thought my girlfriend's comments were important - coming as they do from an outsider who has very little experience with football and who is unlikely to return based on yesterday's experience.

I guess I didn't have a real purpose posting her reaction and my own views.  Maybe, if I did have a purpose, it would be to say NEVER tone down the passion lads - but think a little about how outsiders might view your more negative behaviours.

Back to the actual football though, I am feeling better about the match today than I was last night.  We did play some great football, especially in the first half, and on any other day we would have put those chances away and won easily.  Looking forward to seeing that happen on Friday.

Interesting - a lot of people seem to be dissing the ref who I thought was pretty good actually (other than not booking Kewell for that shove). But would have to see the reply first for the kind of stuff you've mentioned.

Agree on the linos, the one on the far side who glagged for offside on a throw-in was just trgic.

I'm torn today. 180mins of near flawless football over the past two weeks with a few moments of carelessness in between and a lack of goals.

Not sure a striker is the cure but when you have such a dominating midfield like we currently have, the likes of which we haven't really seen at the Phoenix, it's easy to say it would benefit to have a quality finisher at the front for us. But we already have one of those (Greenacre) and he played 90mins yesterday!

These guys have been playing football all their lives and they know how to put the ball in the net. To say that we would have won with a decent striker on the pitch is false...C-Diddy2011-10-31 10:45:11

Watching the game from Wales:

Best performance I've ever seen from a kiwi pro football team, we dominated the V but our lack of a finisher lost us that game.  Ricki and new owners really need to sort that as that will be the difference between us winning and losing this year based on what I've watched thus far.

Seamonster was stupid, no need to have lunged from behind like he did

8/10 for enjoyment but we really need to finish our chances.  Sadly an ongoing problem that we've had post Judas Mk1.
