Yeah you're right about the irony.  It's reporting you'd expect to find in a tabloid.

There are no rules to say you should keep a low profile, it's a personal choice.  As Doloras said, I don't think Terry is the sort of person who would keep his head down for long anyway.

??? He went bankrupt and lost his beloved Nix as well as his property empire. What more do you think should have happened? I repeat, do you think he should have done jail time, gotten the electric chair, been made to go and flat with Clive Palmer, what?

I think he should pay his debts actually Doloras.

The money that is being used to live the high life as he seems to be doing, could go towards that.

A judge has decided that he can't pay all of his debts. That's what bankruptcy means. The alternative to bankruptcy - because people sometimes just can't pay their debts - is going back to "debtor's prison" or selling debtors into slavery.

Yes I know all that. Blah blah

The system sucks when someone can owe millions, have it wiped by the courts and carry on the way he is. He has no integrity in my book. I know you see it differently, fair enough.

This is pretty simple.  I'm sure many people - including me - feel that our Terry has plenty squirrelled away.  Secondly, his entire development business was based around using sub contractors as short term finance.  Many of whom have now gone bust through non-payment.  There still a general feeling of bad faith around this whole affair.  This type of thing confirms all of that.

Geez, when I bumped this thread I didn't expect to set this off again.

I think most people can separate Terry the businessman and Terry the Phoenix founder. I'm thankful for his input in creating the club but I know he screwed over a lot of people as well. I just wanted to say thank you for his involvement in founding the club, nothing else.

That is the Nix's birthday, I was trying to mark the anniversary of the end of the Terry era but oh well.

So: hepatitis and james dean think they know more than the legal professionals, that Terry had a huge pot of krugerrands buried in his back yard, which he is now spending across Europe on hookers 'n' blow and laughing with the sheer joy of ripping people off. Well, that's possible. Or you could just be blokes on a forum working on a basis of prejudice.

Much better than trying to pretend he hasnt screwed people completely and got away with it.Yes he got away with it, so what he may have been declared bankrupt,it dosnt seem to have slowed down his lifestyle by much.

You must be having a laugh if your trying to suggest he hasnt  put some away somewhere. As with other high profile cases in NZ,it seems to be okay to rip people off for large amounts then continue on as if nothing has happened.Shame the NZ judicial system treat  the so called benefit fraudsters with the same leniency, but that a whole other subject..

Doesn't bankruptcy usually end in a tantrum, hitting the table, and vowing to never play monopoly again?

Permalink Permalink

Yeah. Being bankrupt is pretty awful. I am reminded of the classic episode of Sledge Hammer! where Sledge opposes the death penalty: "It's far too lenient. There's a possibility of reincarnation."

The reason we invented bankruptcy was that in the old days people who owed too much were "forced to pay all their debts" by being sold into slavery or kept in prison. I think some here are a bit nostalgic for that.

I note today some guy got 12 months home detention for ripping off a large sum. Here.  I bet he too has an amount hidden somewhere. All these people whom get snapped make sure they have some sort of back-up plan.

In Terry's case, he lost not just a business empire but loads of real estate etc. Any money raised from those sales should have gone to those businesses putting in claims. personally, I would have paid the smaller businesses off first to keep them going. but that's just me.

In this latest thing, if Terry is getting paid to do these things then where is the problem? Someone else's money is paying for it? Terry doesn't have the personality to stay "hidden" for long. It not his style. I'm sure he regrets his past actions like any other successful businessman that falls over and there have been some noteable names toppled in the last two years.

The issue I have is with the Dompost almost making it a singular crusade on nailing Terry. I just wish they had supported chasing after certain other well off yet questionable businesses & businessmen. Another thing that bugged me was that any details of one's claims or debts with ACC are covered under the client privelege scenario. ACC cannot go to the press about your personal issues (Except when leaked via e-mail) yet they did just that in terry's case with the phoenix. No one got held accountable for that leak.

Terry - the Phoenix person as describe a few messages back & Terry the Businessman. that was a good analogy. I can't thank him enough for his participation in getting the Phoenix founded and running. I do have concerns about him not paying his debts in his ex business empire. bankruptcy these day appears to be the only punishment followed by public vilification....and of course Home Detention that has been given out in a few cases. If the system sucks, do something about it or at least suggest on here what you think should be done. One example I always think of is Donald Trump. Nothing - Billionaire - Nothing - Billionaire again.

Remind that to those who Terry put into that position.
Sure its great what he did for the Phoenix, but some of you are more than a bit naive if you think its all other peoples money.

Fair call, you have some inside knowledge? No one is naive enough to think he has absolutely no money at all. So what would your plan of punishment be?

naive or not, the offical assignee has allowed all the travel and expenditure - somehow I don't think he/she is going to be a novice like we all are in this area. Whilst Terry has screwed over plenty of people, he has as far as the law is concerned "paid" the price of his actions. Being made bankrupt is no small thing- although most entrepreneural types go through it at least once. Why the dom post are still stalking him is beyond me, he's no longer news, no longer the owner of a football club, not even an owner of a business. He's just a bankrupt.

Frankly, if after his time in the "import/export" business (allegedly) he didn't have plenty squirrelled away then he'd have been doing it wrong...

Surely the fact that people were on here asking about him is evidence that a section of the DomPost readership would be interested in what he is up to???

But the problem is that the journo finds out what Terry's up to and, if he thinks it's something that'll piss off his unsecured creditors, rings one up and spoils his day by telling him "Hey, guess what that guy who never paid you is up to?" It just ruins the poor bugger's day. It's cruel to Terry and it's cruel to his creditors. If the creditor had found out himself and rang up the DomPost to have a yell, that would be okay.

I really don't give a toss anymore but just for old times sake...

Yeah, he left a lot of people in the lurch but it's not like he didn't already have a pretty terrible reputation around town for years prior. The easiest way to avoid getting ripped off by Terry was to not do any work for him, which is a choice I know a lot of businesses did actually make. Either that or make sure you've got some decent security.

The weird thing is I thought all you free-market, business roundtable, John Morrison-for-Mayor types were all about taking personal responsibility. Until you lose some money. Then the cap comes out.

But the irony is, the "poor Bugger" they contacted, had been paid.
Also anyone in the building industry during the time of Terrys "empire building" knew that he was a shocker for paying his bills, most people added extra margins to their tender prices to cover the overdraft they were bound to take out when doing work for Terry. That was a VERY common occurrence. A lot of the people that are unsecured creditors had done work before for Terry & his companies, they realised it took a long time to get their money , so they added the "fuck around" factor to their next jobs. A lot of unsecured creditors had done quite nicely out of supplying products & services to Terrys companies over the years & they went back for more.
I turned down a $100k contract for Century City Apartments because the risk was too high. Don't get me wrong, I feel for the people that are owed a lot of money, but the majority of them will have taken a calculated risk, hoping for the big returns, unfortunately it didn't pay off.
Still doesn't make it right though.
