just a little frustrated that in recent phoenix games especially at the galexy over 50 % of the chanting was taken up by the old 'milo' chant. as in the clapping then yelling phoenix at the ned. now its good because it is always the loudest because everyone knows it but it just isnt really a football chant and is heard all over new Zealand in the rugby, sevens and netball.  I no that the boys in the heart of the fever zone arnt responsible for this but it just gets very repetitive when rickey Herbert's yellow army and wellington is wonderful are much better in my opinion. just wondered if anyone had any ideas on how to combat this. or if anyone had noticed or cared.

Know what you mean, I think the spreading of the usual fans around the stadium due to the different ticketing meant it was harder to get any concerted chanting.  Over in aisle 9 all we really got was the "Milo" chant.  Except for the Super 14 boofheads in front of us who chanted and cheered exactly nothing.  Morons.

It absolutely is a football chant, anyway who are we to be telling people how to or how not to support the Phoenix......

I think with a big crowd who know bugger all about football support it's alright for that to happen but I do not want to see it so prolifically and prefferably not at all at A-league games.

If it gets people singing &/or attending, is it really an issue? We all had to learn/start somewhere.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I've seen many games from England on TV where you hear that chant, it's all good, may get a bit repetitive , but would you prefer silence until you hear the 'yellow army' or 'oh wellington' chant?

Exactly, but they do have to learn the other stuff.

What got on my nerves this weekend was how almost none of the cheers were co-ordinated, just little sections of one chant while another does another.

I think its also the fact that everyone who knew some decent chants were spread out around the stadium where no one else seemed to be in the mood for chanting at all.  Grrr.

Its also a bit of a rip that you have to show your ticket to get into the zone as thats definetely the place were you learn the chants best!

AND chanting is way more effective when your standing up, the fever zone being the only place at the moment that you can actually do that

but yeah, a bigger range of chants would be better

You can easily bypass their ticket checking program if you know two people that have tickets that are already in there. Just get one person to come out with two tickets and then you both have a ticket and can get in. Because everyone's standing, no one really notices an extra person.

I did this to sit with my friends in feverzone in the second half of the Beckham game because aisle 32 was crappy. Kudos to that one other guy around thre that also stood up and started to chant 'stand up for the phoenix' when no else was though.

Aisle 31/32 was indeed crappy. Too many sit down fans.

I may or may not have been the stand up guy...

I reckon we shouldn't get charged as much, we hardly sit on the seats, There is no wear and tear on them at all.

is there any chance of some sort of chant sheet being handed out to 1st timers to the Phoenix games? It seems like there is a missed opportunity to get people into it. The people need educating. It may seem a bit naff to hand out a "song sheet" but lots of people simply can't make out the words and would probably be into it if they had the chance. You could add a fun list of do's and don'ts too - eg. no mexican waves - we're here to watch the football, etc. Info on how chants are started, general stuff like that.

It seems like there is a bit of a disconnect between the Phoenix and the supporters as I would think that a chant list is something the franchise could fund and put together with help of Yellow Fever club.

I've not been exposed to the english game so I was not familiiar with the culture but I went to the first game and immediately bought a seasons pass. Its been bloody awesome.

Meh he does have a point, even if the idea of a chant sheet is a bit naff. People simply can't make out most of the chants so that is why the old "clap clap clap Phoenix clap clap clap" is the only one that ever travels around to other sections of the crowd. Complaining that no one else is chanting "Oh Wellington is Wonderful" etc. is stupid because how are they supposed to if they don't know it?

My wife is just an avid supporter of the Nix, she has asked me to try and translate the chants for her so she can join in. We usually sit in isle 24, and I can hear the cahnts ok, she's a little deaf and struggles with the crowd. At the Galaxy game we were in isle 14 and couldn't hear a thing, which may explain why ppl in the seats further away from YF Zone can't join in. It just sounds liuke a mumble, clap clap, clap clap clap Phoenix travels miles!!!!

Once the hangers on come to enough games and the chants spread thru tyhe other members of the crowd i'm sure it will pick up!!!

They all need to come to more games, listen harder and leave their stupid clappers at home so they can actually hear what we chant.

There's usually a warm-up chant or two in the Bencher pre-match for those that fancy doing a bit of homework.  Also sure for a pint or two theres a few thirsty YF at the Bencher who'd be only too happy to share the inner working of our chants.

Nobody wrote the words down for me - I learned them all by myself I did....clever aren't I.

It does get quite annoying when it starts up for the 80th time and its only 20 imns in.They need to rip (or we do...no im not serious you idiots out there) up the seats in aisles 21-22 and replace with old school terracing....I guess those things only happen in your dreams though. England cant have it but Germany can.

Rip up the seats?  These things happen in Greece too, but a bit differently. Rip up the seats, set fire to them, throw them onto the pitch, then throw bottles, rocks, flares, anything at the firemen trying to put the fires out.

Haha I was watching the start of the AEK match last night and I was shocked at how much toilet paper covered the field. Shame I didn't atcually get to see any of the actual football before the channel shut down!

Ended up watching Seria A instead - which sounds like a better plan because I speak more Italian than Greek...but the broadcast was in Cantonese

Still on the topic of chanting it is pretty funny when a newbie trys to join in and gets it all wrong. My mate at his first game was heard chanting liar! liar! instead of "Who are ya".

the chants werent that hard to pick up on really my 6 year old son was into singing he picked up most of the songs apart from the wellington is wonderfull so if a 6 year old can pick it up any idiot can. but for those that cant pick it up how about a special thread with song lyrics for them on here. and mayb try and come up with a few more newish ones for the zone

I also have difficulties with picking up the chants - although I've always had problems with comprehending the lyrics to songs (much to my brother's ongoing amusement).

At six Phoenix games I've only ever picked up:

* Same old Aussies
* For the Phoenix, stand up
* You're so sh*t it's unbelievable
* Clappy clap Phoenix
* The referee's a...

I can't discern much else.  According to this thread it makes me less trainable than a walrus and an idiot.  But I think it just reflects the distance from the Fever Zone - usually in aisle 28.

I'm keen to hear this Wellington song that is often talked about.
