Now here is a funny point and I raised this when the All Whites played Fiji.

Why did Ricki play a career midfielder in Christie at Right Back and career defenders in Mulligan and Oughton in the midfield..........?

Who suggested Ben Sigmund? I'm pretty sure it wasn't Danny (can't be bothered going through all the pages so open to correction).

On a positive note - we weren't too bad for 46min of the first half and some of the start of the second. Pity he didnt blow the full time whistle after Smeltzy scored..

Perhaps from now on, if we score first....we really needa start playing for time!

I say tackle him in the face.

A few people suggested Sigmund. I think he's not a bad option, but he is unproved at A-League level. At this stage of the season, if we were to transfer someone out and buy in a new defender, it should be someone who is a seasoned A-League player

We could do a lot worse than Constanzo, if we could get him!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Agree. RH tactics have left me scratching my head at times this season.

This franchise will be in trouble if it doesn't take advantage of the transfer window and sign a quality leader of its Keystone Cops defence. Perth will bury this defensive unit, which is probably the worst "back 4" seen in NZ football at any similar level for decades. It's an amazing oversight by Ricky Herbert, though worryingly he told a radio station this week, that he's building for the future. (the stock NZ sports coach cliche response for medicore displays). There won't be a future Ricky if you don't employ professional defenders, as these Oz sides have forward players with speed and technique to burn, and will bury you everytime you travel to Australia. Hasn't anyone in the Phoenix brains trust told you (and they have some good brains there) that to get results in Oz, you will have to put the strongest defence in the A League together.  All this sh*te about which day to travel (day before/2 days before etc etc) is just a sideshow. Problem is the money's been spent in the wrong areas of the park. Sort it now - or it'll be all over rover. Perth will prove I'm right next up -just watch and see.

Tonight showed a lack of leadership from the experienced players out there. Who wanted to take control?
Elrich went and hid. Aloisi was having his work cut out, only Smeltz put his hand up to do the extra. The defenders... that's a misnomer...

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

i feel embarrased for elrich.the quality of football he was at to what he played with today.he didnt have the greatest game himself but surely its the 2 or 3 dead AVERAGE players in our team which bring the good players down with them?

How can you take control on the right wing? You need a centre back or centre mid to do that so maybe you could have a dig at those players instead of Elrich Oi Oi.

Three for me, and two for them.

I totally agree. Absolutely nothing has been done about our defence in the past few weeks. Ricki has been telling the fans that all is rosy and he's got away with it for four weeks in a row. I don't know how much more of this the fans can take.

As stated on Page 26

"Sigmund can't sign with the Phoenix. He's played for two sides in a calander year being July to June.

How Dean Gordon got away with it last year, I don't know."

Can people stop talking about Ben Sigmund because as much as people want it, it will never happen this year

All fair enough but what could be done with our defence in the last few weeks. We've only got so many defenders in the squad. Dodd was suspended today and Cleberson was injured. Only so many options open to us. Unfortunately.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Think on the positive side it can not get any worst than the last two weeks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! surely  !!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Also the league is so tight Nix still only two wins from top four, so all is not lost yet.

But agree need some work in defence, Went to watch Sydney FC V Mariners. Bridges with Middbly back make Sydney a  potent force in attack they torn us to shreds in the first half hour.

Christie was terrible, should definately not be a starter next week, Aloisi wasn't much better ... Smeltz was great last night, worked hard throughout, some of the guys I don't see any passion from, it's like their mindset is a national league or even federation league mindset, although I sense that from only a few ... i'd like to see Ferrante and Brown back in for sure

I think people had unrealistic expectations for where this season was gonna go. Teams that have been together for 1-2 seasons will always be more cohesive than one that hasn't even had one season.

I am a wee bit grumpy

A couple of reminders ...

Everyone has right to opinion on the forum. Great. That's what this is all about.

But, let's make the effort to do the following:

1.) if we are going to bag or trash a player or performance try and explain why (most are pretty good at that)
2.) if somebody else makes a suggestion or comment you dont agree with or think is daft, respond by telling them why you disagree from a footballing perspective - do not just called them an idiot. That is rubbish (and there has been too much of that).

in short, play the ball, not the player

mods will keep a more vigilant eye out for this stuff

That's strange, because according to what I've read here in the last fortnight about 2 of our players are good enough.

We have the players, We have the spirit ( at times ), but composure and mentality lacking...

Also a sense of flow and positioning should come into it next year and help us gel, if our core stays the same.

I don't follow a fekin franchise i follow a football team or at least a group of players thats trying to be one!!
Well im not entirely sure if money is a problem but dare i say it should we be spending money on mid-season carnival games featuring English show pony's at the end of their careers or should  wee Tez be using the biscuit tin money on a big ugly hard bastard at the back who has the pace, muscle and attitude as well as the communicative skills to sort out a defence thats holier  than the pope and more charitable than Bob Geldof  ??
I know im probably in a minority of one on this but surely needs must and all that jazz!

I think we need defenders who can defend at the moment, never mind creating chances.

lia has done fullback dutuies in his career i think. and a good fullback can do both look at lockhead. the phoenix should not crawl into their shells
