Elleray was out here last year. I went to his course and got a hellish insight to what he went through. Couldn't referee at Old Trafford for 12 months, house wired on a buzzer to the cop shop, guarded by the home office on 24 hour surveillance, death threats constant, having his mail at school screened for Anthrax or bombs, going to an FA cup final with false beard and wig to watch it, turned down the going to the 98 World Cup because he was in the running for headmaster at Harrow (which he missed out on) Just mind blowing. He did say that after it all, him and Roy Keane were good mates.

and there not fulltime ref's either most epl refs have a day job too don't they ??

Elleray was the last 'non fulltime' referee on the EPL and through out his career, was always at school for the next day. They are now all fulltime.

The ref kepted the Phoenix in the match, never played any advantaged, mainly in the 1st half when we were playing poorly. Stopping the game at every chance, slowing it down so he help us, as Adelaide would have had many more great chances if advantaged had been played. Mark Shields is the the ref we want ever week please.

Well said DrQuack, the problem is that a good game by a ref is always ignored.

For instance Mark Shield's refereeing between us and CCM last week was absolutely spot on for every call, yet no-one says a word.  It's ironic how the best refereeing performances are the ones where you don't notice them.

I don't agree with your first sentence, When we lost 1-0, I thought that Ref had a brilliant game, letting it flow as much as he could. Ok, we lost to a dodgy free kick with a wicked deflection, but overall, he was very good.

Yes, we know refree's are human to.  They should also be professional and able to keep up with the game like the players have to.  If a player isn't in form, they don't play, nor should a referee ref.

How to pay for it, well, it dosn't seem a problem paying high amounts for players to the point now it has to be capped and then paying for accommodation and bits and pieces.  I think a little balance has to be bought to the game.  You want the best players pay for them and I think it could work that way higher up the food chain depending what level the Federations wants the officaials to be at.  Even at grass root levels you can't tell me there isn't money udner the table passed in one fashion or another for the "right" player.  The referee's need to step up there is plenty for all.

Yeah the poor ole refree, it's a hard job, a thankless job, but there has to be pay off or your wouldn't be a referee.  Why to players play... so should a referee ref, for the love of the game.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Jesus my head almost fell laughing at that one.

We should be professional? Come spend a week with me during NZFC season and then tell me afterwards if I'm not professional and when I show you what I get paid for MY effort, you tell me if you would do the same. PM me, I'll gladly give you all of my details and would wholeheartedly encourage you to come along and be involved with everything I do over the course of the week. OH Oh and then, when I barter myself out to the highest bidder, I don't want to see you ever accuse me of being a cheat and selling out to the team that pays me the most money.

And what do I get out of it??? The joy of being involved in a good football game you twat!!!!

Couldn't agree more Dr Q, spot on.
"There has to be a pay-off or you wouldn't be a referee"!! Oh hell yes,  the match fees more than cover the time, effort and expense of  travelling to training sessions and games, buying gear etc. I've been a referee for 10 years and do it solely because I enjoy being involved in football. I don't do it for the money and I certainly don't do it because of all the thanks I get from players and supporters. There's always a huge queue of people who are ready to jump all over referees and who are full of bright ideas about what needs to be done. Only problem is that very few of these people ever actually produce any sensible ideas about how to go about it. As was also said earlier, funny it seems that the people who do the most shouting about crap refereeing standards are the same folk who wouldn't ever consider becoming a ref because "I couldn't handle the abuse".

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I second that Lonegunmen, the ref was good at the Jets game,i think next time ref has a good game we'll make a forum for it, to please all the refs out there!!

I don't think we were really getting at that having a separate post or forum Well Ard.

If you were to ratio the amount of negative comments against positive comments regarding referee performances then it would be almost 90-1 and I'll admit to adding to that 90 as well but I can make mine a bit more constructive than 'the referee was shyte' or 'same old aussies, always cheating'

It would be just nice to hear, 'well he made a mistake but in the context of it all, it wasn't major.' Delusions I know but people are always so quick to put the boot in rather than praise.

Best comments of the day game from the bloke in front of us! Out of the blue, at the most opportune quiet moment, came:-

"No wonder your wife f%^$ed off ref!!"

And a bit later on the ref was reminded that his boyfriend was waiting outside!! Not quite sure what his young daughter thought of his outbursts.... As for us, we were pissing ourselves for ages!!

Legend.

Wot about the back pass that wasnt even mentioned? That should have been a free kick in the box.

That wasn't an intended back pass, it was simply a defensive clearance that went to the keeper.

The ref needs some glasses or a half decent optomitrist because the way they're reffing is absolute bollocks.
