Jason Hoffman has played 100 games in the A-League. Lia is better than him.

Kemp had one good season for Melbourne (might've been 2010? Can't remember) ; the rest, he was absolutely useless.

Hutchinson probably another; I've never seen him do anything except whinge, moan and make poor tackles. Has been a mainstay at CCM for 200 (!!) games.

I defiantly think Greenacre and Paston deserve to be there. Mckain was great for us too

Lia wouldn't be in my top 30.

Ifill clearly No. 1.

Struggling to get 10 top players to be in the top 10...

Ifill, Smeltz, Durante (the younger),  Rojas..

Permalink Permalink

Ifill

Smeltz

Durante

Muscat

Sigmund

Riera

Brown

McKain

Greenacre

Lia

For me, Reddy and Rojas weren't around long enough. I'm pretty sure by the end of this season at least two of Bonevacia, Burns, McGlinchey will have taken the place of the likes of Greenacre and Lia.

My all time "club" top ten players (quality/quantity of contribution):

Paston

Dura

Brown

Sigmund

Smeltz

Lia

McKain

Daniel

Ifill

Muscat

My all time "best" ten players (based on quality shown in a Nix shirt - however briefly):

Ifill

Smeltz

Vukovic

McKain

Durante

Fred

Bonevacia

Felipe

Reddy

Riera.

Edited for inexplicable lack of Ifill in the first list. I blame the drugs.

It wasn't in any order Oska... if it was, he'd top both!

Two standouts at the top then from 3-10 I can't put any order on them and 11 and 12 are very close.  I had trouble deciding whether to include Daniel and Greenacre.  But Daniel has given me many of my most entertaining Phoenix moments; Greenacre had that professionalism and control.  So both are included. The rest in the top 10 are there because I saw them as being a quality of player a step above the others.

And then there are the short and sweets.  A lot of good players that provided special moments, but I decided were at the Nix and performing at that level for only a short time and excluded them on that basis.

Bertos missed out, but I think we forget he had some very good years, blemished by a couple of less effective years to finish.

The Special Ones

1 Ifill

2 Smeltz

The Entertainers

Daniel

The Best of the Rest

Brown

Greenacre

McKain

Durante

Paston

Husygems

Riera

that's the ten for me and then

The Servants and Toilers

11 Sigmund -  Twice Players Player and Members Player of the Year; heart and goals

12 Bertos - Most club assists, Sony Player of the Year; a good four years out of six

13 Muscat - Players and Members Player of the Year

14 Lia

The Short and Sweets

Reddy

Vukovich

Felipe

Rojas

Kosta

Dadi

The A Teams

Lochhead/Daniel

Durante/Sigmund

Thought I'd get this tread going as we go into our 10th season and doing the #Top10ForTen food drive for the City Mission. I posted this on twitter but this is my top 10 Phoenix players. Very hard to keep the list down to 10.

Did a bit of analysis...

Selected 20 players I considered potential top 10 material, then gave them scores out of 10 for each of these categories;

- Longevity of Phoenix career

- Fan Favouritism

- X Factor

- Consistency

- Leadership

- Loyalty

- Personal Success (Johnny Warren medals, A-League Team of the Year, Phoenix annual awards, national team selection/success etc while in the Phoenix)

- Team Success (I roughly graphed the Phoenix' season finishes, and then matched the player's phoenix career span against it, to measure the relative success with them in the side - some players scored surprisingly highly here, e.g. Greenacre played for 3 seasons, and those were 3 of our 4 most successful seasons)

I then added up all the scores, and my top 10 came out like this;

1: Ifill

2: Durante

3: Sigmund

4: Muscat

5: Brown

6: Daniel

7: Greenacre

8: Bertos

9: Lochhead

10: Bonevacia

For the record, the other 10 who didn't make it were: Lia, Burns, Paston, Smeltz, Aloisi, Moss, McGlinchey, Brockie, Riera and Rojas.

Did I miss anyone significant in my 20? A colleague mentioned Felipe, who else could I have scored?

That is pretty awesome, can't see anyone else I would have had in that list. One player I have seen on a few lists on twitter is Jonathan McKain

McKain is a good one. Just scored him, he came in 18th equal on my standings.

Also scored Felipe and Huysegems, but they figured fairly low.

I was most surprised at Daniel, Greenacre and Bonevacia getting into my 10, but I had to stay faithful to my method, and didn't fluff any scores to try and manipulate final ratings

I did do some sense checks before tallying up e.g. "if that guy gets an 8 for loyalty, but he gets a 9, what is the difference?" and ended up changing some individual category scores to ensure that they were relative to each other.

That was very important in the Team Success and Career Longevity categories. Also something that changed out of that was that i had Brown with a very high X Factor, due to his penchant for a worldy, but in reality I had to reduce it - yes he showed some unexpected brilliance at times, but I can't realistically say he had nearly as much X Factor as someone like Ifill.

You guys are all wrong. Johnny Chen, Gao, Cleberson, O'Dor, Dodd, Pieman, they all did the one thing your lists didn't - they had the fans talking. OK, it wasn't nice stuff being said, but they had us breathless and talking at the same time.

Having said that.

Ifill, Daniel, Greenacre, Durante, Lia, Siggy, Paston, Smeltz, Brown, Burns, Riera. With Rojas, Kosta and Finkler with the potential of making the list.

For spectacular goals I nominate, Leo's rain sodden 40 yarder, Pieman's twist, turn and volley, Eugene's overhead kick and probably the simplest one of all -Siggys header in CHCH. Local boy comes home and scores a winner in the very last minute. The crowd had a ginormous orgasm when that went in...and rightly so.

smeltz burns felipe mckain

all missing from your list on longevity I guess, tho' smeltz was here for a while

and I had a soft spot for Dadi

Permalink Permalink

Greenacre and Bonevacia still made the list despite low longevity scores.

Burns, Smeltz, Felipe and McKain all figured fairly low on Loyalty (particularly Smeltz - he and Rojas were the only two with 0's for that).

Smeltz, Burns and Felipe were also low on Leadership.

Smeltz and Felipe also scored low for Team Success - in fact Burns ended up beating Smeltz overall simply because his only season here resulted in our equal highest regular season finish.

Greenacre might not have scored a lot of goals but he set up a lot and created a lot of space for others to get opportunities to have a go.

I scored him high for loyalty (mainly due to him staying on as asst coach, and his apparent love of the region) and team success (his 3 seasons as a player here were pretty much our most successful ones).

Also scored him well on consistency, leadership and fan favouritism.

Didn't think he'd make my 10 on the face of it, but there he is ;)

As a younger person who has only followed the club a few years, here is my top ten of the last few years that i've seen (basically 2013/14 and on). Because of this, loyalty is not a factor.

1. Nathan Burns - Sensational in his season with us, absolutely stunning with his skill. Drpped off post-Asian Cup, but gets in on half a season alone.

2. Roly Bonevacia - Good in 2014/15, but one of the few great players last season. Fantastic skill and a great long shot, but you don't need me to tell you that.

3. Albert Riera - Was commanding in the midfield for the past few seasons, would be even higher if it weren't for last seasons inconsistencies.

4. Roy Krishna - Last season, i guarantee you, he would've challenged for golden boot (although can one truly 'challenge' when Fornaroli is in the league?) last season if it weren't for the injury and the license (or is it licence?). Tricky, explosively fast, unpredictable and a decent finisher to boot.

5. Andrew Durante - As he's gotten older, he's gotten worse. Not haing a partner by your side is hard, but last season was poor for most of the defence, Dura included. In saying that, he's been solid at the back for much of the time i've seen him, and he is an excellent captain.

6. Ben Sigmund - He was a fiery, determined, strong defender. One might even say he was 'fully committed...'

7. Glen Moss - Last season, he had his moments, but what can one do when your defenders are leaking chances like no other. he's pulled out some incredible stops last season, and really stepped up when the team needed him. Really stopped some scorelines blowing out.

8. Manny Muscat - Versatile, adaptable, doesn't muck around. That's Manny. He's almost like Kevin, but he isn't a cod.

9. Michael Boxall - Was actually pretty bloody good in 2014/15. one of the unsung heroes. Good, versatile defender, towering and could go forward.

10. Stein Huysegems - Scored some good goals in 2013/14. I don't remember too much, though. His head was shiny.
