Can't be bothered reading through the whole thread, so don't know if anyone's brought this up, but one think that was noticeable last night was how horrible the first touch of some of our players is (especially thinking here of Manny and Lia, although there were others). I know the pitch wasn't supposed to be great, but it was clear that some players were able to adjust to that.

But the point is that it's virtually impossible to transition the ball through midfield if it takes your CMs 2 seconds to just get the ball under control, before they can even start thinking where the ball's supposed to go next. In that time even in the A-league they have people on their arse, and all the passing lanes are closed off. Which means that we either end up using the possession with alarming regularity and in dangerous areas (virtually all of the Roar chances in the first 20 came because of this), or we just end up going backwards and hoofing it 60m down the field straight to the opposition.

This...oh so this!
The other side of this is that on quite a few occasions Sanchez moved into space anticipating a pass. By the time the CM took two or three touches and looked up twice Sanchez had a defender on his arse and the opportunity was lost.
Noticably the Roar players didn't seem to be bothered by the pitch.
You get the feeling that as long as Lia can still tie his laces Ricki will select him.
Did I hear the commentators say that Ricki has/is about to take over from Merrick as having coached the most games in the A-League? If I remember rightly Merrick won a couple of titles.....wonder what his win loss ratio was?

Has been happening all season, you see a player get himself into a good position. Then what usually happens the guy in possesion either takes an extra touch 2/3 steps to many or under hits the pass or just plain dosnt make even a half decent attempt to complete it.Gets bloody frustrating at times, you would think most of have them had never trained or played together the number of times it happens.

Also get sick of hearing about crosses into the box, dosnt matter how many you put in if your not putting some of them away.

Most likely withboxall is tthat Ricky just doesn't want to play him out of position until he has a few games under his belt as CB. He might be fine at RB but no point trying him there until he is comfortable with the team playing his preferred position.. If he has a mare at RB his confidence would be shite for future games

Simon Hampton @simonhampton9

Add Alex Smith to the injury list for Saturday's #Phoenix match. Could see four players out, Biss and Rowe to potential replacements.
Not sure how we can sign Biss & Rowe tho. Maybe Downey will get the call ...

Goes without saying that had it not been for Paston we could have been on the end of a good thumping. For once in a long time Lochhead was OK,not good, but did not look out of is depth. I have always suspected that it is a confidence thing with him.If we had had Nichols and Broich then we would have been able to compete a lot better. As previously mentioned  our first touch is very poor and our movement one paced. Not all, but most of our boys just don't have any speed off the mark.

Manny is back to his old thuggish ways and has let his team mates and club down.

Can't say I am looking forward to seeing the game in Melbourne on Sat. but when the chips are down who knows what will happen.

Oh ok, so a CB is no good for RB, so instead we bring in a winger with zero experience in any defensive position? Strong logic. IMO a centre back should be able to play anywhere along the back line.

Well a right footed centre back would be no use at left back.
This is professional football mate, not 6th grade.

So if having a left footed player at left back isn't important why have we persisted with Lochhead there for so long?

Probably because it is quite important.
Oh shit i dunno, probably the same reason they havent been bothered looking for a right back? And for the reason i mentioned above, Ricki has a history of sticking with players we've always had instead of giving the younger guys a goe. We're only just seeing this change this season with Boyd and Fenton.

Right footed players play on the left all the time all round the world in any league you will find and have done since the dawn of time. End of.
You really are showing that you have no clue. The only place this occurs is with wingers because they have the ability to change the swing of the ball towards or away from keepers - generally referred to as mavericks.

Since Ricki is ignoring all these form players, please, tell me whom you play because as I have raised a few times, the squad gets bare once you get past position 15/16.

As Ballane, Austin and El Grap have said, I did say this last week (and got bagged for it). Too many players receive the ball with poor body position or are closed off and cannot see the next phase because they are closed off to options. Then you need the extra touch to correct yourself. Most of our players need to open their body 90 degrees when receiving and be open to so many more options but far too often, they receive facing the pass or the touchline. They then can't see the options or the defending coming up their backside to be able to move it on quickly and catch the defender out of position.

Yes.  Clearly the answer to the fact that Leo is making a very good fist of Right back is to play a wrong-footed Centre-back there.

Insightful.

Tobe fair, this isn't the receivers fault but the passers. Play the ball in front of the player and the issue is sorted

Yes I do agree that passers are equally guilty on some of them. I watched last week and don't know how often I screamed at our midfield to open their body up. You just remove a touch straight away. Admittedly, Daniel was the best at this.
I'd be intrigued how he would have gone had he been around this year. The forgotten man.

Haven't seen him post here for awhile, but he is working for Newstalk ZB now and is good for finding out team news. Yeah he had the impression that the window opened on the 1st. But even the FoxSport crew have that wrong, window doesn't open until the 14th.

Main point is we could be looking at Boyd, Smith, Muscat and Leo all missing from this game squad when we face the Victory.

If it's Downey v Rojas, I think I will cry. We might have to switch back to 4-4-2 with either Lindsay or Lia at RB.

Worst case

Paston

Boxall Sigmund Dura Lochhead

Lia Lindsay Sanchez

Fenton Brockie Stein

Bench: Downey, Totori, McMaster and someone else?

(excluded: Moss, Ifill, Pantelis, Leo, Manny, Smith, Boyd)

That would not be a pretty game to watch I think.

Wasn't the problem they couldn't make an international transfer until the international window opens?  The international window is open and they are coming from Amateur football so the A-League window probably doesn't apply.

Just a theory

Yeah, I realised that after I posted. But surely the A-League window is the only one that counts, as they are signing for an A-League club and need to be registered with their ITC.

I know that Ryan got a tweet from Tony P saying that it opens on the 14th because there was also media talk about Joel Griffiths. Surely he would be the best case because he would be an international transfer too. I would say its the 14th based on what Tony P says and when nut puncher turns up in a sky blue shirt.

Anyone else catch this?
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/more-sport/lucas-pantelis-returns-to-adelaide-united/story-e6frfglf-1226544756002
Pants has completely left us. Maybe gives us a chance to terminate his contract opening up a few options in the transfer window.

Pretty sure he went back to Adelaide to recover when he was ruled out for the season. He should be getting his wages paid by insurance, so isn't costing us and no reason for him to accept his contract being terminated.

He plays the same wide attacking role as Stein, Brockie, Fenton, Boyd, Totori, Ifill and Leo (as natural positions).

Seems the most accurate assessment, as being amateurs they have no club transfer to worry about.

Just because they are 'amateurs' does not mean that the rules don't apply.
