Success?  Can't remember that with the usual scapegoats.  We did Ok finishing fourth a few seasons ago when Reira was our key defensive midfielder and he was  very good.

Hope either they're wrong, or Rudes can get something decent out of him

Would still be the second highest rated player on the Phoenix (https://sofifa.com/team/111766), and would definitely be above average for the league, so hopefully he only looks bad because he's playing in a very high quality team and he can turn it on for us

Agreed. The FUT card comments are all from one user who seems to have a chip on his shoulder.

Nichols is a match winner if he's even close to his best. Likes to get high, knows how to score. He's also running out of options. Not an import. Well worth a punt.

The Polish guy is more of an unknown, good at passing back but not much else, according to both the Legia fans whose comments I saw. Last thing the nix need is another missing in action defensive mid.

Wallen, in his highlights vid, looks like an unobtrusive unselfish player, very good at passing. The kind of player who does a lot of work without standing out. Low quality opposition though. Wonder how he'd go against a decent team.

I wonder if Rudan will look at Singh is an inverted winger, like Oezil has most often played for Germany, to accommodate the other midfielders rumoured.

My mate met Mitch Nichols on a lads cruise in Croatia and they became mates. Mitch likes to party, as we already know. This was confirmed. A formidable sinus passage.

By the end of the cruise he was affectionately known as 'B1tch Nipples' which really stuck with me.

Anyway, I would've thought he'd be too similar positioned to Singh. But he was always one of those players I hated because he played decent every time we played him.

Would welcome him to the Wellington party scene with open arms. Good player.

Funny you say that because Rudan likes to play with two No 10s, as we saw against Miramar.

It's just as I said - there is a feeling of contempt out there among "semi-pro" footballers that the Nix are a shark club not worth doing any work for.

That's a sad indictment on the players more than the Phoenix. They have a far better shot of launching a proper football career playing in the A-League than in the Handy but there's no ambition and they're content with "coaching" for easy money. Its complacent and it hampers football in NZ.

However, it is their decision and their career, its just disappointing that some of our best domestic players have that level of disrespect for the "only" professional club in NZ.

What annoys me with all this is that there is not that much money in the kiwi game and to see average players being paid to “coach”, something which quite possibly they are absolutely terrible at, while most facilities are poor and most decent coaches can’t afford to pay for the upskilling they, the club and the greater game needs, is simply criminal.

Central/Defensive mids who are currently free agents. Difficult to speculate on obviously because of the sheer number of free agent players, not knowing how much the Nix would spend, not knowing what Rudan is looking for in his players but here are some that I found interesting

  • Guillaume Gillet - Belgian, 34. Last played with Olympiacos in the Greek league but played most of his career at Gent and Anderlecht in the Belgian League. Brief spell in Ligue 1 with Bastia
  • Dean Marney - English, 34. Notched up over 250 Championship matches and almost 100 in the Prem. Has just left Burnley after an 8 year stint
  • Mark Davies - English, 30, has just left Bolton after an 8 year stay. 120 Championship matches
  • Michael Essien - More possible than it seems, 35 now and has just left Persib Bandung in the Indonesian League. Don't know what his fitness is like now, but the man used to have a ridiculous engine in his Chelsea days and would still be a rockstar signing.
  • Karl Henry - English, 35. A real hard man, bit of a cod but a real proven veteran of the game. 127 games in the Prem, 326 in the Championship across more than a decade playing for Wolves, QPR and Bolton. Perhaps too old, but definitely experienced and of Taylor ilk
  • Rostyn Griffiths - Australian, 30. Much closer to home, already proven to be decent at A-League level. Would happily have him in midfield as he is good for A-League standards but wouldn't take up and import slot.
  • Mark Milligan - Australian, 32. Same deal as Griffiths, but weirdly seems even less likely than us signing any of the imports

Dean Marney would be a good shout, would be a top player at the A-League level despite his age. A NZ connection as well. Apparently has some interest from lower level English sides but with his age and recent injury, the relative short length of the A-League season could be enticing.

I think us only having 27 games a season is a real draw card for us, and we should be looking a championship players who are a little older and who want an easier gig. Sell that and the lifestyle, I know Wellington can be cold but we have a beautiful city and culture which nothing in Britain is similar to. Gotta be some gems in there who would come on a cut deal if it means that they can keep playing for longer and live in a nice place

Brighton doesn't come close to Wellington. Brits love it because it's one of the few places in the country that isn't constantly grey and cold, but it's certainly not beautiful and doesn't have the vibrant culture that Wellington does. Brighton is just normal Britain but with a beach and more sun

So we got rid of a proven scorer and solid passer in Ljujic, to accomodate for a 'meh' player?

Different role to Ljujic with plenty of experience at a high level. If you read Phoenix social media you would find something saying everyone who ever pulled on a Nix shirt was shark so I wouldn't get too carried away with what a couple of supporters say on one forum.

All plausible speculation.

Karl Henry - Was hated by most QPR supporters as he was a limited player; I was a big fan though. Not a goal scorer by any stretch (although he did score THIS banger), not the best passer or remotely creative, but what he did/does offer is a solid player who consistently breaks up play, puts in crunching tackles and imo we were far more defensively sound when he was on the pitch. Really helped shield the defense and made several last ditch tackles. He had a big rivalry with Joey Barton (he put several hefty challenges on Joey) which was quite amusing as we signed him when Joey was already in the team.

On a non-footballing level, he's a heavy conservative supporter - so I'm not really a fan - and I'd be surprised if he'd move abroad.

Both Milligan & Griffiths would be excellent signings, but I think they'll end up at Aussie clubs if anything.

They hate it as well. Had coaching at my high school from Bannatyne, Marcelo Grohe, an ACFC keeper from circa 2011 (Dan something?) and Jenny Bindon, and post-career Jenny was the only one who genuinely enjoyed herself. Others seemed pretty miserable
