I remember talking to Paul O'Reilly from Southern a couple of seasons ago when I was involved at Waitak - he said Dan Morgan was the best midfielder in the comp at that point, for Ramon to poach him I think that says a lot.

Yeah he went straight into the starting lineup at ACFC last season, which is impressive considering the power they had down the flanks - de Vries, Tade, McCowatt, Iwata, Lea'alafa, etc.

Morgan's not one to be underestimated, big fan of him. Not sure where the speculation linking him to the Nix started though

Am I right in thinking that if we were to sign Essien on a guest contract that it wouldn't count toward the minimum player requirements?
And if that is the case then another/different signing is coming soon regardless?

Yep, we have to sign at least one player before Way leaves.

Billy Celeski is a free agent at the moment. 33 so not over the hill completely. Represented Australia and 90 odd games for Victory. Not a bad swap for Nichols?

If we got Essien then the Sydney home game makes a little more sense. A lot of people would show for that.

He has been a free agent for the last 2 years ...

But apart from Essien, who do we want to see come into the squad? TAWH, Jack-Henry Sinclair, Mitch Duke, Dan Morgan, Tim Payne?

TAHW isn't happening in a hurry. If he got through a Handy Prem season with no injury lay off maybe, but the club aren't taking a chance on a player with his injury record.

Payne burnt his bridges.

Sinclair has not been the best A-M in the Team Wellington side so is unlikely to be considered to make an A-League mark at this stage.

Personally I don't understand the Morgan thing, he's a serviceable NZFC player no more.

I'd be hugely surprised if they sign any NZ players unless there is someone overseas that might come home. Two options have shown a lack of interest, Wihongi is broken, Bevin earns more money ourside the game, Clapham is too old.

What about Justin Gulley. We need RWB cover more than CM.

Didn't really rate him that highly personally but if we were looking for experienced A-League options, Liam Rose recently left his club overseas. 70 odd A-League games whilst at CCM and only 21.

Although he was CCM's youngest player ever given a senior contract (at 17 years of age), CCM did not renew the contract when it ended a year ago.So it's not like the Armenian club paid CCM megabucks to secure his services. He left Australia to pursue his "European dream".

For us, he might be a cover for Mandi or Rufer, but something tells me that he is neither Mandi nor Rufer. Might be a fill-in for departing Way as would not need a visa.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

He would be worth a look and probably not at the level that he would turn down a trial if offered. Ofc I would like a Kiwi but we need to be open to all possibilities.

Good to see Vince and Roly getting on the scoresheet last night.

They have raised the quality of WSW, Adelaide and the Nix by leaving us?

Sounds like Mitch Nichols saw the writing was on the wall after falling down the pecking order at the Phoenix and spoke to Mark Rudan about the possibility of exploring opportunities elsewhere in the transfer window this week. Rudan said he’s looking at SE Asia.

Decent Aussie DMs/CMs/WBs floating around SEA anyone?

I think the "he" refers to Mitch Nichols? So Mitch Nichols is looking in SEA?

I could be wrong though.

Yeah, I took it as Butters is looking for a SEA gig.

At least one squad signing (non-guest) is supposed to be happening this month, as Way leaves. Who's it going to be?

One possible lineup, with understudies:

The obvious gap is DM, and Rudan could even sign two, if he sees Kopa as better at CB.

Interesting that Kumsuz and Stensness have been training with the Nix, so Rudan will have had a good look. Thought Kumsuz has looked good on all the televised games, but particularly good vs Suburbs two weeks ago in a 4-0 smashing. He won most of the 50/50 balls, strong on the ball, got the ball out of tight spaces and off to a teammate in space. Made good decisions. Never gave up, and seems to be improving as the season goes on. Full of tricks too but didn't get a chance to show them this game.

He didn't play this weekend.

DM and LWB cover is the most obvious need, for sure.

surely RWB is the more pressing issue than left? Cacace and Doyle can play left, only really Fenton can play right wing back.

Door not closed to likes of Howieson, Payne if they have a change of heart.

Rudan said the Kiwis deserve just as much praise for contributing towards the team's nine-game unbeaten streak as the foreigners, commenting that he hopes their performances will have other New Zealand players, especially those who rejected trials at the club in pre-season, "sitting up and taking notice".

"I hope there's been somewhat of a shift in terms of them wanting to come and be a part of this club," he said.

Fair point. I don't like Doyle at LWB, but he can do a job there I guess.

Isn't that where Elliot was signed to play?

Believe he's able to play there but it certainly isn't his main or preferred position, that would be on the wings or attacking mid

So Elliot is a cover for Burgess who is a cover for everyone upfront?

Doubt Elliot's cover for anyone. He's a promising player who Nix got for the reserves

I guess they will wait till next week before they announce the additional player we need to replace Nichols.

Speculation about Essien signing on as a guest player seems to have quietened down.

Rumors are the Phoenix made a bid for Rojas in January so are still looking for a big name signing.

Surely he'd be worth another nudge when his new 12 month contract expires? May be a hail mary as that would then be the final year of our 2 year contract - might be willing to throw a bit of many at him come next Jan?

This team with the right 'Big name' could do very well indeed. I'd be happy to sign someone with similar experience and skills as Taylor. Not talking about Ibrahimovic, but someone who's played in a top league and knows that he's doing. Chuck him in MF and take us to the next level!

I would not be surprised if the club is planning to up the ante financially for the licence extension.

Starting of course with us winning the league next year.

Too bad we couldn't get Obafemi Martins.

I'd like to see us pick up a RWB as either backup/challenge for Fenton.

Think getting another CDM/CM player to cover for Madni/Rufer's importnat too.

We really need reinforcements ASAP - I think our smaller squad is really starting to struggle now.

Though TBF, after this weekend we go back to one game a week, and with ACL starting soon, there are a couple of bye weeks. We've been pretty good on the injury front so we've barely needed to use squad players. Though there are a few suspensions lurking soon.

Personally I think the only areas we need to strengthen is to cover for the situations where we decide to bench Singh or 1 of Mandi and Rufer is unavailable. Burgess might be that guy but that looks to be our only weakness in terms of back up at the moment to my mind.
