Even if we do lose to Adelaide, that article would point to the fact that we dont have any plan b anyway.

Phoenix stand-ins Buckingham, Greenacre set to stay distance

Was this article meant to be posted tomorrow???

"Barring a catastrophe in tonight's A-League clash with Adelaide United, Wellington Phoenix interim coaches Des Buckingham and Chris Greenacre will be permanently confirmed in the roles tomorrow."

I would be very disappointed if this was to happen

That surely won't be the case. So underwhelming if true.

Cheap would be the word I'd choose. A cheap response to an issue that might require some serious cash input. And we wonder why we are mediocre at best. Very disappointed if this were true.

With the amount of money they've invested they're not going to skimp on the coach. It's simply the safe option.

Ugh... the signing of a new coach could have been used to ramp up positive publicity... still I will back them till the end of the year and if I see movement continue to do so, but will call for heads if nothing changes.

I'm looking for changes in the middle of the park... whats the point of resigning Rufer and keeping Ridenton around if the never play meaningful minutes. Lia / Roly and Gia have all been average this year, but nothing changes!

Lets get rid of the complacency please!!

Well, if it is theirs it is the least ambitious of our 3 coaching appointments. However, doesn't preclude it being our most successful.

The hot oil seems to indicate this will be the case. They may end up being the best we've ever had, but what on earth would Welnix of seen up to now for them to predict that might happen? In a nutshell, this appointment will show a lack of ambition by the club and based on that, hard to defend them from the knockers.

Look, I'm not a fair weather fan of any team, winning is better than losing but I'm gradually (over the years) gone off the club. Stuff like the loyalty payments, lack of a real marquee, the roadshow circus..... they all chip away at my loyalty.you know, if another NZ team joined the A League tomorrow, I'd seriously think about jumping ship. I don't feel as if the club owners respect the fanbase enough.

Your last sentence appears to sum it up imo. Although I could change "respect" for "Taking for granted".

I have to say that if the appointment of joint coaches goes ahead I will be extremely disappointed in the club and barring a miracle (if such things exist) the season is over. Although I think that a win was possible against Adelaide it still showed me nothing of why they should get the position and it was more of the same stuff, no plan B

What I don't understand about the lack of ambition is... there's so much of the season left, why are they giving up now? This is the A-League, where the top 6 make the playoffs, literally over half the teams make the playoffs and I definitely think we'd be capable of making it with a good coach. But no, aim for mediocrity and never improvement as always with the Phoenix management.

Seriously, I've watched way more A-League matches than I ever have this season (4 out of 5 every single week), and we have a much better team than CCM, Adelaide, Newcastle, Wanderers and right now Perth too. All we needed was a good coach, not even a great coach cause we're the Nix and we'd never get a great coach, just get us a bloody coach that's better than "ok", but nope.

Phoenix management: Fudge the fans who pay money to watch the Nix, we don't give a shark about you. Should we aim to win? Nah, let's aim to do sweet fudge all as always because we have 0 ambition.

Do they want us to get kicked out of the league? Can someone explain this? If we keep underperforming they'll kick us out; do the management not comprehend that? I don't get it.

I don't think that is entirely accurate or fair. Ernie was an inspired/ambitious appointment after all. Who do Welnix get their FOOTBALL advice from - does anyone know who their 'go-to' people are?

I only hope that this is just giving Ramon time to finish the relevant qualifications so he can take us next season.

I doubt it though.

Buckingham and Greenacre to take Phoenix forward

Des Buckingham and Chris Greenacre have been confirmed as the coaches of the Wellington Phoenix for the remainder of the 2016-17 Hyundai A-League season.

The pair took the reins when Ernie Merrick resigned four weeks ago and have been in charge for four games that have seen the team unbeaten in winning one and drawing three.

On Sunday night the Phoenix fought out a scoreless draw with defending champions Adelaide United and were only denied a win by some outstanding saves from United keeper Eugene Galekovic.

Under the FFA regulations Buckingham, who holds a Pro Licence, will be head coach and Greenacre, a former striker with the club who has an A Licence, will be co-coach.

Buckingham said he was looking forward to the challenge.

“I still think this team is capable of making the top four which was our aim at the start of the season,” he said.

“It is good that we have gone four games unbeaten, which I’ve been told hasn’t happened since February 2015, but we could have won all three with a bit of luck.

“We have been handed a fantastic challenge and have been fortunate to have worked with Ernie Merrick who upskilled us and exposed us to a lot of stuff that wouldn’t have happened with other coaches at other clubs.’’

Greenacre, a former Manchester City and Tranmere Rovers striker who was a Phoenix fan favourite in his playing days, said he was pleased to have the coaching situation decided.

“To lose our mentor was tough but that is the nature of the game of football and it has presented us with a fantastic challenge and life is all about challenges”, he said

Wellington Phoenix Chairman Rob Morrison said the club Board were confident that the newly appointed coaches could take the club forward positively.

“We interviewed a number of excellent candidates but with the run of games we have through January, we felt it was too difficult for any new coach to get to grips with a new squad and the challenges of coaching in the A league,” Morrison said.

“We have a really good squad and Des and Chris impressed with their views on what needed to change and how to get the best from the squad.

“The board are confident that Des and Chris can take the team through to the playoffs.”

Both coaches will be available at a media conference at Westpac Stadium on Monday January 2 starting at 2pm.

Don't mind this. Bring in someone new and it could take 10 games before things start to work. The season isn't over yet, so let's support Des and Greenie and help this team get into the 6

Also does this mean that we are going to have one less person on our coaching staff since Ernie has left or will be bringing another assistant/coach in?

They did not get a coach they needed/wanted. At least they have the time to find the right guy. I just hope Chris and Des now step up knowing they are in charge for the rest of the season and we expect better.

Taking the club "Forward" or maintaining a "Holding Pattern" ???

As much as these guys are nice to talk to etc, the ruthless truth is we should be aiming to be number one and not number 6. The performances were reflected in the lack of atmosphere last night that hardly had the fans excited with what was on show.....except that last 5 mins.

You should be aiming to be number one - even if you don't achieve it, it is still the place to aim/strive for.

It's damage limitation purely and simply. They even insinuate in the press release that its only for the year.

from speaking to him a couple of times, Des really knows his stuff and is passionate about coaching (and the nix). Is he ready to step up into the role? Only time will tell, but I think they've made a good start of it so far.

I'm ok with the call. You can't make a long term decision on a manager just to appease fans in the short term.

Yeah, yeah "give them time", let's write off the season. Great. Because it would be so hard for us to make the playoffs and make a good run from here—oh wait, it's not, any good coach would be able to bring us there. What's the point of appointing someone we know will be shark? Seriously, I don't get it. They haven't proven themselves at all (how long til someone points out they're undefeated... well that's against the sharktest teams and dropping points pretty often).

Why should we be appointing someone to prove themselves? Why can't we appoint someone we know will actually do a good job?

I don't think we have a better team than Perth. I'd say about the same. But you are right, they give a shark and the Nix don't ATM. Wanderers appear to have the same problem this season.

The only positive thing out of this is that if the Nix somehow get better then it all good, and if they don't these two will be gone by seasons end anyway. Which says nothing about the club's ambition if I'm already thinking that.
