I just realised - Al-Nassr means "Victory". So McKain's gone to the Saudi equivalent of the Tards.

Ramming liberal dribble down your throat since 2009

since you know so much, Alnassr, can you tell us how much your club paid the Phoenix for the tranfer?

[QUOTE=Phoenix need a quality replacement - Durante <!-- google_ad_section_end(name=storyline) --> <!-- -normal_story_landing- --> <!--start components/story/common_content--> <!-- google_ad_section_start(name=story) -->

Wellington Phoenix captain Andrew Durante is urging the club to sign a quality replacement for Jon McKain after the star centreback's move to big-spending Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.

It is understood the Phoenix will pick up a hefty transfer fee for McKain after an agreement between the two clubs was reached, pending a medical clearance.

The loss of McKain is a significant blow the 27-year-old's defensive partnership with Durante was instrumental in the Phoenix's finals run last season and both players were recognised by receiving call-ups into the Socceroos squad.

"He's a quality player and I really enjoyed playing with him at the back," Durante said.

"He makes my job a lot easier and we had a great partnership towards the back-end of last season.

"It gave a lot of confidence to the team knowing that both of us were back there.

"I'm obviously sad to see him go but it's a fantastic opportunity for him. It shows that playing over here in New Zealand, at the Phoenix, that there's avenues to continue your career and make it overseas.

"It's a fantastic move for him, financially it's great and who knows, it might put him back in the Socceroos mix fulltime."

All Whites defender Ben Sigmund is a readymade replacement for McKain but with Whanganui teenager James Musa the only other specialist centreback in the squad, Durante urged the Phoenix to open the chequebook.

"Obviously you've got Siggy there who can do the job and you've got James Musa, but he's only young and he's still learning the trade. So I think the club needs to go out and find a quality replacement."

McKain wasn't talking yesterday as he waited for the ink to dry on the deal but Phoenix chairman and owner Terry Serepisos said it was sad to see McKain leave the club.

"He's been a fantastic member of the team and has made valuable contributions on and off the field," he said, before putting a positive spin on his defection.

"As a club we take pride in playing a key role in player development.

"Joining a major Saudi Arabian club is a massive opportunity for Jon professionally and the club recognises and fully endorses his desire to further his career."

Before we get too carried away with congratulating ourselves on our (the Nix) role in this deal, the story I heard was that his old coach in Romania got the gig at Alnassr and is calling up some of his old players to join him. If that's true then his profile playing for the Nix in the A League had very little to do with it.

It is the same coach so could be a fair bit of truth in that.

Didn't think anyone believe that PR stuff anyway?

The Saudi league isn't exactly a league that most people aim to play in one day (no offence, Saudi guy)

That may well be the case and I won't dispute it as it could be likely. However, as McKain was a contracted player we certainly have made some money from the sale, and I really would like to know what kind of money we're talking about.

Soft is right.
Just back from 2 weeks on Gold Coast and Sunshine coast.

Need this game tonight to snap back to "Love the Nix"reality check!

...and you and your like are the heart and soul of football fandom in this country, Junior 82.
I take my hat off to you, sir!
That's dedication, one day perhaps the kids will appreciate it too.

Perhaps some of them might grow to be as successful as John McKain in KSA.

Only until they hit the teenage years...

Also I need to resurrect my retirement plan as I won't be relying on their professional football careers (due to the poor coaching they get heh heh). Still - hopeful for late development.
