Paston was good. One of the best games I've seen him have. Was worried about him pre-season, but he's doing alright. Came out really well.

Really disappointed with Caceres. Did a nice cut in from out wide in first half, but that was about it. Gave away the ball terribly in midfield a few times. Central Coast must have all been laughing at him big time.

Agreed re Paston. He was excellent. What I especially liked was his confidence and timing in getting out early a couple of times to take the ball off the foot of the CCM attackers steaming through unopposed. Big improvement from previous seasons in this department.

I wouldn't be making snide digs about him being MoM.

I dont know, all I saw of him was a missed oppourtunity and gave up far to much ball. And yes Paston for mOm. a few nervous moments but kept us in the game with some extremley brave saves. Thought what Andrew d said before the game was interesting regarding why the phoenix get so nervous during games. anyone else hear that?

He came out quickly to clear the ball from dangerous situations outside his box a few times. One in the first half on their right hand side I remember in particular. Second half he dived in to clear a scrappy ball in the box between a whole cluster of players. Was well needed. A couple of solid saves. I thought he should have saved their free kick in the second half cleanly - didn't look that dangerous, but was maybe just playing it safe.

Not been a Paston fan previously... Maybe playing consistently as number 1 has raised his confidence?

Durante was man of match in my opinion. Saved our asses on more than one occasion.
Paston was good without being spectacular so wouldnt get my vote for MOM.

Again, what you said, Col. Claiming that he had "continuing poor command of his area and inability blah blah" is just so at variance with how he played today it's a joke.

OMG, I've become Wellywhatsisname, the Paston stalker guy.

Wee bit frustrating again today, we didn't seem to be able to get the ball down and pass it as we can, lot of long ball forward to Greenacre today.  We seemed to get to the final 3rd and pick the wrong option most times today, balls in behind strikers etc.

Thought they were quite a big lumbering team at times but they did get foward quickly and for about 15  - 20 mins in that second half we seemed to not be able to get hold of the ball.  Our central midfield and defence seemed overrun and outnumbered, thankfully they didn't seem to be able to hit a coo's backside with a banjo, we give that kind of time and room to Mr Smeltz and it will be a different story!

A few wee flashes of good football, lot of long balls forward though, Lia played well, I didn't think Caceras was that bad, he needs games and match sharpness, think we could consider ourselves  lucky to get away with a point today.

And Rojas looked tiny compared with their defenders!!

honestly, those of you who are saying that Paston had an 'average' game should consider switching to cricket, or netball, or the ever-loved rugby. the lad is the only reason why we didn't lose today. he made at least 3 great saves, if not 4 or 5. never spilled a ball, and was super confident. stopped a 1v1 with a great sliding tackle.

I'm pretty steamed at the moment, but I'm going to say it again, Greenacre is not good enough.

And so much other stuff that frustrated the hell out of me. Another week of having to skip over steve-o and irnbru posts....

Maybe just that Greenacre's not a fly solo sort of guy, don't keep your head in the sand

I don't expect flash solo stuff, Auskiwi (although FFS strikers are supposed to do something a bit flash every now and then) but when I see him failing to achieve basic ball control in the box under the normal sorts of pressure that strikers have to deal with I begin to wonder if he's up to it.

And no, my head's not in the sand, but it's definitely spinning after that little lot.

Rubbish, his record shows he knows where the back of the net is.

He is doing the hard work up front and running himself into the ground during matches, but today he was dealing mostly with long high punts up the park that he has little chance of winning against 6ft plus defenders.  Give him some decent chances or some good support in and around the box and am confident he will get us goals.

The most appealing thing I saw today was HNs weight loss programme. Serve me up some cryptosporidium /Campylobacter rather than that poo, anyday.

He did what he was called on to do today, however their strikers were pretty woefull when it came to finishing!

Paston was very good. That save I think that came off his shoulder from close range was excellent. And the sliding tackle was very good. Defence was good, Muscat I liked. Enjoyed the being there, but the game was disappointing. Ifill really is a class act, far out I hope he doesn't get injured at all this season.

I wonder if Ricki will stick with the same team next week. considering Daniel is back and we are playing GCU......

My only change will be on the bench

Hearfield
Costa

I think Paston showed today more courage in controlling his box than he has in past weeks.

Caceres was disappointing, really expected more from him.

Ifill played well, though it was clear his hamstring was still a problem. He did fluff one good chance when he was 1on1 with the keeper, and hacked it across the goal instead of into it.

Really?... I'd not have guessed... yet he was still the most dangerous/creative player we had going forward. Does that not say something?

We didn't have our best game today. I'd take that result. I though Lia had his best game for the phoenix, Paston kept us in the game, and Rojas looked lively when he came on.

Can look lively but isn't a threat, same as Costa. Easy pickings and not going to create too much trouble for any defense.
All 3 off the bench didn't offer anything. Our (lack of) depth exposed. Shows that Daniel is important and we need another real impact player off the bench

Vinnie gives away a lot of needless free kicks.  He did that today.  It's already cost the team this season (in the Melbourne match) and it would be good to see him do some fine tuning in that part of his game.

Rojas looked a threat on debut when he beat his marker down the wing and did a good cross in for us to nearly win the game. He also looked a threat today after Costa hit a long pass to him across the park then he cut inside from the wing down the byline into the box, tried to cross it in but it hit the defenders arm. Both of them have lost the ball too easy at times. But I wouldn't say that they aren't a threat.

Do that every week and we'll be leaders by a long way at the end of the season.

Irrelevant. We need to have the best players available on the park... at all times... we don't have the luxury/capability to develop players (yet - I hope)

I actually thought Rojas did look like a potential threat, moreso than Costa.

I would actually start him next week - why not? Give the Gold Coast defenders something to think about - an unknown quantity who is prepared to run at them. If it's not working out, he can be replaced, simple really.

As for the rest of today, I only seen the game from the 30th minute due to Metlink's amazing services, but it seemed like the same old story - some decent pressure first half, less so 2nd half.

You all know my views on things so I won't bother getting into another debate. There's no point because every game is now the exact same. Something needs to change though, we can't go on like this or we'll just draw every game between now and the end of the season!

Not really as Royal seems to have written him off already, thats what I was commenting upon, not his performance today, which FWIW I thought was no worse than Leo or Caceras played today.

Exactly. I hope they become threats and prove themselves. Reality is, which is the only point here, is that they aren't threats and haven't proven themselves.
