Surely it's time to play two strikers?  Obviously Greenacre up front alone is not working, how many more rounds until we finally play two strikers?

Of concern - crowd only 6700 or so. Back to the faithful mob. That game is hardly going to inspire thousands more to come along. I know what all the non football followers will be saying about a 0-0 draw, whether they watched it or not.
Wins bring crowds.
TV3 made a 'special mention' of 'yet another draw' at the end of the sports news last night. Alistair kindly remined the sports chick that 'at least it wasn't a loss' cue; giggles all round
No coverage, despite the game being over for an hour, Probably tonight?

Alistair is the greatest news presenter since Ron Burgundy. I love that man deeply.

No chance.  Gourdie is away.  No Gourdie, no football.

As much as I think we should try it when it's not quite happening, 2 dedicated up front yesterday wouldn't have given much as we were being overrun in the middle of the park and struggling to get balls down and pass it (the wind didn't help) in any meaningful way forward.

Perhaps another body in there with Lia and Brown may have been a good option yesterday to help us get hold of the game again.

Hopefully McKain back will mean better service to Greenacre.. then the wide players will come into the game a bit more..always hopeful anyways

mckain = better service to greenacre???? I dont think so. Mckain is far better in the central of defence his distribution from the middle of the park tends to be poor.

My two things from yesterday:

1) How much impact does a swirling wind like that have on the players?
2) Why in the last 20 did we put the ball in the air when we had the shortest front 3 ever on the park being marked by blokes who are all of the taller variety?

Apart from that I agree with the match reports, neither team really deserved to win. We weren't great but we kept them quiet which isn't something to be sneezed at. Could McGlinchey work in the Centre of Midfield for the AWs instead of Brown/Elliot or is he to small?

Paul Iffil is sensational, without having watched too much of Culina this year you would have to suggest that Paul along with Carlos have been the two most impressive players in the league this season. He looks brilliant every time he gets the ball. Pasty had one of his better games but still doesn't inspire me with confidence alot of the time.

I thought both Lia and Brown were outstanding, ran with the ball a bit more and looked to get forward. Caceres did some good things but also did some very sh*t things, Daniel to come back next week. Not sold at all on that bench, I presume Hearfield will be on the bench for most of the year as they seem to have decided he is our back up right back but having both Costa and Marco seemed a bit off to me. Seemed as though he picked his squad thinking Ifill wouldn't play and then one of the younguns would start with the other on the bench then Diego/Ferrante/Mulligan/Chen would have been there aswell. When Ifill was pronounced fit he suddenly had to have both the youngsters on the bench.

Big ups on the new songs catching on as well.

Edit: Okay, so more than two things...

By the nature of a clean sheet one must infer paston had a reasonable game, for the sake of the nix and their season I hope he continues to improve, still hasnt won a lot of people over just yet though. Manny was class, a good turn around in form as I feel he has been poor the last few weeks.

Manny was real beneficiary of the Ifill injury.  With Ifill less mobile he was often in a position to cover Manny's forward forays which let Manny become much more of an attacking weapon.

disgree news. Ifill was a passenger in the second half stood 3/4s of the way up the pitch and just strolled around. Manny was a terrier, no thanks to ifill. Herbet should have shown some stones and dragged ifill after 50mins

Also, is there any point in the game where Greenacre got the ball without a Mariners player going through the back of him, without a foul being given ?

Except if your thread idea is adopted we'd never get to choose a starting XI as we'd be going round in circles discussing the same things each week.

Herbert is reactive, not proactive. you will never see him make any ballsy substitutions...

Herbert should've dragged Ifill off when he started having trouble, which was after 30mins. He started to get slower and was stretching alot. Marco could've got 55odd mins. Amazing how well Ifill did tho.

I think Herbert is actually growing a pair, I mean he had both youngsters play at the same time. Something none of us actually thought he was gonna do.

this week we need to play a 4-1-2-1-2 formation and really put pressure on the GCU defense.

What the hell does this even mean?  He was ballsy enough to yank Diego before halftime when underperforming.  I'm not sure what ballsy substitutions you are talking about.

Ferrante on for Ifill - that would be ballsy!

I agree - Herbert has been showing some balls recently, pulling no punches when it comes to sidelining (or demoting) players who have not been performing on the pitch (i.e Diego and Ferrante) while promoting those who do perform (Daniel and arguably Caceras from his first game off the bench).

From the recent home games, I assume that a lot of the decisions made on players who do end up on the bench, has a lot to do with a very proactive approach to selection based on refined and practiced coaching during training days. The sort of stuff we on the forum can only speculate about - basically I don't think Herbert's an idiot and I believe he's a lot more tactical and forward thinking (although possibly quite subtly) than we collectively give him credit for.

What the heck? He should have subbed Ifill earlier? He was about the only one who looked like doing anything in the first half. Then we just didn't touch the ball at the start of the second half, I'm unwilling to blame him for that, but yea - he wasn't looking that fit but he could run when he needed. Ifill obviously said he was fine to carry on and I'm happy with that, as long as they were confident it wasn't going to cause any long-term damage.
