I heard there was some fella by the name of Smeltz who was hanging about the place, who might fit into that category.

Anyone know if he's any good?

So glad Greenie scored, he really deserved to get one! He and D-Mac = chemistry. Football chemistry of course.

I've always thought that Greenie/Big Mac were a good combo. And if we had a Rojas/Ifill combo next season it would be Orsum.

Just imagine the sandwich that C-Diddy could make!

Coolen laments heavy schedule
Sunday, 6 February 2011
by Iain Strachan, Sportal

Adelaide United coach Rini Coolen blamed the packed A-League schedule for his team's 1-0 loss to Wellington Phoenix.

A first-half header from Chris Greenacre sealed Wellington's first victory over Adelaide at Hindmarsh Stadium and ensured the hosts would be unable to catch Gold Coast United in second place.

It was Adelaide's second match in four days after their 0-0 draw away to Gold Coast on Wednesday and Coolen feared the worst before his tired players even took to the field on Saturday.

"First of all you have to prepare your team properly after a really hard schedule," Coolen said.

"To be honest (I was) a little worried before the game already if everybody pulls up well."

"I think my team was not ready to play another game again. But we have to do it, everybody has to do it."

"We started well. In the first half we were better; the first 20 minutes we missed a couple of chances as well as the last fifteen minutes."

"In the second half we came back well and I think we deserved a little bit more today."

"Sometimes you can lose a game where you deserve a little more. What made me angry is the situation we are in from the schedule, but I don't want to use that as an excuse. Everyone has to do it, but one thing is for sure it's not good."

"We've lost that second spot and now we have to fight for position number three. We have to win a home game against Melbourne Victory."

"We have a couple of days to recover and just find out who's available, try to win the game and build up the confidence for the rest of the games."

Wellington goalkeeper Daniel Vukovic was delighted with a win that takes the New Zealand club one step closer to sealing sixth place and a finals berth.

"It's always good to keep a clean sheet, especially away from home," Vukovic said.

"We haven't done too well away from home, so it was good to get that goal and defend the lead."

"I think that's the first time we've won two in a row. It's good for the confidence and we might even play Adelaide first game in the finals, so bit of a psychological win for us. We're close, but not all of the way there yet."

Weary Reds succumb to Phoenix
Saturday, 5 February 2011

Adelaide United FC will now put all of its focus on keeping hold of third spot on the table, after any chance of climbing to second place was extinguished following a 1-0 loss to the Wellington Phoenix at Hindmarsh Stadium.

While there was no shortage of effort from the Reds throughout the 90 minutes, playing a third game in a week on the back of two draining encounters appeared to catch up with the home side as Chris Greenacres first half goal gave the Phoenix their first win in Adelaide in what was the New Zealand clubs 100th Hyundai A-League game since they entered the competition.

The result leaves the Reds four points behind the Central Coast Mariners and out of reach of second position and the double chance, the emphasis for United now is to try and lock down third heading into the finals.

Captain Travis Dodd said the Reds could not use the heavy schedule as an excuse, and that they would need to pick themselves up for what has become a highly significant match against Melbourne Victory at the Adelaide Oval on Friday night.

Its very difficult to back up after three days again, I guess considering the conditions of the last two games it was going to be tough, but we cant use that as an excuse, Dodd said.

We just need to prepare as best we can and go out and play like men and try and grind out results. Unfortunately it didnt happen for us tonight, so thats second spot on the table is unachievable for us now.

It makes our next game against Melbourne ultra important, we need the points and I think we just need the confidence to go into the finals.

Croatian defender Dario Bodrusic was given his debut for the club as he replaced Robert Cornthwaite, who failed to come up for the game due to back soreness, while Coolen also chose to rest Mathew Leckie following his three appearances since recovering from a knee injury.

In stark contrast to the stifling heat that confronted the Reds just seven days earlier against the Mariners, cool blustery conditions greeted the sides for this encounter.

The temperature may have dropped but it did not take long for the game to heat up, Marcos Flores playing Dodd through in the opening 26 seconds, the Reds captain sending an early warning sign to Phoenix keeper Danny Vukovic as he hit his effort across the goal face.

Then in the next 90 seconds it was Wellingtons turn to try their luck and they went inches from scoring when Greenacre had Eugene Galekovic beaten only for Nigel Boogaard to clear the ball just as it was about to cross the goal line.

Some superb interplay in midfield led to the Reds creating two quality opportunities to convert, but some indecision and lack of conviction prevented the home side from finding the back of the net.

The Reds upped the ante as they forced the Phoenix into some desperate defending, however United suffered a blow when a knock to the thigh ended Cassios night after just half an hour, the Brazilians departure giving Osama Malik his first appearance in a Reds shirt since arriving from the North Queensland Fury.

Malik joined Boogaard in the heart of defence sending Bodrusic out to the left, and within four minutes of the reshuffle, the Phoenix struck.

Marco Rojas found Greenacre with an inviting cross from the right, the striker making the most of the quality delivery as he put his header past Galekovic from close range.

Sergio van Dijk flashed a free kick over the bar as the Reds searched for a quick response, Paul Reid then going even closer as Boogaard found the midfielder with a direct ball down the channel, but Reid could not beat Vukovic.

Coolen moved his deck around further for the start of the second half as Bodrusic made way for Adam Hughes, the Reds with 45 minutes to try and keep their second placed hopes alive.

But it was the Phoenix who were providing the impetus, Nick Ward stinging the gloves of Galekovic with a venomous strike from 25 metres before Tim Brown forced another sharp save from the Reds stopper as Wellington looked to drive their advantage home.

Andy Slory was introduced for his home debut and the slick Dutch winger gave the Reds some life with his pace down the left hand side, but time and again the Wellington defence repelled the attacks to frustrate the United faithful.

In the 67th minute Dodd all but thought he had found the equaliser as he nodded a Flores through ball down to his own advantage before sending his shot through the legs of Vukovic.

But with the ball heading towards the goal, Jade North made a desperate slide, which saw the ball come off the Wellington defender, hit the underside of the bar and fall back into the field of play.

As the time was getting away from the Reds, van Dijk was proving a constant threat, but even the leagues leading scorer could not break through the Phoenix barrier.

The Reds continued to press but with a place in the finals on the line, Wellington were not about to let their lead and the three points slip.

Adelaide United will kick off the final weekend of the regular season with a blockbuster against Melbourne Victory at the Adelaide Oval on Friday night. Tickets for the match are available through Ticketek.

I love it how they say this. "yeah its tough, we lost because of this, but its not an excuse". If it wasn't an excuse why go on about it?

Top win....Adelaide has been a death trap for us in the past.

And we did it with a whole lot of key missing players. When Lia went off and Daniel came on I thought ...here we go!!!  We have gone from playing 3 holding midfielders to playing one(Brown) Luckily daniel is a 10x better defender than he used to be.

Maybe we are being too defensive playing Lia,Brown and Muscat all the time. Next season it would be great to see Rojas and Ifill wide with Ward tucked centrally behind a striker and Muscat and Brown as DM's

Phoenix on the rise after rare success

Depleted, yet delighted. The Wellington Phoenix approach the second leg of their A-League soccer road trip in buoyant mood after a ground breaking triumph in Adelaide that allows them to determine their own destiny.

A historic success on Adelaide United's soil last night, a coveted 1-0 scoreline at Hindmarsh Stadium, incorporated several feel good factors for the club, most notably tightening their grip on the sixth and the final playoffs spot.

By achieving consecutive wins for the first time this season --- and only their second victory on the road since Perth on November 7 -- the Phoenix are in the box seat to progress to the finals series for a second successive year with two matches remaining.

They play Sydney FC on Wednesday and then return to the sanctuary of Wellington to play lowly North Queensland, where a win in front of the faithful will be sufficient.

Melbourne Heart dropped out of the race thanks to Chris Greenacre's diving header gave the Phoenix the win, leaving Newcastle and Sydney FC, who meet tonight, as the only other clubs still remotely in contention.

Greenacre initiated just the Phoenix's second win outside of Wellington in 14 attempts this season, a fitting way to celebrate the club's 100th A-League game.

"We're in the box seat now, we've set ourselves up really good," captain Andrew Durante said.

"We haven't had a lot of luck on the road and at times we've been poor as well but at the business end of the season we've knuckled down and got a great result. Mentally it's massive for us.

"If we do make the semis it looks like we'll have to go back to Adelaide so to grind out a 1-0 is going to put us in good stead."

There were downsides, however.

Durante, the heart of the defence, will not be available until the playoffs after collecting an eighth yellow card for handling the ball in the 80th minute.

"It put a dampener on the night but in the back of my mind I'm glad I got it now and not the week after. I'd be gutted if I had to miss a semifinal game," he said.

Durante's enforced absence and the suspensions already being served by Manny Muscat and Ben Sigmund mean 18-year-old defender James Musa will start against Sydney in what will be just his third appearance of his debut season.

A replacement will also be summoned from Wellington after midfielder Vince Lia was ruled out of Wednesday's game due to a hamstring strain sustained last night.

Still, those setbacks could not take the gloss off a Phoenix performance that stirred happy memories for Durante.

"Last season we went on a really strong run at the end of the season and we seem to be doing that again."

On their last away trip -- to the Brisbane Roar on January 26 -- the Phoenix held the title favourites at bay until conceding two late goals.

"We were well organised again, we had a gameplan to frustrate them and they didn't really cause us too many problems," Durante said.

Adelaide United coach Rini Coolen, whose side can now finish no higher than third, reiterated his concerns about scheduling after being lumped with three games in a week, including a match on the Gold Coast played in 94 percent humidity last Wednesday.

"We have three, four or five players with muscle problems and (who) couldn't train because of the travel schedule," he said.

"It's not good for the players, it's dangerous."

The Phoenix endured a similar programme when their game against the Roar was postponed due to the Queensland floods and Durante realised Adelaide would be lethargic.

"We knew they'd be heavy legged. Three games in a week is tough. We wanted to get them on the back foot early. We did that, we got a well worked goal them we shut up shop."

that's the great thing about having a winger who can place his crosses. We have been needing one of those for the last 3.5 seasons

Queenslander 3x a year.
