Fury played very well for long stretches. We weren't fantastic but we did the job and got a solid away point.

I'm not unhappy with the point.
neither but we really needed the 3 and probably should have had them

1. Not starting, in a must win game, your passionate, inspirational captain, who has been one of the few form players all season, f**king stupid - don't give me bollocks about not changing a winning team - it was near as dammit Newcastle B who had traveled over after playing 3 days before.

2. Vuko - bloody good keeper - I'll be very sorry to see him go.
3. What Sigmund and Brown lack in skill and pace they nearly make up for in pride in the shirt.
4. North was again, very very good - I hope we can keep him next season.
5. Any team that Lia is good enough to start in is screwed - Lochhead to FB and Manny to to DM. Lia to who cares.......
6. Mac seems a good guy but he truly is a donkey.
7. Greeny (who I think is a great club man) is reaching his best by date - next season I suspect his last but good to have coming off the bench.
8. Ward gives a taste of what we could do if we had 2 or 3 players with some skill, pace and vision.
9. Wrong tactics for Marco to shine - lump ball not ideal for a short arse.
10. Herbert - sh*t house tactics - assuming the team followed instructions.
11. I really hope we show some ambition with next seasons signings.
We got out of jail and the Fury can justifiably feel robbed - our season is hanging on by a very thin thread.
The end.

My Question of the Match - what match were YOU guys watching where Rojas did anything at all in the first half apart from give one dodgy pass to Big Mac, which you of course blamed on "the Donkey" because the Golden Child can do no wrong?

rojas, so special

No-one's denying that Rojas has talent, but he's also 19 years old and he's not Paul Ifill yet, let alone Lionel Messi. I got pissed off at the people who were yelling that "give Marco the ball" was a total solution to our problems, and even more pissed off at the "how can we score when Marco's not on the field?" nonsense, which was proved wrong in a few minutes.

Spot on. Ward simply had to start that game if we wanted to win it. Technically our best midfield player by a mile. Most A League sides now are way better technically across the eleven. Not the conditions or tactics for Rojas to shine. I don't get why Bertos starts. He's a bench player for a last 20 minute cameo at best now. Anythings possible in the games left, but realistically we need to be ruthlessly honest about some of these guys for next year, and get real serious with our signings. WC got in the way pre season - no question about that. Winning the league with starting players like Lia, Bertos, Greeny, DMac and Hearfield is never ever gonna happen.

1. I don't recall anyone calling him Paul Ifill.
2. Certainly no one compared him to Lionel Messi.
3. He didn't get enough ball last night so the calls to pass it to him were warranted to a degree.
4. Also didn't see anyone say "how can we score when Marco's not on the field?" but it was probably a bad move taking him off as he was one of few players on the park with the ability to start something from nothing which is what we needed. Fair enough Ward offered us that when he came on but hindsight's a wonderful thing etc.
Unless Marco came off because of injury/fatigue it was a bad move and that's all most people were saying. No one was saying we're nothing without him or anything like you're suggesting.
Fuck this stupid game

Well, I have to say I didn't feel so good about this game when I saw Dura wasn't starting! He's never played a bad game for us, and there's the whole "never change a winning line-up" but last weeks was a 4-4-2, and this week was a 4-4-3? Lia is a complete thug, I don't want to see him starting next week, play anyone else, I don't care, just not Lia. I DO NOT dream of a team of Vinnie Lia's, not at all. MacAllister gave the ball away and cost us several goals, although he did finally score, but I'm still not happy with him, he was being quite the donkey last night. Leo gave the ball away constantly, and I don't think he should be starting if his groin injury is causing him to play so terribley. Muscat had a dire game, nearly causing a penalty and just his defending was awful! I was thinking he was one of the most consistent players but last night was his worst game ever, as far as I recall.
Right. My angst is out now, I'm done, and I'm willing to go on and think about the next game, and the positives of this match. <lets out deep breath>

after failing to score 3 last night and not assisting with 5 he should be dropped Kosta style right?
Because those are the only two options - "Marco is our Lord and Saviour and must be given the ball at all times" vs. "Sack Rojas"? I prefer another option: "The guy has special talent but I'm not going to throw a tantrum if he gets subbed off after an anonymous 60 minutes, perhaps because he doesn't like playing in a tropical storm". Did anyone consider that perhaps he can't play his natural game when the ground is the consistency of chocolate pudding?
I repeat: we scored after he came off. The two are not causally related, but it indicates that he is not The One. (And Rojas was being compared to Lionel Messi in his own thread, before it turned into "Kosta was being held down by the evil Ricki".)

Yes, yes I do. It's called "satire" - deliberately exaggerating other people's positions so that they look ridiculous. The essential point I was making was that the howls of despair people made when Rojas was subbed off were ridiculous.

People are being quite level head about Rojas. So he gets his photo in the paper and is on TV. Its December and the media are short of local stories. He's still just a kid who has just had his first away start. Most people are level headed enough to recognise the fact that his career is in its infancy.
The trouble is, Doloras, your satirical comments about the "golden boy" etc are a pathetic attempt to chop down a talented youngster just coz he has got a bit of publicity. Most YF fans are mature enough to watch Rojas play without building him up or chopping him down.

There you go again, you can call it "satire" or "delberate exaggeration" but the truth is no one has been "howking with dispair" over Rojas getting subded. Go back and read all the posts. Apart from comments about Rojas seeing litttle of the ball or having a quiet game or not getting many passes NOBODY has been angst-ing about him.

If you're right, and I hallucinated all those people screaming with rage in this very thread when Marco was subbed, calling it the worst mistake Ricki Herbert has ever made, talking about how we were now doomed to lose the match, etc etc., I'm still not sure how this makes me "pathetic" or reveals an anti-Marco agenda. I wonder what you think my motivations might be. Am I jealous I didn't get the YF scholarship myself (despite being the wrong gender and age)? Do I hate Chileans? Because I'm interested to know why I want to "chop Marco down".
I suppose I should repeat what I thought my central point was: Ricki's decision to sub Marco did not lose us the match. If I wanted to chop anything down, it was the "Ricki Herbert is a crap coach compared to anonymous posts on an internet forum".

The truth is that many kiwis have an uneasy relationship witht the concept of talent. Maybe its something to do with our egaletarian society where no one is allowed to rise above the norm. We feel the need to draw them back into the pack, to let them know they might be getting to big for their boots. Rojas is not in this catagory but the history of NZ sport is littered with mega talented sports people who achieved greatness but were frequently attacked....Martin Crowe, Jona Lomu, John Walker.
We seem to love the battler coming up but then try to undermine them when they reached the top.
I have been surprised by the reaction of people to Rojas. He's only had two starts. We should not be over hyping him or over criticising at this stage. He just needs to be left alone to develop his game.

The definition for blasphemy from dictionary.com is
"an act of cursing or reviling God."
If Vince Lia is god, that must be the reason why he's in the starting line-up each week. Because he's god, not because he's good at football.

Yes, this is true. And if I had attacked Marco, or suggested that he wasn't a brilliant talent or didn't deserve to be starting in the team, your essay would be relevant. My point was that Ricki wasn't necessarily making a terrible fatal mistake for subbing Marco after 60 minutes in squelchy mud and torrential rain when he clearly wasn't playing his natural game.
We salvaged a lucky point from the game, so Ricki clearly didn't screw up too badly. The question of whether Big Mac is the right person to play up front is a completely separate one. I think he did "okay" (not great), but who to replace him with? Pav?

surprised we bag Lia when we support the club that signed McCallister and let KB go.
Lia and Sigmund are just about our best players this season. Clearly we need higher skilled players alongside them (Ifill/Rojas) but their commitment and effort is far superior to a number of our more 'flashier' players. Lia has set up more goals than he has butchered or given away...
most matches Lia provides more than Ward and Brown and quite often Leo and Daniel too. I think you guys are too harsh on him.
