Well done auckland. There were doubters but a year ago I said we should have a game at the garden and I said we would crack 20000
more then double the highest knight game
the highest ever crowd for a Phoenix game during the regular season
Come back next year
I hope we don't delude ourselves, we were awful and frankly didn't deserve a point.

Special mention of Lochhead (worst game I think I've ever seem him play) and Bertos (half expecting him to turn up in a skirt next week).

Any midfield that has both handbrakes Lia and Brown in it is stuffed - Herbert learnt nothing from the time we were forced, by injuries and suspensions,to play with more skillful attacking midfieldersand actually looked good. He just can't wean himself off the dour, slow DMs.

Djite is class and owned Durante and SigmUnd.

Until Ifill came on we lookedexactly likewhat we are - a team of aging journeymen.

Roll on the transfer window.

To finish on a positive note - the ref had a very good game.
Agree about the ref. Only half agree about Lochhead, I have seen him play worse than that, but we will get bagged for making that comment as there are a few on this forum that think he is great.
I don't think he would get in any other A league side.( I know he would'nt)

You were spot on, and I couldn't be happier. Auckland did a bloody good job hosting and I'd love to come back again.
(But I still maintain that Hamilton deserved a match before Auckland

The midfield got well beaten. The Brown/Lia/Smith combo was not as good as what I thought it would be. Also, how can we have 37 corners and not one goes in the back of the net?! Jesus titty..
Why exactly did you think it would be good?

Lia and Brown have always been just servicable and Smith is a slightly below average player in my books. Thought that Lia picked up a little towards the end though - understandable he was a bit average considering his time out. Hugely disappointed in Brown's performance though.
I think it was just blind optimism in the build up to the game
. If we had Manny and Sanchez in there it would be a different story. But I can't see that happening soon with Sanchez out injured and Manny filling the hole at right back..

I agree my old uni town deserves a real season game and would pull 12k at the very least. Hopefully the new owners will spread a few games around next year. Exciting times

We were certainly not the greatest. First half was dire and we deservedly went behind.
We got a hell of a lot better after Ifill came on. Daniel helped to at least make us look a threat, but we were supposed to be the home team!

Far worse for me was the Sky Sports commentary duo, whoever they were. I couldnt stand listening to them, it was like listening to two boring old geezers sitting next to you who talk throughout the match. Im listening to Newcastle v Brisbane now and these commentators are a different league. I had second half turned down as low as I could manage.

Why dont commentators just tell us whos on the ball, rather than tryingto prove they arebetter experts than the players, and maybe give us a summary of what we may have missed seeing when the ball is finally dead???
A lot of people slate the Sky commentators but this is probably the most accurate description I've read. And I agree whole heartedly. Dewhurst talks as though he could go out there and do better. I enjoyed the Pommy fella that was doing a game I watched last week. (not just cos of his accent btw)

From stuff.co.nz :
A problem with the ticketing system at the stadium left some spectators stranded outside the stadium for the first 20 minutes of the game. While some people may have given up queuing and gone home, there was still an impressive crowd of 20,078 that made it into the 50,000 seater stadium.
Could have been a bigger crowd

Enjoyed the game even though the quality wasn't the best. A decent crowd and atmosphere. Good to catch up with some of the fever lads and also get my mate along who is now amping to come to a Welly match, as am i.
Three for me, and two for them.

An utterly dull game and it says it all that Adelaide scored for us because we were never going to ourselves.
Despite Ricki being "happy with the squad", we are simply not good enough in MANY areas.
Lochhead = crap
Brown = Missing in action for 90% of games every single week
Smith = extremely average, seems to be copying Brown in being invisible for the most part
Bertos = absolutely crap, cannot cross a ball, cannot beat a player and yet he is apparently a winger?
Greenacre = tries hard no doubt, but almost useless stuck up there by himself
Ricki = one-dimensional tactics, beginning to get extremely tiresome.

Thought that would have been the case. We got there pretty late and the line for tickets was still massive.
Decent game pretty good result tho considering the chances Adelaide had

Well done auckland...20,000 is a fabulous crowd.
That game was not a great advertisement for football or the Nix.We were so crap for 60 minutes. Thinks only started to happen when Ifill and Daniel came on. We really do have quite a few journeyman players....Leo is a shadow of the player he was 3 years ago. Lia and Brown in midfield together....what can you say, there skill level is just so low that they just choke off any attacking moves.
I really don't understand it....people around me were shaking their heads when yet another pass went out or straight to another opposite player. No body was making runs. Greenacre played deep and held the ball up nicely but he looks a bit slow when it comes to making runs forward....looks a bit burnt out IMO(not surprising with his workload this season).
On the positive side Ifill looked hungry...if we can get Sanchez back, drop Leo for Daniel and not play both Lia and Brown then things may pick up.
But in reality that was close to our top team. Adelaide were missing 6 players and lost Cassio early. To me that was points dropped.

lol pub where I watched it (somewhere in Kingsland) was full of people watching the game, seems most of them didn't pre buy tickets then cbf waiting once the game started, Aucklanders :P
waited for 40 minutes to get tickets, missed 30 mins of first half soooo...maybe fair enough, was extraordniarily slow service there. No GA tickets really slowed up the process, and nobody could go and sell to the line. And they were charging 32 on the gate not 25...
still was great to see the 'Nix in Auckland. Hate Bruce Djite- still think he's a prick for putting his studs through Paston's knee. martinb2011-11-19 22:27:20

Oh god yes! They are beyond terrible and suck any kind of life out of a game. It's ok to just shut the f**k up occasionally, guys - it's not a radio broadcast - we can see what's happening

Sports commentators in general are pretty dire, though. You really appreciate the good ones.
I wouldnt even mind that if they just explained what was happening. But no, they insist on waffling on about whos in form, whose playing well or badly, what the league positions are, what Ricky Herbert is thinking, how they would do better if they were playing, what the players/ref/lino should have done if they were as brilliant as the commentators, what the tab is paying and lots of stuff far less interesting than that. just shut the f up. Surely these days we can be given a "no commentary" option? To be fair to the others, today was by a mile the worst commentary i have had to endure. its worth a season ticket just not to have to listen to that crap.

The commentators on Phoenix games also seem to be too loud - I can hardly hear the atmosphere in the stadium due to these clowns waffling on constantly, but they almost sound like they are sitting in a studio somewhere and aren't even at the game!

More then happy with a point. Some of our players are "past use by date". In the matter of fact, for some of them I wonder how they became professionals.
"The path to professional football is not easy," warned Herbert. "Only the very best will make the grade.

Eden park definetly got caught unawares. I have been there at least 50 times and I have never seen quees like that for beer and food. I am sorry that a visitor had to see the stadium like that. that is frustrating as the owners/nz football say we must do well and when we do they don't respond

Im sure the owners/nz football are frustrated that what is supposedly one of the best stadiums in NZ seems to have chosen a Phoenix game to put on a bad performance. No doubt the usual excuses will be trotted out.GET YOUR SHIRTS OFF FOR THE BOYS

Good turn out Auckland. I was impressed. Had to laugh though at all the people still queuing for tickets when the game started. Disappointed in the queues to get to food and beer, and the TV's didn't even have the game on them so you could watch while you queued. We are definitely playing with 8 or 9 players though, surely we couldn't be any worse with a couple of local boys than we are at the moment. At least we got a point though.

Just got back to wellys (and to work unfortunately...) and had a blast! Great stadium, felt a lot closer to the pitch and the zone was on the halfway mark which was cool. Pity about the bar queue aye, the need to get that sorted.
Bit of an average game. Thought leo popped up in great places, but he doesnt seem to have the speed or ball skills that he used to. Is it confidence? Iffy tried really hard, almost too hard. Alex Smith dissapeared, as did Tim Brown (although he still popped up near the goal mouth). Average goal to concede.

Totally agree RE Bertos he still has speed you can see it when runs without the ball, as soon as het gets it he takes off with good exceleration and then slows to a stop and turns his back to the defender when he reaches them.
I also notice his head is quick to drop when he loses the ball and when it happens early in the game I feel for him as he really struggles to get out of first gear with the ball.
RE Alex Smith, I am thinking he is being affected by the positional changes or is he more just a squad player - he is far from embarressing himself yet he does not shine either....

Hey thanks Phoenix for giving us Jaffas a great show. I'm guilty for never turning up to Kingz/knights match due to the fact they never deserved my seat. Have to say though , we really need a true gritter skillful stricker like Shane Smeltz. But thank god for the equalizer yesterday or many Aucklanders like me would not be satisfied.

The man has a point. Some of the performances on and off the filed at the Kingz /Knights were terrible. And it is what a lot of us moan about week in week out on here.
It was a very low key effort by the Nix yesterday. Only really came to life when Ifill came on, he had a sense of urgency and knew where the goal was. Was prepared to back himself and his skills.

Waitak were better than the Knights to go see, tbh. And so we did.
