I'd like see more of Downey than make a sweeping claim like that.

Well just going on what we've seen so far of Downey- and I made it to pre-season games he was in (Waitak and Tauranga) v Pav's recent improvment, ability to trap the ball and pass it using the side of the foot. Also has finished a couple, though, yes fair to say more required there.

Happy to sneak one had to be our turn.Has Ricki at last found out what to do with Leo,he looked better than he has done for ages.Lets see if Ricki can resist the urge to mess around to much with a winning team.

How much do you think being left out of the starting lineup helped Leo?

First of all, he comes on fresh against tired players. Secondly, he's benched by the coach who's always started him and has a point to prove.

Win win?

If thats the case then it wont hurt to see him do it again off the bench.Seem to recall a game earlier in the season when many of us thought he was back ,only for him to revert back next game.

I'm seeing a faster Hearfield, but with less football ability.

Happy for the 3 points but jeeze...what a bizzarre game.

Half way into the second half GC had 22 shot to our 8....they had 30 shots last game and cound't win. So a huge relief that we didn't recruit  Mr "I'm worth $400,000 a season" Rigters.

We got through that because, as Miron said the Nix have more experianced and physically robust players. We did enough scrambling defense and shutting down to get through it but it was a very close run thing. They were a bit niave in their finishing.

Rickies selection and subs were bizarre. Totally unfair on Daniel IMO should have played at least 60 mins. That cross for Browns goal was world class, flat dipping and right on the spot. Brilliant finish from Brown too.... ifill is not well, worst game for ages. Leo was great as an impact sub.

Daniel again proved his worth, really not sure what he can do to get more game time.
Bertos had some impact coming on which was good.
Ward and Smith invisible.

Probably not possible but next week Lia for Smith and perhaps Daniel for Ifill. That would be about as far as I would go (if that)

More time for Ifill if he's not bork3ed and he'll get better so if he's up to it he'd stay.  I'd swap Daniel for Ward, that change should never have happened anyway.

Swap Daniel for Iffy, but bring him on early in the second half, and leave Leo on the bench...?

Would like smith to stay, like some of the stuff he does.Im with HN Daniel for Ward.Have to beat the Jets or my life becomes misery.

Wonder if Timmy will get sent to the away supporters stand for that.

Yeah that was a real left field one the Daniel for Ward. I don't think anyone picked both Bertos and Daniel to get benched for Ward of all people.

back in from the game-we did cough up a lot of chances for the GC - just before Timmy scored I said to the bro-in-law that we might just nick this one -wife copped a feel of Tim during his goal celebrations -kids are also very excited as Ricky came over and thanked them for their support.

Fantastic to finally get an away win!! Hats off go Timmy and Manny, and the return of Paston to goalkeeping duties.

Surely now they can draw on the 23 Dec match to beat Newcastle on Friday and consolidate their position in the top six?!

Good on you Nix supporters who were at the game. Could hear the chanting loud and clear on telly.

Oh Wellington
is wonderful
we have the wind the rain..

and an away win...

Good to have had a change of starters even if it was a bit left field.  Didnt gel tho.

Ifill needs another start to get back into it.  Daniel for Ward and keep rest unchanged.  Little else to change given the team is not coming back to Welly first.

That it was Ward that replaced him, was a little out of the blue (considering Ward was supposed to be injured) but I'm not sure why anyone is suprised Daniel was left out of the starting lineup - performing away from the RoF has never been his strong point.

Herbert has benched Bertos for extended periods in the past, when he's not been performing (last season IIRC?) - so again not really suprising. I personally think that by the end of the season, proving he gets more game time, opinions will change to positive about Downey - good positioning, very good pace, the touch will come back with a bit of consistent time on the field. In terms of the one-on-one in reality only, say, 20% of the players in the a-league would have scored that consistently, I think people are being a bit harsh.

The only real coaching shocker was Miron not reacting to his first change. It was immediately obvious that after moving Salley from the midfield into a back 4, the Nix were allowed back into the game. The midfield opened up for the Nix and GC's ability to transition straight through the middle basically disappeared. He had a strange fixation on old vs young players, rather than trying to fix the structural problems that ended up losing the game for his team.

It wasn't just the personel, it was a formation change. I actually prefer that formation but don't really think our players are mobile enough to make it work, Brown, Ward and Ifill needed to cover a lot more ground. Big ups to our defense but the rest of the starters were all a bit disapointing. Very lucky to win that game.

It was fascinating listening to Mirons comments. He certainly isn't one for keeping things simple. Great attention to detail, just not sure his players will be taking everything in.

Good result boys, not a great performance but will take it!
Another nice goal from Timmy... also felt he played ok through out.

Possibly worst game for Ifill in Nix strip. Anonymous all game.

Downey aside from that blunder in front of goal, thought he made some lovely runs straight over the sideline.

Good to see Pasty back although I still think little difference between him and Warner.

Manny. fantastic goal line nutmeg of Kristian Rees!

Siggy just getting better and better

I know this divides opinion but IMHO all performance indicators being equal, national hero >>>>> Warner.

Yes Ahmad, but I think The Immovable Sigrock All Action Hero is worth too much to us in the heart of defence to move him back to play in goal mate.

Ifill looked very short of a decent run, Bertos looked reved up coming on from the bench, not sure why Sacnez was yanked so early but thankfully it didn't seem to hurt us too much....Daniel neeeded to be on sooner - happy with the win but god that was ugly.

Will take an ugly win any day of the week.

Predict a scratchy win on Friday against the Jets with Topor-Stanley scoring a screamer of an on goal after 83 minutes with a trademark sliced clearance or alternatively Ifill has an absolute blinder becoming first Nix player to score a hat trick!

Agree with most , was at the game and the Nix supporters were great.
Comments were things like we were out played by the bottom team. How can Ricki pick a player who has not played for weeks over Daniel.Ifill looked injured.Keeper and back four were the only players that did us justice.
If we want to compete we have to have a much better midfield.
I've been to two out of the last three Nix games and we have got six points. We were lucky yesterday but if everyone turns up on Friday we have a great chance for another three points.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

I liked seeing Leo from the bench, and would have him there again. Daniel to start.

i was dissapointed with the lack of versatility on bench but luckily it didnt hurt us,
Would like Lindsay, Ward and Leo on bench next game

I thought things turned around as soon as Leo came on. We had a real issue transitioning the ball up the field before that. Despite the fact that he isn't beating players one on one, he still works harder than any of our other midfielders, he gets more touches, he makes more runs to receive the ball and gets into better spaces. I guess the formation also changed once Leo came on, and also Gold Coast were tiring from a very pressing defence, either of which could be the difference.

But I don't think Leo is playing anywhere near as badly as the majority of people on this forum do. Agree he had a bit of a shocker against Perth, but then so did a lot of other players.

I loved one point at the end where we seemed to have both Leo and Daniel playing wide on the left, Ifill and Downey on the right and Greenie up front leaving Brownie as the only midfielder.

Sort of
                         Paston
Muscat - SigmUnd - Dura - Lochhead

Ifill                                              Bertos
Downey              Brown               Daniel
                        Greenacre

I wonder if Craig Foster would approve?
