I know you advocate this but I will ask you again. What is your recommendation to fix it. Any old ass clown that is a fan of thugby and never seen a Phoenix game can say 'we need a clear out' but no one ever comes up with the details.

"We need a clear out"

"Oh... um....."

I think we are on the right track. We now have a PR person that was needed. Ed has been signed full time as a fitness man, we are on the hunt for a coach and its been rumoured that some players have started looking elsewhere because they have are not happy with terms that have been offered. Outside of that, they are on that track so why can't you at least say 'We have started the process' and be positive about it for once?

I am no rugby fan so that's irrelevant.  But my recommendation is to get rid of players who no longer cut it - Lia, Lochhead, Paston (yes, gone), Bertos, Smith, possibly Sanchez and others.  Yes, we've started on the process, but if we start next season with the back 4 of Bertos, Durante, Sigmund, Lochhead, then we better prepare for another long season ahead.

We have 6 months to sort out the mess that is currently our below par squad. That's plenty time, and there should be no excuses at the start of next season.

Also, MAJOR work on movement and set pieces is required.  Standing around and jogging aimlessly is not working.  170 corners and zero goals?  Free kicks have also been woeful, and nobody moves at throw-ins either.

The comment about being a rugby fan was not directed at you. It was more 'anyone can say we need a clear out' without having the smarts to really figure it out or back it up.

I don't think I have too much of an issue if Lochhead and Bertos are kept on but definitely not at their current wage. 2nd Best commented that Bertos was not happy with the offer he got and is sniffing at the Jest. I do wonder in some respects what a new coach will get out of them in a different (perhaps better?) set up. I do not believe either of them are washed up but the best before date is getting close (perhaps has already arrived for Ifill)

I would think that any coach that has applied, has done some homework and seen the footage of what is there, who is off contract etc.At the moment, I have no issue with the direction the club is taking*.

Stevie, does make sense.

If you went through player by player I would expect there would be a major cleanout

Bertos, strength is awesome work rate, mobility and speed, weakness goal scoring, ability to beat the player and for a prfoessional player horrendeous at crossing. Will he improve those facets of his game, its not expected at this point. As much as it  pains me his contract should not be renewed.

Two imports who struggle to command a starting place in the bottom placed team.

We know what Lia offers and again is it sufficient to improve the team?

Lochead polarises opinion, what I know is that I can rely on Tony hitting the first man on 90% of his cross atempts, goneski.

Players that concern me going forward.

Ben, he is a whole hearted player but isnt an A league quality player, also doesnt score from corners. Though we can say that for the whole team.

Iffil, one season too long, injuries, age and lack of passion.

Brockie, what is up with this guy, looks absolutly lost, lazy and out of his depth but still scores 15? goals.

Anyway back to my knitting.

There's not going to be a "major clearout". We have 8 players off contract at the end of the season (9 if you include Pantelis). At the end of last season, 7 players left us (Brown, Ward, Daniel, Tsats, Warner, Greenie, Griffiths).

I don't think that we had a "clear-out" in the last off-season, so even if all of the off contract players leave us, this exodus won't be any different to the one at the end of last season.

The key is going to be who replaces the potential 7 leaving players. If we recruit well, we will be able to replace half of the starting line-up. If we recruit badly, then it'll be the same starting XI and nothing will improve.

My point is that it is the quality of recruitment that is the key, not a matter of getting rid as many players as we can so that we can have a "clear out".

My friend went down the  MV end to get Archie's autograph. Was a laugh seeing him in his Phx shirts surrounded by all the Melbourne.

..and Archie obliged. Loved the look on his face when he saw the that shirt.

It is not so easy to just "get rid of players who no longer cut it" - there is a small thing called the salary cap to take into account.

I think it is unlikely anyone who is contracted past this season will be getting cut from the squad. I see whoever the new coach is will be given a couple of seasons grace (within reason - have to be more competitive than this last season) to rebuild the squad and implement a system and be really measured on their 3rd season - similar situation to the 'Nix's first 3 seasons.

Bullion.

In a league with a salary cap, are those "allowances" really thought to occur, bar situations such as a new team enters the league (unable to judge before displaying what they're about).

For me, the club is one year in to whatever it is they are trying to do. New coach/ players aren't a fresh approach while the club says it wants this and that. That remaining, unable to separate responsibilities.

I would say there should be some allowances, most of our big wage earners are still contracted for future seasons and of those coming off contract Bertos and Lochhead the only ones on probably above average salary. Unless we look at moving one of our higher paid players to a marquee status or bring in a marquee player, unlikely given owners are trying to balance the books, I don't see huge amounts of cap space to recruit known quality players - as well as limited foreign player spots (only 1 - Hernandez, Ifill, Husygems and Totori all signed up). It doesn't allow for much change to what our starting XI currently is (maybe a new LB, RB and midfielder) for next season with youth or cheap squad players (hopefully with potential and undervalued) making up the rest of possible recruitment for a new coach. The coaches second season he will have more flexibility with Husygems, Ifill, Muscat, Totori and Lia coming off contract at the end of 13/14.
