A few weeks ago before the Roar game someone here said that the Nix were expert at playing other teams back into form.

They were right but they meant the Reds.

Sorry to break it to you all but Tim Brown is NOT up to it. What does Ricki Herbet see in this guy? I do not understand. Sure he scores a goal every one in 5 games but that's it. When do you ever see Tim Brown dictate play and really make a difference in the game? You don't. He never turns on the ball to create angles. He is also probably slower than Daniel which is saying something.

If Tim Brown is what the club symbolizes (which many people have said) than that is mediocrity.

I really like Tim Brown and I would absolutely LOVE to be proven wrong, but on the basis of the majority of his performances for the Phoenix, he is just not good enough in my eyes.

The ref was rather one-sided in some of his calls, but we should expect that by now.

Smith should have been playing, at least we would have used what possession we had better.
Daniel and Sanchez never had a chance with Brown and Lia midfield too slow on the ball and no creative thought.

Brown's yellow for that unnecessary challenge sums up all he has really done for the team recently. He should have scored from his header.

I've been saying it for a while, and it's still true, Greenacre is wasted up front, and is crap for us running back deep to 'hold the ball up'. Please, he's meant to be a striker, and he more often plays midfield, can't win a header when it matters, and it bullied by most defenders in the league.
He can run all day long, his goal tally speaks volumes.

Bertos, please don't take any corners or free-kicks.

Lochhead looked like he needed another week to get up to speed.

Some very odd subs made by Ricki, really no idea what he was thinking.

Well, after his 5th yellow card,  we will see what kind of impact Brown's absence will make.  I hope Smith will get a chance next wednesday.  Bertos was also very disappointing last night

Not his fifth yellow ... only his third.

Not his fifth yellow ... only his third.

For those that missed it last night, Piney said that the Fox commentator got it wrong because the two yellows that got Brown his red don't count as yellows towards suspension*

*Any errors in this statement are mine alone. Just relaying what I interpreted from the forum post by Piney somewhere in this thread around the time the commentators made the comment.

agree here...but worse..with 10 minutes to go, we  have 4 players at back marking 1 of there's..wake up Ricki, 2-0 down with 10 minutes go...a defender comes off, or push one forward

Sigh, time for me to finally join the angst queue....

Bloody Ricki...makes decent subs when winning, cannot make decent subs when losing, if we are losing he makes the same subs he would make if we were winning....it's like he thinks before the game that players x,x,x will replace players y,y,y and he cannot move from that....

...every time I saw a sub getting ready I thought who I (or any manager who wanted to win) would replace and then who Ricki would replace and EVERY time I picked it, it is so predictable...

...Sub 1 - Pavlosh*t - I thought ok we are losing, take off a defensive mid, but knowing Ricki it will be Daniel, the player who has created most of our recent goals, who does he take off, Daniel... d'oh!

...Sub 2 - Ward - I thought, ok now it really has to be a defensive mid or a defender, change shape and go for the win.  No wait it is Ricki he won't do that, ok if he really wants to take off an attacking player, I could live with Bertos who has been rubbish, but no he will take off our person most likely to score, a striker Greenacre....Ricki just can't play two up front even when 2-0 down.....who comes off....Greenacre...knew it...sigh....

...Sub 3 - The Gimp - NOW we MUST change formation and lose a defender or defensive mid, f**k all time to go, still 2-0 down rather lose 3-0 and really go for the win the just draw the game out to a slow death...... wait it's Ricki so this defender will have to come on and try to replace our most creative player, the ONLY player who is going to make something happen so it will be Sanchez..... and then...... Sanchez leaves the field..... my Ricki sub picks are 3 from 3, the subs I would have made are 0/3.

I understand starting with one up front but when 2-0 down late in the game why the f**k do we continue with the old 4-2-3-1???  Are our 6 defensive positioned players gonna win the game for us?  Has Ricki ever planned a second formation or is it 4-2-3-1 or bust??

Why take off our two players likely to create chances and our one player likely to score those chances? Makes no sense!

Should have been a defensive mid or a defender or f**king Bertos....he used to be good Ricki, USED TO!!!

On Bertos, why did he go back to taking set pieces? He took a freekick and then corner in quick succession and just like the subs I knew exactly what would happen, freekick to hit the wall, corner to hit the first man....this is what he does almost EVERYTIME...  occassionally he realises this isn't working so just for a change he hits it over top of everyone instead just to mix it up....

Oh Bertos ...... why does Ricki have such blind faith in him? He has been so sh*t for so long.  He plays one very good ball every 7 or 8 games which is enough for Ricki to keep him in the team.  Daniel has been brilliant recently and I bet that when Ifill returns to the team it will be Daniel dropped and not Bertos.

Smith should have played, he has been one of our best players in recent weeks, only behind Sanchez and Daniel.

I think Smith should have been in ahead of Brown, but I don't agree with the Brown bashing, I think the demands should be for Bertos to be dropped, Brown has been decidedly average but Bertos has been far, far worse.

There you go....I have joined the angst bandwagon this week....

Atleast I have my beloved Liverpool to watch now!!!! Oh wait we are at home so will be a 0-0 draw

4-2-3-1 can be a good attacking formation, provided your wing backs get forward to create a 6 man attack. One of our problems last night was that time and time again we were left with only 4 players attacking. With their defence having 5, 6 or 7 players back covering the attacks broke down.

Our transition play from defence to attack needs to be sharper, like it was last week, the same with our transition back into defence. We were a bit slow tracking back and consequently gave them to much room in our third.

We have most of the players to do the job, they just need to ensure that they do it (although another striker wouldn't go amiss oh and a deep lying midfield playmaker as well).

As to why we don't play well away I think it is more a mind-set issue as opposed to a physical problem

Mindset and a major lack off balls on the road...
Permalink Permalink

homer simpson...your post summed it up perfectly.

Sitting at home watching the last 20+ minutes we were chasing the game and we had the three players...Sanchez, Daniel and Smith who were so outstanding on attack against the Jets....all sitting on the bench(or back in Wellington in Smiths case)

Rickie telegraphed how he was going to approach the match with his "we need to be conservative" comments. Then he left out Smith and played the muscle boys in midfield. Apart from a couple of times when we worked nice triangles in the box we reverted to Plan A. Which is whacking in loopy crosses. Rickie mate...you don't get it. It does not work.

So obsessed is Rickie with this style of play that when Pav came on Rickie shunted Sanchez out to the left wing. FFS Sanchez is the one player with the skills and ability for us to be the central playmaker. Rickie should watch a few of the Heart games...see how Van t schip uses Fred in that role.

That game was so frustrating....Adelaide are not a great team..bottom of the table, worst defense in the League, lacking in confidence. If we had turned up with our team that played the Jets and attacked them hard we could have got a win. As it was the way we played allowed them to get into the game.. Something needs to dramatically change with our away games....maybe we need to get someone like Trubiletix to come in as assistant attacking coach....or maybe its a just a mindset problem....Rickies away conservatism seeps into the whole team mentality

we must be conservative= we must play endless sh*te balls into the box that either go out, straight to the keeper, or are headed away by the first man.

We have been scoring goals moving the ball quickly, lots of player movement. Lochead impeded that today, and no Smith didn't help.

My thoughts entirely.
Heaven knows Ive been critical ernough of Pav, but it looks like he coul put it away if given some decent crosses, and I think Daniel has been putting in some excellent balls that no-ones getting on the end of. Bertos wont do it .

I hope our subbed players have some serious injuries.
Cos it makes no sense at all to me to take off Daniel, Greenacre and Sanchez when we are two down, tired as they may be.

Sigh, time for me to finally join the angst queue....

Almost completely agree with this.

Ricki! BERTOS IS RUBBISH!!

There was even a time in that game where he was put clean past his defender (Golec?) and he turned around and tried to beat him again.. and lost the ball. WTF?

He's a complete shadow of his former self.

And Brown also needs a wake up call. How much better would our midfield have been without him but with Smith instead? Much more balanced methinks.

But Smith wasn't even on the plane. Must have insulted the teachers' pets Brown and Bertos so Ricki gave him a caning and told him to go into the naughty corner.

As for the game I thought we were ok going forward to a point but we kept crossing from in front of the goal box which is very easy to defend - Lochhead was particularly guilty of this. All I can think is that it must have been an instruction from Ricki because we continually did it when there was ample opportunity to get more towards the by line before crossing back into the box at a muh more dangerous angle. So frustrating to watch.

That was so fraustrating to watch, but truth is we just don't have enough quality up front to threaten consistantly away from home.
The only player the Reds were worried about defending against was Sanchez. They hunted him in minipacks to make sure he didn't start running at them, and closed him out of it. Says it all really.

Some very odd subs made by Ricki, really no idea what he was thinking.[/QUOTE] ...

agree here...but worse..with 10 minutes to go, we  have 4 players at back marking 1 of there's..wake up Ricki, 2-0 down with 10 minutes go...a defender comes off, or push one forward

and we're stuck with this Super Coach for another 2- 4 yrs, doesn't look like he's the longest serving A-league coach at all,,

We put 5 past the Jest defence. The Reds have a worse defensive record and we scored none.

I don't think all 5 can be put down to playing home vs. away, so I can only conclude that we DO have sufficient quality upfront to do better than we did last night.

Tactics and gameplay contribute to psychology just as much as the Nix travelling hoodoo, and I do wonder if the approach to the game was responsible for at least some of the poor showing last night.

If we were a sh*t team I wouldn't be so concerned. But I know we have far more potential than the garbage last night.

Looks good, though I'm tempted to give Greenie a rest and put Ifill there somewhere when he's fit.

But what are the chances that RH will do the following to make this starting XI possible ?

1 Drop Brown to play Smith
2 Drop Bertos INSTEAD of Daniel to play Ward (Ifill)
3 Play Lia at RB to allow Muscat play DM

I say 0% to any of the 3 above...sigh...

Agree with kad9's team selection and also agree with safire that it just won't happen. I was sure that he would keep the starting line up from the Jets game and with Lochy coming back, would have given him the opportunity to put Manny back into midfield but that would have been at the expense of Brown and thats just not going to happen.

Sid, Manny and Diego return the baby to the pre-historic people, but not before Diego's old gang try and grab the kid. Diego squares up to them and beats them (with the help of Manny).

Manny also finds a luvvly female whooly heffalump who things she's a possum.

Or am I straying into Ice Age 2? Sorry.

He apparently has an uncanny knack of finding the back of the net. And with the quality of crosses that Bertos has delivering his distinct lack of height is unquestionably a competitive advantage.

What the Phoenix need more than anything IMO is a decent Asst Coach; one who knows the game and most importantly has the balls to tell Ricky Herbehate hen he is wrong (which is often) that he is wrong . . . . often this appears to be by being ultra conservative and not rolling the dice in the hope that just every now and again the team might win away from home. The fact is that Herbert's record with the Phoenix especially away from home is absolutely crap and if this country did not have its ridiculous love affair with him, he would have been sacked or moved upstairs many moons ago. I don't go along with the view that Brown and Bertos are necessarily past it, but it is blatantly obvious that all of those subbed yesterday and Smith who didn't even get on the plane would've given the team a better chance of at least a point.
The saddest thing about it all is that the team, IMO, is playing better away from home this season than ever before; hence the extreme frustration.

it seems like he has favourites and plays his favourites without giving other players a chance to prove themselves, brown and bertos have been in good form last few seasons, this season they've lacked it but he still sticks with them, when players like daniel and smith have come in and consistently performed (minus a few of daniels performances) and lia was more solid at rb anyway, musact more insturmental in the mid

The most disappointing thing for Jr and me was the pre match attitude. "you've got to be a bit cautious".
This was a sh*t Adelaide team. Bottom of the league. Just sacked their coach and sacked/dropped  their captain.
This wasn't the time to go over timidly "please sir can we have a point?".This was the time to go over and rip them a new one.

I couldn't work this one out.

Are we so fearful psychologically of our away record that we won't push for a win against bottom of the table sides who have hardly scored at home recently and haven't won since early November because before we can start winning games in Australia we have to prove that we can at least draw?

Once we have some draws under our belt on Australian soil, then we can focus on trying to get wins?
