Pointless possession football?

Generally not, but when Brisbane have all this possession they never quite seem to know what they want to do with it, hence pointless.

Okay.
Firstly and most glaringly obvious; the referee was sh*t.
I don't think Broich was tackled once without a foul called, the first goal was probably marginally offside, the cards were silly. He just didn't let the game flow, blowing his whistle at every other tackle.

Secondly tactics; I suspect the game plan was to simply to hold our ranks in the first half, keep them from scoring in the first half and get settled. Try get a sneaky on break and push in the second half

The second half was excellent, I think we we're probably the better side in the second half, we put them under immense pressure in their own half and forced them to concede throw ins all day long.

Its gutting, any other day Ifill would have buried his chances.
Again the we played some football to be proud of the in the second half and Theo was all that stood between us and the goal.
A draw would have been the fair result.
Next match thread should be fun, what to do with these suspensions?

Dead right. Ref was as bad towards us as against us, and we cant blame the ref for our dismal approach

They were better than us today, ref sh*te, paul would usually have scored at least one from his chances.

Pav though not impressed.

We were actually lucky not to concede a penalty.

Doesn't change the fact that the standard of refereeing is abysmal.

Sour grapes - we were beaten by a better team on the day (as Tim Brown said in the post-match interview). First goal looked ok at the ground - still looks ok on the replay. Most of the decisions the Phoenix got upset by - the referee got right. Team played well except perhaps Bertos - just one of those days against a class side.  They deserved their win, we need to put it behind us - we can certainly beat them on our day.

Tactics; the first half we played the same tactics that served us so well on the road the last 4 seasons (sarcasm alert) - sit back and try and strike on the counter - looked to me like we were playing for a draw. The result was the Roar got in to their rhythm and we never got the ball. Tactics made worse by chasing as individuals and not pressing as a team. Contrast that with the second half when we did press as a team and, as a result, knocked them off their game.

We play our best football when we take the game to the opposition - we just invite disaster when we sit back

Their imports are a sh*t load better than ours.

Their first goal was offside but the second was a stunner.

Leo reverted to the she-male he was the first half of the season, Lia was appalling and Durante going off at the linesman was f**king stupid.

We got what we deserved and were beaten by a better team.

With that off my chest I dearly hope we turn up next week at CCM and have a go because -
the same sit back tactics will see the same result.

Proving that two different people see two different games, I thought Leo was very good and was surprised he was subbed off, especially as he had been involved in some good attacks and had just put over a superb cross seconds earlier. Also thought Lia did a creditable job. No, he's not the attacking threat that Manny is but considering they made a point of targeting his wing he did OK.

Yeah they really had a go at him in the first 10-15 and he did alright. He can still be a rash knob though, or knob rash maybe.

A bit pissed off with Rickies tactics first half...park the bus at home. FFS we are better than that. We are deservedly second in the League and should try and play like it. It was not like we are bottom of the league trying to hold out a top team. We showed in the second half when we tried to play some football that we could put them under pressure.

I have to generate some momentum for those comments.

What the F were we doing in the first half?
Way to go when we get some results on a run, get some crowd interest, and then have a formation like that?

People want to be entertained, and Im sorry that approach in the first half was 0/10.
I almost cheered when Brisbane scored, cos I knew we would have to change.
You will not attract the casual punter playing that at home against the best side in the world - it was a truely awful approach.

I mean, if we have to have 5 across the midfied, might as well put Daniel out on the left. At least maybe he could have picked out Ifill all on his own.

Sanchez, Greenacre and Brown were a complete waste of space in the first half. And they trod on Smiths toes so much even he didnt know what was going on.

At the end of the day, we totally deserved a good defeat for that piss poor effort.

Even a 5 yr veteran season ticket holder like me aint gonna watch rubbish like that first half, that is totally unacceptable at the ROF

Agree with whitby.

Adopted the same Dunedin approach but this time we didn't nick take our chance when it came and thanks to a tough linp call we go in 1 zip down at the break. Second half we played with much more intent and probably forced as many saves as theoklitos has made in any 45 min period all season. On the other hand it meant we were more exposed at the back and in the end that cost us. Roar were the better team but frankly I thought we caused them as much trouble as we ever have and just didn't get the luck you need to get you past brisbane.

This. When we win (Dunedin) it is a tactical masterstroke, when we lose it is same old negative tactics. Don't think we were as bad as many are trying to make out. Better team still won though.aitkenmike2012-02-12 21:02:46

We could have easily won that. I feel like we had more or at least a similar amount of great chances as them.
Either way we were better than Perth and Sydney.

Yes. It's not just the Nix, it's all games. So far this season, two goals have been missed due to replays being shown.

I don't think we were terrible as everyone here is saying. Brisbane had majority of the ball in the first 40 minutes and did nothing, and from what I saw of the replay, first goal looked offside.

Second-half we were much better, but you are never going to get any flow when the ref keeps blowing this whistle for dives and theatrics.

Ifill normally would have buried his chances, credit on the saves, but I think we played way better than Brisbane in the second half.

Upside to the next game, expect Manny will be back, Lia to midfield with Smith. Just need to find cover for Dura.

I can even say what the goals were. Archie Thompson scored after a quick long throwin, and Mustafa Amini scored after Theo kicked the ball straight to him, and Amini lobbed Theo and scored off the crossbar. patrick4782012-02-12 21:18:41

This.

Noticed that a lot of supporters stayed to clap the team off (usually it's just the FZ). That doesn't tend to happen when we play cr*p.

Their second goal was a pearler.

(Still - am overall somewhat deflated today - two of my teams lost)

The only really worthwhile part of the game was when my son won the iPhone 4S in the TAB sponsored competition. Other than that, well, the referee was appalling (again!) but the Roar deserved the win.

His mother was seating beside him at that game too, so that won't work :-) I should say my son is 23 years old, so it may take more than just one shiny dollar to prise it away from him. Actually, he was stoked beyond words.Sunset Sam2012-02-12 21:34:47

Simply a game of two halves for me. First half we gave them far too much respect, and a Dura mistake allowed their big fella to score. Second half I thought we played like we are accustomed to seeing at home, and but for some good keeping from Theo we could have nicked a goal. That they caught us on the break when we had seemed to have gone to a back 3 after Siggy limped off, was testament to their quality.

Suck it up, no big deal, more points to be won home and way between now and season's end.

well......first off I thought that we gave them far too much room in the first half by standing off, I dont thnk that there was anyone in that centre circle apart from Partaluu and he certainly had plenty of ball to do with as he wanted. Vince lia looked decidedly dodgy at right back and generally due to too much respect given to the roar we were chasing shadows...picked up a bit in the centre half but maybe too late then. On another note are all linesmen as blind as the ones we had today?
