Little more info.

With the club's future guaranteed, and just a week out from the start of the new season, Herbert is hoping to have his roster complete by next Tuesday with further signings possible after that.

The Phoenix coach still needs three players to reach the required minimum of 20 ahead of their opener against Gold Coast on October 9 and has two under-21 players and a midfielder lined up.

"The ink is drying on a few contracts now," he said. "Two of them are under-21 players and one is a player who I know well."

One of the under-21 players is likely to be Brent Griffiths who has been on trial at the club and who played in the Phoenix's pre-season match against Central Coast Mariners last weekend.

2 signings will be u21, and Ricki knows one of them very well. Chettleburgh?
Or could that even mean Killen?

Also injury replacements on the cards

They've got offers out to three former European players, just needs one (or two) of them to sign on the dotted lines.  Could be great news.

I'm guessing i'm missing something here but don't we already have 4 import slots taken up? One by the all important reserve goalkeeper -  So the max we could sign would be 1 anyway?

One well credentialed attacking player (thinking Ifill - seasoned pro, maybe had a few injury issues in the past but will do well with less workload etc) and I'd certainly feel better if not confident about the coming season though.

Well it could be one good striker in the import slot, and Joel Griffiths. Now that would bolster our attacking stocks (as well as put the fear into all linesmen)

Go Ricki !!!

But hang o, it says two under 21s and a midfielder? What the?

Ok one experienced O/S midfielder and Griffiths then

Dont confuse me by posting as i am typing

And Ricki gives us 4 instead of 3 and we are all tired but happy at the end of the day

i doubt it considring article says 2x u21 and midfielder which to me indicates that the midfielder is not one of the u21 players and killen is not u21...i have a good idea who it could be and we know him well

Yeah he's pretty keen on Payne it seems. Hes a striker who can also play wide I think? Would fit into a front three quite nicely, although would get limited game time if we sign an international striker as well.

Id take Bran, Chettleburgh and Payne. Good young contingent. Bran and Cory look to have the ability to play at this level, Tim definitely has the potential, and if he was picked up there wouldnt be lots of pressure for him to play straight away, but its always nice to have a young attacker to throw in the mix if needed. They can always surprise and impress.

So this time next week we should definitely have a new striker linked to club - well at least some "movement"

Any news on Payne?

SELF BELIEF PAYS OFF FOR GRIFFITHS

Former Perth Glory defender Brent Griffiths today put pen to paper and officially became a Wellington Phoenix player.

The one-year contract the 21-year-old signed ended more than six months anguish during which he visited Adelaide United and Central Coast Mariners en route to Wellington.

To say Griffiths was delighted to join the Phoenix would be an understatement.

When [Perth coach] Ian Ferguson told me my contract wouldnt be renewed I didnt realise just what a tough time I had ahead of me, Griffiths said.

When something like that happens it is easy to start feeling you arent good enough.

That is when you need your family and friends to keep you going.

I went to Adelaide on a two-week trial and when that didnt work out the Mariners said I could train with them.

I was there 10 weeks and that training stood me in good stead when my agent Nik Mandic arranged for me to trial with the Phoenix.

It was a fantastic relief when Ricki Herbert said he wanted me to join the club because it has been a really tough time.

Six months without pay is hard, especially when I have a mortgage on an apartment back in Perth to keep up with.

I had to put off some payments and there was a time when I began to think it might be time to look for a job outside football.

Whenever I thought that way I told myself I was good enough to get back into the A-League, and in the end that self-belief has paid off.

When Griffiths took the field against the Mariners in Tauranga last Sunday he found himself facing his brother Rostyn.

The pair had been at Perth together but didnt get to play a full game together.

When he was in the team I always seemed to be injured or suspended, Griffiths said.

I didnt get much time against him Tauranga either. Now I want to get a full game against him and come out on the winning side!

Not a name I'd heard in connection with the Phoenix before.

But he played for Austrian age-group sides, but also seems to be quite injury prone.

I'm assuming Griffiths is one of our two remaining U21s ? I know we needed to sign another CB and I really hope it works out for the kid but you have to wonder after being let go by the Glory and failing to secure a contract at the Reds and CCM.

We are so short of pace, creative flair and goal scoring ability I really hope the remaining signings are a bit special.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Haha yeah sounds suss as.

Chris James for the midfielder Ricki knows well? Couldn't hurt to have another kiwi on the books considering it's not an import slot.

See he's scored 4 for his Aussie league club.

I wouldnt mind it so much if the side was full of youth and ones for the future. But we dont seem to want to do that, and would rather sign 21 y.o. australians who wont be youth players next season.

Would love some young attacking players in the side.
