  • Hmm.. lowest attendance in both previous seasons has resulted in a win, with a rare clean sheet. I'll be doing my bit and staying abroad next week too.

I think it is quite normal for the 2nd game to have less people coming, unless you are winning every game or at least playing attractive football, the number won't increase by much.

consistency is the key.  Probably it will get better when it comes to rugby etc's off season and gets warmer.

I think the count was wrong, cos there were as many there as there were for the Pwerth game.

Guilty  I wasn't there and the guy I normally go with was absent too. He was skiing and I was sick. Next home game is a goer though.

    Its no longer a problem.

No chance. I said as soon as I got in that the crowd was a bit disappointing. The fever zone was a bit busier, but the rest wasn't - there were far less people across to left, and the crowd on the right didn't stretch as far as it did via Perth.

Disagree, those of us that work weekends cannot re arrange our shifts to fit the time, where as if it was later we could....so I will not be there

Also Oceanic, It wasn't 2,446 that disappeared, was atleast 2,500 as I boosted the numbers by 4, attended my first game for this season and dragged along 3 others who have never been to a Nix game.  I think they are hooked now...

I was confused when the numbers came up on the screen... Me and the Mrs had a bet, she said 8,000, I said 10,000. It didn't look like we had dropped 2,500 people from the last home game? it looked just as full to me.

Every season there has been a drop off of about 30% in crowd numbers from the first home game to the second. For the first 2 seasons the crowd at the second home game was not too far off the end of season average home crowd - so we are looking at an average of around 8,500 - below the 10,000 break-even.

As has been said countless times already the formula for increasing crowd numbers is simple; win playing attractive football and scoring plenty of goals - that's a saleable product.

I'm sure"bad" press on away results (e.g last Sydney game) also doesn't help - we really do have to get our sh*t together on the road if we want to be play-off contenders and get respect both in Australia and, more importantly for crowds at the RoF, at home.

I know for a fact that Terry has been giving away some free tickets to junior football teams. My mates little brother played against Mr.Serepisos' son and the whole team got free tickets.

Can't really hurt to try and get the interest levels up though

Hmmm.  Addicks for Saturday games you only have n=2 observations.  Pretty unbalanced sample to draw your conclusion.

Can you show your workings and your probabiity values?

I'd suggest you undertake a multivariate analysis and gather as much data as you can (weather on the day, other events in town, OCR, balance of payments etc).  Come back in a couple of year's time when the analysis is complete and by then you'll have another two seasons of data to add in.

Here games bouncing around from Friday nights to Sunday afternoons to Saturdays to Thursdays or whatever cannot be helpful when trying to build a regular crowd, if the league could somehow stardise at least most of the kick of times we might be in with half a chance, moving it around the schedules is too much hassle for a lot of people.

Good point - while others might point to NRL, NPC, Super 14 and even the EPL (to a lesser extent) etc as successful examples of codes where games bounce around, they were well established with solid and loyal crowd bases before selling their souls to the TV companies and varying from the standard Sat/Sun afternoon kickoff times.

However, the FFA/A-league are relative latecomers, and have to establish themselves in the modern marketplace, which places them in a difficult position - limited/less exposure vs confusing the floating punters.

I'm inclined to go with other comments here - a winning team will put bums on seats, especially with an attractive style of play.wolfman2009-09-09 02:15:59

whilst the recession is going on, attending the football could be perceived as a bit of a luxury for some people when they can watch it at home, so the drop in attendances across the whole a-league are not to be unexpected.  As for the first home game having 2.5k more people? thats predictable in most competitions, plus  i think the number of complementary tickets would have been quite high for that match

Wow, never been called trendy before, especially after having a season ticket for 26 straight years for an unglamorous club like Wolves, oh to relive those decadent cool hunting Tuesday nights in downtown Grimbsy and Portsmouth in the middle of winter!

Obviously all this pales into insignificance for a heavyweight, forum loving, lanyard wearing hardcore football fan like you Fortean.

Oh by the way I got made redundant in May so we couldnt justify buying season tickets for the Phoenix this season as our cat needed a new Burberry raincoat and I wanted a Mercedes Benz convertible for summer.

A family pass costs $60.  No including the booking fee.  Another drive past the ROF and saw that the Lions game allows under 14s in for free...there maybe have to have a paying adult with them but it's still a good deal.

I haven't renewed to be honest, I could be one of the guys you are talking about but I might be going overseas to live in the near future so didn't want to make a financial commitment that wouldn't pay off. e.g. leaving empty seats for 4 or 5 games.
But in the mean time I am just paying game by game...

Guess you just have to remember some people aren't as financially fortunate or secure as some others, I don't think it's a "trend thing" or a novelty that has worn off and I don't think it makes them 'lightweights' either, just unfortunate.

It sounds simple, I suppose, but how many teams in the A-League have actually achieved that? I'd say only one so far - Melbourne a couple of seasons back. Gold Coast have started like it this season but don't get the crowds.

Every club has their 'base' amount of loyal supporters - ours seems to be about 6000 - and then a bunch of hangers on who don't go to every game etc.

Of course it (consistently win playing attractive football and scoring plenty of goals) is the ideal but I'd suggest the more you do it the bigger the crowds.

I wouldn't characterise those who don't go to every / most games as hangers on - to me they are discretionary spenders - they will spend their discretionary entertainment $s where they feel they get the best value or they will sacrifice other purchases for Nix tickets if they think there is a good chance they will see a good product.

So far this season I think we have shown, at home, that we want to go forward playing good football - the Perth game was good as was the first half of the Adelaide game.

There is great support for the Nix in / around Wellington - we just need to get on a roll - keep getting consistent results at home and get some results on the road - if we are seen as genuine play-off contenders the buzz will build, as will the crowds.

Hopefully we start upping our "road game" this Sunday.

Oh not really a rugby fan - with or without the shield.  I don't have children myself however thought it was a good idea to get more young ones along on to the games at family friendly times.  Don't know if they club have tried it or not.  $60 is a lot for a day out, you'd pay roughly the same to take a family to the movies I'm guessing.

Wgtn rugby does offer a lot of incentives and specials - probably has the cash to do so.
