Curious about where the almost 2500 fans disappeared to on Friday night.  I realise our numbers fluctuate - thanks wikipedia for the stats - but it was a clear calm Wellington evening.

was it marketing?
was it price?
was it the team?
was it a Friday night?
or other commitments...

Are there any forumies that didn't go to Friday nights game but did attend the 1st game?

Out of towners/overseas fans are excused from answering.

I thought with it being a Friday night that we'd get a really good crowd to be honest, could hardly believe it when I got in to see there were quite a few less than the first home game on a Sunday at 5pm.

Although, looking at last season's crowds, Friday's number was still at the higher end of the scale.

Still though, 2500 odd fans just disappearing is quite strange.

Interesting read. I am curious as to where a lot of the season one fans are now too. (Other than the still attending ones) I'd love to see us getting above 10k at every game.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Hate to say it but season 1 was mostly about the novelty factor.Know think you will find its all about results.Simple formula really win and they will come.

yeah and they had all those kids for the  team parade before the kick off, i guess them plus their parents would add up a bit . I think the 7600 is about all well get, the core crowd of about 5500-6000 plus a few tag alongs ,it  seems about the average from last season too from memory.I don' think it's the recession i know so many people who just don't want to make the effort to go, they talk about the phoenix a lot but don't want to get along

If you look at all three seasons, the opening game is the big one and the numbers fall off (7th and 10th games in 1st season being the exceptions).

Warm weather may have helped boost numbers last friday, a win against Seednee the week before. So we need to:

accelerate global warming and market every home game as the first of a new season (and nix win EVERY game).

We can all do our bit for the first one, I'm sure some clever PR firm can do something for the next.

the first home game they gave out free tickets to about 3 schools around wellington. which i think was about 1500 tickets. plus the winter tournament was on. to be honest i thought they'd go down without moss and smeltz in the team just because it is a generalisation out in the public that they pretty much were the team

I think people do give a lot of weight to hearing about the away losses, which puts them off coming to the home games, where the Phoenix generally do quite well - unbeaten in the last 8 home matches.

So the key to getting more people along on a regular basis - WIN AWAY GAMES.

If the Phoenix can win against Melbourne, considering we need to anyway to get out of the doldrums on the table, then the numbers will improve for the following few home games.

Also, would be good to score more goals, people like watching goals being scored.

next home game Fowler will be here so I reckon that'll be a novelty in itself, predicting a 10500 crowd against fury.

Next crowd depends mainly on the result against Melbourne.

I agree. The more games we win, the more bums will fill the ring of fire. But in saying that:

GCU v Sydney @ Skilled Park, Robina = Crowd: 6406

NQR v Brisbane @ Dairy Farmer Stadium = Crowd: 7,173

So the cake tin is still doing ok with crowd figures

The drp from 10,000 to 7,500 was dispointing, especially when people were wanting more friday night games.

The crowds around all the grounds are around 7,000 so it's not just us.
Would be great if we could have 10,000 going to each home game.
Better distribute more posters for V Fury!!

yes and no. I mean sure if we blast melbourne away we'll get a sh*t load of supporters anyway, but Fowler being here isn't a normal A-league game, there will be a lot of people who will be coming purely on the fact that he will be there.

Our crowds aren't looking so bad now with GC, NQ, Newcastle, Brisbane, CCM, Perth all getting pretty low crowds. Melbourne's has dropped too and Sydney's are still disappointing considering their population. Adelaide have been the only ones who have done well crowd wise.

did they count the kids in the parade before the first game? 20 teams + their parents!!!

Fridays are less family friendly I suspect..irrespective of whether Saturday sport is on or not the logistics of getting people in after work or meeting up with a or one working parent in town can be hard. My son was working so -1.  Interesting as I mused about all the people on the trains as I walked past at 7ish.

Winning is definitely the main way of drawing a crowd, but two possible explainations for the drop last week are:

-crowd numbers at the stadium can sometimes be wildly inaccurate (surprising in that they usually use the automatic ticket gates).
-corporate numbers at westpac can fluctuate around a 1000 people depending on the day of the week and time of the year (and seen as you cant tell if the boxes and lounges are full it often looks like there are just as many people at the game).

People used to whinge about Sunday afternoon not being family friendly, now we have people saying Fridays aren't. Pure fact is we aren't winning. Win and they will come.

In sayin that I'm hoping they tap the Robbie Fowler factor for the Fury game. I seem to remember the Knights getting a decent turnout when Dwight Yorke came to town

Bed, is possibly the answer.

And yes, football mums are more likely to bring the young pups if we are winning (or possibly just scoring goals, so there is still hope)

Unless there is a misprint on my season ticket, the next game is a 3.00p.m. Sunday kick off.  This really is the most crowd friendly time available imho.  Fingers crossed for good weather and an excellent performance.  I think we place far too much emphasis on away performances.  If we continue to entertain and win at home, the more casual supporter will keep coming.

Its Sunday 3pm...BUT, the All Blacks play Australia the night before at the ROF so this could have a detrimental effect I think.

Actually when I drove past the ROF today, saw they'd taken down most of the phoenix flags and replaced them with the Homeshow ones.

In the Railway station saw that New World had already replaced the Friday game poster with the upcoming Fury game poster, they don't muck around!

Hopefully they keep that up - I remember last season they stalled for a while and old posters were around for ages after games.

I think we could use the All Blacks game, will be thousands of sports fans in town. Maybe we could convince a few of them to do the Stadium double header

The group that I  have attended with for the last 2 seasons didn't get season tickets this time. we all play/ coach  and have kids playing but when it was time to sign up the fire had died and I put this down to last season, it was a hard watch for most of the time. The main reason being the style the team played, seemed to be lacking direction in the last third of the field and most people want to see goalmouth action, not a midfield battle.
That's probably about 15 people down.
Friday nights game is the first game I have missed without good reason, I will go to most, they need to play more like the first half on Friday but take their chances.

Home Attendance
Season 1

Season 2

Season 3
  • 1st home match: 10,024 v Perth Glory on August 16, 2009    W 2-1
  • 2nd home match: 7,578 v Adelaide United on September 4, 2009   D 1-1

Spot a pattern here?
Around 3000 casual people who only go for the first match - looks like we dropped less than last season.

Having game kick off times bouncing around all over the place never helps, even back in the UK some game times are more friendly to supporters, ie 3pm on a Saturday afternoon, changing that often see's a change in crowd sizes.

Here games bouncing around from Friday nights to Sunday afternoons to Saturdays to Thursdays or whatever cannot be helpful when trying to build a regular crowd, if the league could somehow stardise at least most of the kick of times we might be in with half a chance, moving it around the schedules is too much hassle for a lot of people I suspect so they will pick and choose which games they can go to.

Not playing to our best attacking potential doesn't help either, if we were consistantly playing a good brand of attacking football I would hope we could up the crowd numbers.

The schedule is guided by TV requirements in Aus and the fact that most A-League clubs do not have first call on their stadiums so have to fit the other sports played there.  Particularly with Union and League both in full flight.

I know, was just commenting that bouncing the football around every day and time of the week/weekend doesn't make it easy to build up a regular support.

Yeah, having home games on the same day more often than not helps - i.e. in the case of people who work weekends - at least they could say they'll need a few Sundays off or whatever instead of some Friday nights, some Saturday nights, and some Sunday afternoons / evenings etc.

But, seems impossible for the A-League with different sports at most stadiums, every game being shown live etc etc.

Well, I'm on record as saying that this season's schedule is more family friendly (at least this family).  The Sunday games are better timed to avoid too much of a late night before school.  There are a couple of Friday nights but unless you were unlucky (?) enough to still be playing football (e.g. up Kapiti way) or play cricket later (in Dec) that's not so bad.

The marginal calls will be for the Wed games and the ChCh game.
