Why did Ricki sign Christie?

Three for me, and two for them.

He's sh*t. I mean if you played one match with Christie in the midfield and another with 10 men you'd find it hard to spot the difference.

I'm all for signing kiwis, but not rubbish ones!!!

Three for me, and two for them.

Yeah his not the best. Just average in this league and will end up being backup to the first team. I think Ricki will develop him into a better player than he currently is though.

Herbert's approach is right, sign players from the A-league.  Although he is not an excellent player, but at least he's from the A-league and knows what it requires, I still think he has the potential especially work under Herbert to become a good team player, provide depth on the bench.

waste of a spot.
tim brown is already going to struggle to get into a 1st 11 with all the midfielders...as will ferrante and lia. johnson and aloisi would be great together in the middle. while on the wings you have daniel and another attack minded winger (lia or ferrante) but no brown or christie because theyre both in the same mould as aloisi and johnson. if we play 3-4-1-2 that puts campos behind the strikers and all your midfield slots are filled up. christie doesnt deserve game time anyway, but i hope he proves me wrong.

next thing you know, it'll be webster.........then we will have to convert midfielders to defenders.

I don't know if I have the same opinion Buffy, Christie didn't have a great season last year however I think that Riki can get more out of him than has been managed of late. I agree though that the A-League seems awash with midfielders whilst quality defenders are thin on the ground.

Yeah i dont think he would be near starting. He is about 7th choice midfielder behind Aloisi, Campos. Daniel, Lia, Brown and Ferrante, he will be seemingly lucky to make the bench at this point. The team is shaping up good but out of the defenders we have signed only lochhead and dodd look like starters. We need two more quality defenders and at least one more quality striker, and by quality i dont mean jeremy brockie. But the team looks alot more proven and has more depth than the knights ever had.

I do not agree with this but Ricki has come out and said he will be played as a fullback so looks like right back, as Lochead will be left back.

Christie will be playing defence Not midfeild.

Ricki has a large squad to fill and even if Christie isn't a starter I would rather that place went to a kiwi than an Aussie. Especially when Christie has A-League experience already.

With Ricki at the helm I am confident that Christie and the other young kiwi lads will get enough minutes on the field needed to develop their game.

Good signing.

He played a bit of Right Back at Perth - one of the reasons they signed was his ability to cover that position.

Plus - thinking about it - playing and training with Ross could help him develop into the defensive midfielder he wants to be and Ross at 34 may not start every game.

He might be an OK squad player, able to cover in the middle or at the back. He wouldn't have been a choice of mine tho'.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

He's a pretty ordinary midfielder Sid, but he is combative and has played in the A League, as has 90 per cent of the squad. I guess he is back up midfielder, but I guess he could develop into a defender, although he will have to hold back on the aggression. It's no point being a Vinnie Jones if you are going to give away free kicks all day and end up with yellow cards.
He's there because he is a Kiwi. Don't expect him to start, but it brings the Kiwi quota up, and let's face it, there aren't that many of the right ilk to play in this league, as we know so well having stood on the sidelines of both ACFC and the Knights over the past few seasons.

Let's be honest Dai, wtaching the Knights never told you if many NZ players were up to it...

He must have outsprinted a water buffalo to prove his speed....yep, not my favourite. I'm not really into mediocrity and that is what you will get with Christie. Solid, do things on an average basis but sadly missing a things in the skill/fare department. I'd have preferred Ben Sigmund myself. Hard News will be pleased to have Plodder in the side:-p

He will get sent off more times than he scores. What does that say about a midfielder?

Yeah Dave, but I was there for the last season of the Kingz and that was a pretty good indication.

Yeah, but I'd still rather him than Vlahos, Richter, Harnwell and a hundred others I could name.

Forza Plodder !  Might even get Plodder on the back of my Phoenix shirt instead of the traditional...

I'd rather Ronald McDonald. Of all the players in the country here's the only one that can make me fall asleep in the stands. He really is ORDINARY.
Still, ordinary can be nice....I dunno, he just fails to get me hard, yunno what I mean. I'm not excited, my imagination not stretched by the signing....
Hell, he can go out and prove me wrong and I'll be the first to launch into the biggest beat-up on how good he is on this forum.

Let's face it, the best Kiwis go overseas. to USA College if they haven't European passports, or to Europe if they have.

I've seen some players I thought had some talent, Jason Rowley, Allan Pearce, Craig Wylie, Lance Eeson, Michael White even Brockie, come through the Kingz/Knights.

You could probably add Jeff Campell, James Pritchard, Stephen Turner on to that.

None of them set the world alight in the NSL and hand on heart, you know they would struggle in the A League.

Those guys are still some of the best players in the NZFC. I certainly can't think of any that are better, bar young Barbarouses - I really rate him.

I watch a lot of the A League, rarely miss a Friday night game, and the Sunday one, so I think I have a pretty good handle on the players, and there certainly aren't any players like young Aussies such as Nicky Carle, Kristian Sarkies or Bruce Djite, who are the sort of players that the Phoenix now need to lift the club into playoff contention.

Djite is the Australian Brockie... look's different and couldn't finish a cheese sandwich.

It needs some examination as to how this happens though.  As we were discussing the other day, we turned over the domestic Aus U-20 side in a series, using mostly our domestic U-20 players.  How can they move on to Nurnberg and the A-League while ours aren't good enough for a squad spot and in some cases can't make the NZFC every week ?

Ian Robinson would be better than Campbell, Pritch and Turner, also Rowley, Wylie and Eeason.
Robbo is the the kind of player that makes things happen and he's not scared to have a go. He also scores a few goals. I hope he has at least been approached. I just wish it was Ina Robinson's name that was the latest signing and not Plodder.

Christie might be crap but he's got 2 years of it and will give us the chance to make up some decent chants.

I must admit I did like the look of Robinson when I saw him, but I really haven't seen enough of him. But he ain't a Nicky Carle or Sarkies which are the calibre we need to be looking for now that we have the basis of a squad.
What is needed are some real class players.
I thought you were a bit harsh on Djite, HN, he's only young and has some real pace and skill, and he's not the lone ranger when it comes to finishing, it is the real Achille's heel of the A League.

That's low, HN.

Guess we'll just have to disagree on that one.

Its all part of being a fan isn't it. Some of us like this player, others hate that player. We wouldn't have this forum to debate the issues if we all liked the same players:-p For me I have watched Christie play from the U17's in 1999 and he has never impressed me in any game I saw him play since. I just saw him as average and that is all. Nothing wrong with being average but I like a little more than that in my football....which is strange considering the teams I support are fcuking useless at present.

Now Burns, he's class.  As long as Skeletor (Vidmar) realises he's not winger and plays him as a forward with Agostino... assuming Ago isn't permanently injured.

At midfield Christie would be pretty average it is obvious. He might do a job, but not offer anything special. We have enough of those players.

But as a right back or defensive player. It s a different story. He could be moulded perfectly for defence. That is where we don't need any fancy foot work. We just need consistent and solid defenders who perform week in week out. Maybe Ricki has got this one right. Maybe Christie is happy with his new role. Realising it might take him further.

If he is lacking a bit of pace, as someone mentioned...that would concern me a bit though.

If we build it, they will come...

Yeah Burns is class, but you'd agree that that is the type of player we need. We don't need any more squaddies. We need some match winning playmakers or strikers.
We have two more import spots to go, and we are still a couple of class centre backs missing for mine.
