I do know what you mean, the Scots and Welsh don't count.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland it says. So Ireland is mentioned but not England.

Mogg and Ott back to the youth team?

I'd say US College system more likely, or try for some gig in Scandinavia. Mogg's 21 & Ott 20. They have just had virtually a full season in Australia, training as a  pro day in day out, but seems Talay & Co decided they unfortunately didn't make the grade. Pro football can be brutal.

Doubt they really have a future at the Nix. For some relevance Waine is 20, Sutton 20, Van Hattum 20, Old 19, Paulsen 19 & Surman 18.

And don't think club need to sign any more Weenix players for next season. Wouldn't surprise to see them sign some older guys with ALM experience released by other clubs. Or the odd NZ domestic/NPL player offered a trial.

I thought the rule was you couldn't go play in a US college after signing a professional contract?

Yeah I think you are right. Though from memory is someone in the US College system now, who dabbled in pro football??  Ronan Wynne who had a few games in the Danish 3rd tier, but is now back in the College system I think??

Mogg didn't play a minute in the ALM, though I think he played at least one FFA Cup game??
Ott got 24 mins over 2 ALM games.

Mogg was born in the UK, so that should help him get to Europe if that interested him at all.

I believe having a paid contract during your playing career renders you ineligible for NCAA sport. I remember Steven Adams played for Wellington Saints for free in 2011/12 before heading to Pittsburgh, and more recently Taine Murray played for Auckland Huskies for free before heading to the Breakers as a development player, then the University of Virginia.

Easy to imagine Wynne forgoing salary in Denmark with the idea of heading back to college (or at least receiving per-game bonuses - not sure how the NCAA views those). Not sure Mogg and Ott did the same

I don't know, he couldn't get on the park for a pretty shark Sydney team. Maybe as a squad player, definitely not as a starter - unless Ufuk can work some magic.

Well, and not having much of a (bull)dog in the fight being only shades of British by descent (came down by parachute), England was long ago used kind of generically to refer to all of the island next to Ireland or the vague sort of country there…
but I think it’s also possible that Ryan has been listening at the keyhole of number 10 and Boris is preparing to secede from the union such as it is…

Maan  the off season can’t be that long right? We’ve had a good bit of rumour today.

Just finished reading Billy Connolly’s autobiography. That was interesting though not hugely surprising in his usual reassuring way.

He starts with a higher skill level than Sotirio. He just has injury issues.

He's rated higher than Sotirio on FIFA22.

He (Buhagiar) was going out with his current gf when she was 17... (he's 24 maybe 23 at the time) so idk if he fits with the no dickhead policy.

More upside than Sotorio. I think Sotorio has improved massively as a player, but I am unsure how much more room to grow he has. He will never have the greatest touch or pass.

Would be a very good signing. Don't know why Sydney dropped him.

I literally saw it listed on transfer market that he's English and New Zealand and I wrote passport after the word instead of nationality, yes I should have said British but it was not a political statement.

Yep, but Sotirio was a two year project. We only have one year left on Ufuk's contract as it stands so it would be good to get players who can fire straight away. Sydney fans don't seem upset that he's going. But, if we sign him, I trust Ufuk and Gill to make the right call.

Interesting that Rollo mentions Dan Morgan at age 31 as a possibility. Certainly a change from signing Weenix youngsters.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/a-league/128725745/wellington-phoenix-squad-who-is-staying-who-is-leaving-and-where-to-strengthen

Joey Champness is a free agent after his early exit from Turkish club Giresunspor but is keen to stay in Europe.

Left-back
Contracted: Sam Sutton (2024-25)
Leaving: James McGarry
What they need: With McGarry leaving the Phoenix need to find a backup for Sutton, who is quickly developing into one of the best left-backs in the A-League Men.

What Kiwis are available?: Former Auckland City player Dan Morgan is playing second-tier football in Australia after leaving Maritzburg United in South Africa and at 31 would offer some experience as well.

I would also make the case that Sandoval might not be gone for good. With such a long off season, who knows if he might play some games for his parent club, or be loaned out for 3-4 months somewhere else before returning (if we want him and he + his club are keen that is).
He was no Davila, that's for sure. But he was a good player, I wouldn't hate to see him back especially if he could have a whole season in an AMF position.
Chances are he is gone for good... But who knows

Yep, the issue would be that he's likely earning more from Chivas than we'd pay him, and he's also contracted for next year so Chivas might be motivated to sell him rather than loan him out again. He's probably not worth paying a transfer fee for us.

Yeah why contribute to guy's salary over the world's longest off season, when he'd probably be in Mexico until about 6 weeks before the season kicks off anyway.

In the meanwhile, Talay & Gill can see who else is out there in the big wide football world. But if come early September say, neither of the 2 parties found a better alternative, have another chat.

I don’t think any players in Phoenix history have been a Davila.
Roy and Ifill weren’t. Singh wasn’t. Burns and Smeltzy weren’t. Even McGlinchey, Roly Bonevacia and Tim Brown weren’t…
Sure it would be great if we could sign the best player in the club’s history. But I don’t think we should keep comparing every player to him, particularly Sandoval.
Anyone checked with Uli if he’s happy at MacArthur btw? Could’ve won the league with us…

How long is Davila contracted to Macarthur for? That podcast he did recently he talked a lot about how much he enjoyed his time in NZ - I wonder if it would be possible to attract him back after all the struggles Macarthur have had.

Edit: Google says he's contracted until  2025.

Guadalajara (including Sandoval) has 24 players out on loan. Surely they can't be paying big wages to all of these players.

Domey mentioned alot of the decision to move to Sydney, was 'family reasons'. ie his wife preferred Sydney to Wellington. Not so surprising. It's always the British background guys that tend to settle best in small NZ, with it's more similar culture.

But yes I'm sure the higher wages were also an attraction. As with any job switch.

Who knows Dwight Yorke may be a master coach, and all Uli's on field problems are gone. Wouldn't put money on it, but better odds than Mrs Davila having a sudden change of heart on Welly, or liking her hubby taking a $300K/year pay drop or whatever.

Except Davilla has said in multiple interviews that they loved Wellington and wanted to stay. I'm sure it's a little bit of one thing and a little bit of the other, and perhaps the fact that the border closing meant that Davilla couldn't be with her for the birth of their child soured her on the place. The biggest factors is the reportedly 750,000 a year that he's getting at Macarthur with a 4 year contract, at his age.

I didn't realise that those statistics showed you how well either of them dribbled, or how many good chances they had/squandered, failed to even hit... or missed due to being off side because they can't read a line.

Heres a stat that works - looking a 1 stat in isolation means nothing.

The reason I included the goals and minutes played stat was to point out he had a very similar season to Sotirio & yet hardly stood out for Sydney.

As a finisher, he is far more clinical. I have more concerns about his fitness than his footballing abilities.

Disappointing he's not moving overseas but I can understand some of the incentives he may be getting a higher pay rise, staying in Australia closer to family, a more suited playstyle to what he wants and if he's joining Newcastle his good mate Sotirio is there. Not surprised though I don't think many were expecting him to stay tbh

Oh well, can't say you didn't see it coming. The positive is that the salary cap's been freed up significantly with 8 players leaving including Reno and Hooper. Time to re-invest in the squad and bring in some quality imports.

That comment must be one of the strangest ones I’ve ever read. Are you saying he’s not a dick because he’s been going out with her for a while or he hooked up with her when she was 17 and he was 23?

Irrespective what happens if she the equivalent of a dick?

Didn't word it properly so sorry for the confusion, I had just heard during this season that he had been going out with his gf when she was still in high school (so 17) and he would've been 23 at the time. Therefore I was questioning whether he fits the no dickhead policy Talay has mentioned before.  imo I wouldn't be friends with a guy that would date a high schooler being 5+ years out of it.

I was gonna reply by saying she could have been 18 while at highschool as about a third of year 13's are, but then realised it doesn't matter because to quote you verbatim, it is something you "heard". You can't just write off a guy because of some spurious claim that you can't back up. Anyway, back to transfer speculation
