Bonnie Jansen on the 'Football Fever' Podcast she does with Piney said this week that she was talking to one of the Nix staff/mgmt and they were looking at adding a stand or two to Jerry Collins for next season having the Men play there, not sure how much truth is in that, but Piney repeated it later on too.

May well be the better option giving crowd numbers, would mean more travel for the Wellington City based fans but the cost of the stadium openign for 8k fans is silly. What is JC stadium's capacity is 1900, so you'd need to get it up to 10k minimum to cope with the men's games (which is more than a stand or two).

They built a 9k stadium at Hutt Rec when the team was playing great football and was top of the table and couldn't sell it out.

Was it two games we played there or three? Either way I do remember they got over 8k a few times which is perfectly respectable for Wellington.

Red blocks are additional toilets, add some food trucks behind the northern and eastern stands and you're golden. Just gotta sus transport but wouldn't be too hard.

It was three, one game was 9ish k, the next was 8ish, the final was 7ish k.

They got more than 10k at Wellington stadium the game before those three. So, although the atmosphere was great and the team was playing exciting football and topping the table, they never sold out the makeshift stadium. The crowds started down and dropped as the novelty wore off. I wouldn't underestimate the hit to crowds that taking the team out of Wellington would do.

How would they get around the massive light posts in the middle of the field?
Take them down and move them to the corners??

And you can blame that on the pure GREED of the Stadium Trust. I'm hearing the RFU get to rent it cheaper than the Nix, but even the Lions have had enough.

I think you will find that the shark weather at the time had a lot to do with that. The Temp stands were offering no protection from the driving wind and rain. Not the clubs fault.

You wonder if this is serious or a negotiation tactic.

But a sell out of 8k every time would allow some prices to go up. It would also shut out casual fans, but perhaps exclusivity might make it desirable. I think 8k is the standard fan base and 12K is the fan base without distractions such as birthdays, weddings, other sport etc etc.

Is there room at Porirua to put on a bigger family experience? I always thought NZ parks were amazing, but after a little travel I’m not so sure. Here I go to the football in around a 20k stadium, situated in what is already a great park for the kids full of playgrounds and gardens, with a match day experience with bouncy castles plus interesting stuff.

One time we played blind soccer. One time there was a massive dancing dinosaur circle for the kids. There’s always a few football target practice etc games. Last time was a bunch of different household items destroyed a bit that you could bang or shake to get different tunes. And a maze of sorts. And a mini obstacle course.

Oh- plus food trucks and beer trucks etc. And a bit of queuing. Seems to be a thing adult people like!

I mean maybe it’s too much, and certainly overshadows the football so far for the kids! I’ve never seen it anywhere in NZ. But also I don’t have to work hard to convince them to go. It’s a big day out. On the other hand, it is the big game in town and I’d imagine hoovers up a lot of minor sponsors who make it possible.

Not sure what the relevance of the story is, but it is a completely different way to do public sport to the kind of idea of Ben and Biff lads who dominate our ideal of a sports fan/sporting public.

I reckon they'd leave the light posts and just make 3 temporary stands down the other sideline so they just leave a small gap for the existing lights - would be a much cheaper alternative than moving them and it doesn't really make any difference to have small gaps between the temp stands.

Also I think Porirua Park with extra stands would be great atmosphere wise, could really feel like a lower league ground in Europe and it would be nice being so close in compared to Sky stadium - Just depends on transport options for getting there etc as to how many would show up I suppose.

I wonder if the mens league have higher standard for lighting, TV etc. I've noticed that at several womens games the TV covereage is not as good as the mens converage, camera angle, number of cameras etc, no VAR. Do the facilities at JC meet the men's league requriements? If not how much money is gonna be needed to meet/exceed the standard. Adding a stand or three isnt going to be cheap! I'd imagine the club would be targetting capacity of 12-15k with the aims of meeting 8-10k each home game and improving that over time. That is not gonna be cheap!

So are we signing a P Park for next season? Or should this talk go here? https://yellowfever.co.nz/categories/wellington-phoenix-discussion/topics/alternative-wellington-stadium

Let's move it - I came to this thread (squad) expecting to read numerous new posts that we have signed an injury replacement for Zawada... etc

I have watched a couple of the women's games at Porirua this season.  If you take your car, nightmare trying to get a park. Basically, it is one street to park on.  Times that crowd by four to six times for a men's game?  Heaven knows how that would work.

There’s a small car park out front and a medium member’s car park out back. Also multiple residential streets surrounding.

Plus there’s the train and shuttle busses. You could even park at the train station or Porirua central and get the shuttle bus up.

Sooooo many places have fewer parking options for much bigger stadiums and manage fine.

Untill I discovered the members parking I found it a real pain in the ass, and that member parking filled up fast.

If they built a new stand hopefully they would add parking.

If Zawada and his family ever needed a good reason to stay at the club, Last weekends game was it. As soon as someone spotted him on the Landing, his theme tune kicked off and didn't give up for 5 minutes. They know the love and respect held towards them by fans.

and with Wellington's weather - even in the warmer months we need coverage from the rain on the other three stands.

My brother in christ if they're putting together a stadium in Porirua for next season it will obviously be prefab.

Just thinking about Ugarkovic's comments from when he signed; he specifically wanted to work with Talay as a part of his Phoenix project.

Do you think there'll be any big(ish) names coming off contract who feel the same way about Chief? Exciting times to think about our upcoming recruitment possibilities.

Can't go anywhere if you are never fit enough to play.

He, like many others at the Jets, is probably looking to secure his somewhat insecure looking playing future...

Whilst I don't wish any negativity towards him, I personally think we've moved on as a club in terms of structure and direction. As others have also alluded to, the guy spends an awful lot of time on the sideline. I don't think we'll be looking to take him back any time soon.

Which makes him cheap, and we have some of the best facilities in the comp - personally I'd take talent if it's available even if they're a little brittle, provided we don't hinge our hopes on him! He has an x-factor

If he is 'cheap', everyone would be chasing him & that drives up the price. Wouldn't be shocked if he ends up joining Uffie at Sydney tbh.

Who are we thinking... has to be either Kosta or Kraev. I don't think they'd be looking to renew Zawada just yet, wait and see what interest there is for him and how he recovers as well. Pennington, Duncan and Salas are the others off-contract this season

Could be Surman. Only one year left on his deal iirc, if he isn't keen to make an overseas move this offseason it makes a lot of sense for both parties for a new contract to be signed. A salary more reflective of his worth to the team for the player, and a better chance for the club to get a transfer fee when he does make his move.
