My understanding is that we would be able to sign WU players after deadline as they would be considered free agents. That understanding could be wrong though

Yeah that is the case. However pretty much all the quality players have been picked up already. Ibusuki & Garuccio are the only two not linked with moves already.

If we weren't already signing Edwards, I would have liked Garuccio.

Happy enough with that signing - an actual LB/LWB, so now we dont have to shoehorn someone into that role, and provides competition for LKH and to a lesser extent Tze-Xuan Loke (who has been playing LB for the WeeNix, but playing on the right in the Australia Cup games).

Some will shirk at him coming out of the NPL, but he's been an everpresent in any team he's been in over there, and does come in from one of the stronger setups. That and we dont have to look far at just how dogged, determined and sprinkled with a bit of quality those NPL sides can be.

Does Edwards also have an Aussie passport?

The announcement says he was in Aussie for 5 years, so it would've been smart idea for him to have got it but it doesn't say whether he has or not.

Would have been the smart move to apply as soon as he had lived in Auusie for 4 years, the threshold these days to appy.

He has a passport with a Kangaroo on the cover, and he only ends up at the Nix for one season, well at least he could sign as a local for all the other 11 ALM clubs. WU if they can resurrect themselves will need to build a squad from scratch again next year.

Man the level of our signings vs this...

He only ever played for Real Madrid B and his La Liga experience was one for Espanyol where he scored 0 league goals and got relegated. Has battled away in the second division since. He's got a better CV than our signings, but Sydney are making the most of it.

5 goals in 39 games (1023 mins) in Spain's second tier last season, where he has spent most of his career.

And by Real Madrid, they mean Real Madrid B.

Not as glamorous a signing as it looks at first.

Yeah, We can play that game too. Ex Man Utd Wootton, ex Chelsea Davila, ex Man City Ball - doesn't really mean much unless they actually got a decent number of minutes for a big club

even if it isnt the final squad, and we are to get somebody else, who could we feasibly bring in that would move the needle at this point? This is a weak squad and I am going to be so impressed if Chiefy can get us into the top 6 with it

Even more than the squad assembled, a major concern is that Chiefly obviously plans to roll out 3 CBs with wingbacks.

No real Rojas or Chico replacement. When either of those guys played last season the football threatened to be half decent. But without them or any quality attacking AM, it was dross. Often yes with that back 3/5 setup.

So Chiefy has to have a plan for that setup to be far more attacking this season. Will be some pressure on Payne and Edwards/LKH to provide an attacking edge. The fans and importantly the owners very quickly won't tolerate a repeat of 24/25.

Had to say that for the comedy, but as Coochie said, no Marco or Chico, though perhaps Harpo…

We hopefully will have Rufer for most of the season, and a better performance from Nakamura, Payne and Ishige. But we’ve lost Kosta and that’s pressure on Eze and Armiento to replace his numbers and better them.

Its not the end of the world if we go into this season with this squad.
There are plenty of examples of star less teams doing ok. We have seen in the Oz cup where teams like Hiedelburg repeatedly beat higher ranked teams.
The key to being succesful, as we saw with the Burgers is that you have a very astute coach who can formulate a tactical style that complements the players you have at your disposal.
If your team is well drilled, and everyone understands their role then you can trouble many sides without needing top end players.
Over to you....Chiefy

Just got sent this a bit earlier, and I think she's on here too. But the gist of what was said - It look like we've registered Ramy Najjarine.

While others may differ, I would call Ramy "a useful squaddie" for the Nix.
He spent no more than 2-3 years with any of the ALM clubs he played at, doing rounds between WSW, MCity, Jets (on loan) and WU.
While he never set the world on fire with his performance, he should offer us decent support in the midfield, possibly on the wing, if we do sign him up.  He is a free agent and does not need a visa.  I am not aware of any significant history of injuries.   On the downside, he is not what you might call a regular goalscorer, let alone a prolific goalscorer.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Essentially just a worse version of a Colakovski signing. He’s not bad though and imo would be an improvement on Armiento and Mileusnic.

They would have doled out several more for the OPL squad, but yeah. 😅

Somewhat disappointed and underwhelmed, as others have pointed out no real 10 to spark things.
Hopefully I am made to eat my words, but a part of me wonders if this is just a “it will do” squad to see chief and his imports out so a new coach next season has a shot at assembling his own team.

I think we've put together a very poor squad, to be honest.

Lots of dead weight from other clubs, pretty underwhelming imports too.

Any time we sign these 'depth signings', they play sharke and offer nothing. I'd rather give a kid a go.

Extremely disappointed that we did not replace Rojas/Chico - as somone else said,  that was the only time we looked half decent last season, and now we don't even have  that (or Kosta)!

It will take a miracle for us to do anything

Regardless of how this season pans out, we're destined for another HUGE churn of players at the end of the season, with all our arrivals on one-year deals and several players (plus the coach) on the last year of their existing deals.

I assume the ones who perform will be snapped up by other clubs, and the ones who don't... won't.

Either way, not holding out much hope for a cohesive season at this point.

Underwhelming signings - gives me little hope for this season.

If Chiefy has a good year I will eat my words gladly. He's playing for his job effectively, and if he's good enough to keep it with this squad, then fair play.

I hope we get Mata. I think he would add a little to our team, especially if we are playing wing backs as he will provide a target for crosses. Him and EZE up top. To big units to put themselves about.

Not sure if we will have an improvement from last years imports. From what i have seen in preseason it is much the same, they just dont impose themselves.

Well this season, there hasn't really been much turnover at all from last.
3 of the imports retained. No young players sold. Same head coach. I'm gonna guess the Nix are one of the clubs with the least amount of movement.

If there is a big cleanout next season, incl a new coach that may not be a bad thing. No U20 WC or Olympics that drags away a large chunk of young players in pre season.

Likely only Payne & Rufer away at the World Cup. And off contract Roofs may leave anyway. LBS could also be in Nth America, but if he is yes good enough to be there then he's likely being sold to a European club before his contract expires in 2027.

Winter 2026 will be the best sort of undisrupted off season you can hope for re big changes, and bedding in a new regime, if yes Chiefy leaves and it's a new head gaffer.
