I mean if we have a coach who is so regimented and rigid in his tactics that he will never use wingers then he should never have been hired.

I don’t however believe that the coach is that dumb.

Yes, Nathan Walker will definitely be used more than before. & they will want at least 1 more player that can be wide attacking midfielder or winger. Substitutes of course. I imagine 1 would be put on at a time, and that central attacking midfield Bryce Duke would be full match unless exhausted/injured.

Greenacre will use players that are wingers but they just have to able to play a bit more centrally.
If LBS was still here he'd play in one of the 10 roles and he's a winger. So I don't think Greenie is against signing a winger as long as they can fit into the tactical role of the wide 10's.

Ah ok. So what's the likely formation? Four at the back, two DMs, two CAMs and two 9s?

That's Greenys most favoured formation but he can switch it around.

Not so sure its a case of not using wingers get the impression he likes players to able to move into another role if required. Have seen Walker used outside then also come in and play centrally

He seems to like versatile players that can play in the tight spaces but are also comfortable operating in space.  When he coached the reserves he use to get a of width from his fullbacks but if he does the same with 1st team remains to be seen.

Also with 2 nines one can push wide and one of the 10's push forward.  He may have the team set up on 4-2-2-2 but they can move about to create pssign channels both through the middle and wide.

Although after this trip to Australia the focus may be on organizing the defence.

Yes theprof, and one of these would be younger than Kazuki Nagasawa at 34 he will probably be substituted off regularly. An attacking midfielder substitute that can run the ball straight at tiring defences, someone that could be between central and wide. If they got 1 more striker and not 2 attacking midfielders, then maybe a tall target for crosses. Definitely substitute  attacking midfield is priority.
You mean like a Gillion or an Isa Prins? Apart from Walker it appears we lack pace and penetration out wide. If you use overlapping fullbacks you can get width. We have McGarry who can do that on the left. Sheridan on the right has a big engine but he still needs to work on his crossing and creativity when he gets forward. We will miss Payne in that regard. I agree we need another fast attacking mid. Especially as Walker has had some injury issues in the past

The other thing to remember is that Payne might potentially be a step up on Sheridan full stop. Sheridan works hard, don’t get me wrong.

But Payne is a bit bigger, stronger and has a wealth of playing experience. All over the park. Including for the AWs against Bellamy and Giggs. If he and Rufs came through the academy now they’d get contracts overseas with playing minutes.

To put it another way- if Payne fails to put in a good delivery that’s memorable and if Sheridan, as of this season, puts in a dangerous attacking ball, that’s memorable.

We were looking strong with Payne and LBS.

It’s going to be a tough few fixtures without them tbh, and with our late arrivals in Duke and Anderson.

Luke Mitchell has been featuring pretty prominently in pre season so far, and is seemingly getting a decent run within the squad including in the past two games over in Aussie v WSW & CCM. An out and out #8 so he may well find himself in consideration for at least a spot on the bench come the season proper.

Slightly different positions mind (8 v 6) but I've heard more about him in these past few months than I've heard regarding Fin Roa Conchie.

Ben Trenberth another in strong consideration - plays as an #8 but seems to pop up all over the show from what I've seen of him in ressies and for the NZ U16's/17's. He gets involved and likes to get on the ball as well as take on his man, sometimes to his detriment.

Obviously as a 16 year old he's got a lot to learn to polish his game and elevate it to the next level, but all the tools are there for someone so young. Scholarship on the way - But I'd like to see him get stuck into the upcoming National League Championship first and foremost - He's played a lot of football this year, on top of collecting a few passport stamps!

Only a matter of time before Trenberth is signed.  Not sure he is ready to contribute yet at A league level but they will want to lock him up soon.

What are the rules regarding contracted players playing in the National League?

If it limits their ability to get significant game time, we probably should hold off.

Kids at that age have to be playing, not training with the first team.

I believe all we're waiting on now is an announcement.

Added effect in that it will be good to show a lot of his fellow talented classmates that this is the way to go in their footballing journeys too.

David Ball played in the National league a couple of years back.  Expect players not in match day squads to get some National League minutes.

Now LBS has gone, I'll be harping on about Loke, until he's given a decent go at RB, particularly if the fullbacks are the only true wide players. In the limited chances he had, he showed a lot of attacking flair. Hard to say how good he is though, still pretty much untested.

Loke got badly shown up on D in an early Auckland derby last season at the ROF. In his defence it was the time of Chiefy's very high line.

But no one will know Loke more than Greenacre. Had him as his Weenix captain for a time, plus also at last year's U20 WC in Chile.

If he's good enough Greeny will play him.
