To be fair to Eze, Kaltak was all over him, physically, and wasnt being called for anything, so maybe hamming up the contact was a way to get the ref to pay more attention.
I didn't see a lot of play acting from him at all, went down under contact and Kaltak got away with it a few times. The length of time he stays down was more the issue, but Abraham let them kick him up and down the pitch.
I actually thought both the Nix & AFC were on the end of some harsh calls in the fouling department. Maybe the refs want to lay the law down?
Eze, needs to abandon the dropping at any touch crap because he actually offers us a much bigger, better presence up front. Congratulations to young Loke on making his debut. Well done young fella.
After 20 minutes I thought we were going to get thrashed but for their disallowed goal. Certainly have a slow turning circle at the back but our new CB is a great player for us in the making. As someone else said, it gives us some spine, with Rufer and Eze up front.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!
Anyone know the foul count? It seemed to me that Perth were continuously trying to disrupt through fouling both on contact and in late arrival/contact, taking the ball player out after they had passed the ball. Certainly, not every foul was penalised, so perhaps the foul count would be misleadng anyway. It was actually good to see our new players responding strongly to what was being dished out to them.
Perth 18 to 8 Wgtn
Should have been more to Perth. Some more yellows should have been handed out, but the ref sort of forgot after playing advantage.
Risdon has always been a thug and somehow gets ridiculous license.
And to cap it off of course there’s a yellow for time wasting, when you’re better off punting the ball high into their half and clattering the players in the air- time wasted and no yellow.

The Aussie commentators on the radio seemed to think he got done dirty a couple of times.

Wootton put his knee into the back of Eze's hammy area, and the Nigerian was lying on the ground yelling out with such volume, I thought he'd broken his leg or something. Within a minute or so he was up running around. You could hear the Perth crowd giving him an earful after that.

I can only think of one instance where it was more Eze tripping himself up (him and Kaltak going up the line) where he embellished a little bit, but otherwise he got a work over. Wooton should have gotten yellow for the shirt tug, stopped Eze being a part of a promising transitional moment.
People are being too hard on Eze. It was his first AL game. He will now know what that the league is like and adjust. He’s going to meet lots of thugs like Risdon and AL refs who let this stuff go. I thought he had one of the best débutes from a Nix 9 for a long time. Great goal but also I thought his link play was exceptional. He made some really good one touch layoffs. For a big guy he has some nice skills( as apposed to that donkey AFC signed) Plus he was still putting him self about at the end of the match. If we can give him good service he will scores plenty of goals this season

Yeah that was a bad miss from the ref. Gets a yellow there and he probably doesn't dive in at the end and Piper has a good break on. There was another late hit on someone in that play too.
New game plan off to good start, says Phoenix coach Giancarlo Italiano
After having 70% of the game’s possession, head coach Giancarlo Italiano was satisfied with his Wellington Phoenix side’s first A-League match playing with a high-line game plan.
Conceding there were “going to be teething issues”, Italiano was pleased the side’s new playing style achieved a 2-2 draw on the road against Perth Glory.
“Two-nil down to come back to get a result away from home, especially in Perth, I’ll take it,” Italiano told the media post-match.
“There’s no perfect system. If we want to have more of the ball and be this team on the front foot, we need to be more adventurous, and that’s the high line.
“The most important thing is the players don’t lose faith in the system and see … that because we’re playing the high line we’re creating the chances.
“70% possession in a game. I don’t recall us ever having 70% in a game, even against 10 men. Every game we’ve had has been about 65% possession, so there’s a consistent picture there.
“But for me, if you have that much ball, you should be scoring a lot more goals, I think. It’s just now a matter of the team building that maturity for the season.”
Perth Glory got off to a strong start in the ‘Distance Derby’, leading 2-0 after 25 minutes.
“I thought we started slow,” Italiano said. “We couldn’t adjust to their directness. Obviously, they’d planned against our high line, and every time the ball was loose, they were just playing balls in behind us.
“But as the game panned out, especially on the right hand side once we started pulling out the wingback and cutting inside it felt like our gameplan started working.
“There was belief growing but the goal was perfect timing, just before halftime.
“And it was a great goal for the second goal. I was so happy. It was something that we planned; early delivery behind with a player coming in at the back stick and I thought it was an unbelievable finish from Carlo.”
He did have a very disrupted last season for WU with injuries though and when he was fit, was almost never in the starting lineup during his time there. A big contrast to when he was at WS prior.
Hopefully with some more consistent game time, and keeping himself injury free, he can offer something.
Sorry it was actually the latter stages of 23/24 through to the first few rounds of 24/25 when he was injured. Before and after his return from injury he was almost always coming off the bench at WU.
Me being my usual messy self.
Najjirine has always looked below average to me and I was really surprised we signed him
Armiento at least has something about him even if he doesn't set world on fire

There's not been many better all round debuts by an import, fullstop.
I thought Brisbane looked good against Sydney FC in Round 1 and it will be a tough test for us on Sunday afternoon. A good combative performance will bring the paying public back again.
Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Not universal. In lieu of a stream I appreciated it, but it’s annoying to be paying $20 for one game a round which seems invariably to be Auckland and have sod all communication from the club or league…it’s almost as if they don’t want fans of the league.
Sydney lost to Adelaide I think. However, it doesn't distract from the main point made. A good performance will help bring the fans back.Mainland FC

Eze was better than Taggert 100%. With James and Eze I think we nailed our import recruitment this season. Armentino looks to have a great left foot…..good to see him make team of the week. I really hope Najjarin works out. It’s a key position and we need someone creative there. Chico would have been great with our current tactics.

Sorry, Macarthur not Sydney FC. Well spotted.

If that turns out to be true about James and Eze wonder how many will give Chief any credit. Because there has been plenty of negativity about both those signings.

Big call to say we've nailed our imports after one game. James and Eze are promising but Oluwayemi, ishige and nagasawa need to improve considerably to be at the level you'd expect from your imports.

People get very easy excited. I like to add: "It seems a lot of people in the sporting world have short memories... Chief has built up a lot of credit" -- David Dome
Nagasawa had a disappointing first season, but he was right there in quality with James & Eze on Saturday. Deserved his MOTM. Can't remember him playing many similar passes to Kosta like the one he assisted Eze on which is a good sign but consistency will be the real challenge.
The new style of play seems likely to play to Ishige and Oluwayemi's strengths as well, though Josh was a little disappointing on the 2 goals we conceded when his shot stopping last season was outstanding.

Dome's referencing credit built in season 1 of Chief's reign. Season 2 went a little pear shape and probably burned through some of his rope, this season will be the test for how much more Welnix will be prepared to Chief if results dont improve.
After game one, there are clear signs that some of the pre-season concerns have been addressed. There were still some early worries with the defence but I think Hughes' return will help there. On attack we look pretty good, scoring two good goals.

To be fair I was negative about our entire squad, and while I still think we may be too short, I at least have an ounce of hope. I thought both were great.
It's only one game so who knows how they'll end up, but promising signs. Nagasawa also looked like an actual footballer for the first time - he never really found a position last season but in behind the striker linking midfield to attack seems to suit him. I think his long passing is super inconsistent so he doesn't really work deeper.
Pretty sure i used the words "if that turns out to be true" so while im happy with the first up efforts of both im encouraged with what i have seen that both wont be any where near as bad as some were suggesting. Was very much a trial game against Olympic but i thought both showed enough signs in that game they could turn out to be useful.

That was a tongue in cheek comment about the general hype her after ONE game that we did not even win and people already forgot the horror show last season. I'm still very skeptic, but time will tell and not like be to much of party pooper. We had two nice goals. I only watched the first half which was 75% a clown show.
Perth could only manage 30% possession last night against Wellington, unable to exert any sort of control on the match.
Wellington were able to create consistent 4v3's against the top line, and 3v2's in midfield. If Rufer or Nagasawa weren't dropping into the defensive line, they were hovering behind the pressing actions like below.
Besides some good energy early on, and a couple of decent moments while Wellington were deep in their own half, Perth's 5-2-3 struggled to contain the subtle movements and changing dynamics of Wellington's build-up.
The 5-2-3 can force you to be passive because you lack the extra player high, but there were a lot of uncoordinated defensive actions which stretched their lines, a lot of which we also saw last season.
Wellington's defenders were patient on the ball, while the players ahead manipulated Perth's front two lines.
O'Neill makes a movement towards Nagasawa here, but if you are the only player to jump, then it pulls apart the shape. The central pass opens up to the player between the lines.
Kaltak can't jump because it's not a short vertical movement. Wellington knew they could easily keep the 3 CB's pinned, while they used their advantages everywhere else to dominate possession.
For the goal just before HT, Wootton and Risdon find themselves attracted to the players between the lines. These are the movements you need from the outside CB's higher up in a coordinated manner with the front players help prevent the opposition from getting into the final third.
While defending deep, all these movements do is negate the last-line advantage you get from having five defenders on the pitch.
The distance between the midfield two and defensive line made it easier for Wellington to consistently have players between the lines, either using them as a passing option, or to move markers around.
Plenty of work to do for Perth if they are going to have a better season than last. It's still very hesitant out of possession, which is making it harder to consistently create a threat when they do get the ball.
Perth and Wellington both used a back 5 setup during the defensive moment, but Wellington were rarely pinned back into theirs for prolonged periods.
A big reason for this was their counter-press — how they managed the 'micro transitions' after turnovers, like below, aiming to win the ball back quickly before needing to drop into their defensive shape, and therefore keeping Perth in theirs.
Having a well structured build-up helps you maintain an effective counter-press because players are within manageable distances to access the ball. The longer and more direct you play, the greater the distance between players, making it harder to effectively execute this.
It also showed a foul off the ball by Perth, after our player released the ball to Payne advancing on the sideline. Should have been a yellow after the goal was scored.

That was Risdon on Najjarine and I think he did end up getting booked for that.
From memory this was kinda the basic plan for last year, maybe tweaked a bit with less rushing with the ball, our careful build up play looked really good at times and Perth's star defence struggled to manage the attacks form all angles.
