The last ever Distance Derby.

2am finishing time is definitely past my bed time. What are the odds of the full game, spoilers free, being uploaded on KeepUp by the next morning?

Looking like the worst of the (current) Perth heatwave should have subsided to give the lads a fighting chance.
Sunday just gone it was still 38 degrees at 7pm. Summer football eh

I was happily settling in to watch the Macarthur game when unexpected friends turned up and I could not finish. By about 11pm same evening the Keepup crew had the full game uploaded which was brilliant. I could fast forward through the early bits I saw and the halftime break. Bliss. Not sure if it would be the same for Perth game due to lateness, but I hope to see it on Sunday morning.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Except they don't. It might be further as the crow flies, but in terms of actual travel time Wellington is still further.

They may even fly the direct route Perth - Auckland if it still operates like it used to.  For Perth to Wellington, there had to be at least one stopover for sure, I think Brisbane or Sydney.

Wellington could be the Travel Time Derby then?

Wellington travels further because there's no direct flight. But the longest trip in domestic football is in the Coupe De France which has teams from French overseas territories (including in the Pacific) competing.

But, if it's decided that the distance derby is between Perth and Auckland, what happens if we're holding it? Do we forfeit it?

Who really cares - it was a manufactured derby so we could be involved in one, the rationale behind it was due to being the longest away trip in a national league? Compared to an international cup?.
Come next season we have an NZ derby and when Canberra get their act together we'll have the capital city derby. Auckland can have the distance derby if they want it.
Besides I much prefer our genuine angst with WU for a rival/derby match.

Does the Back Bencher have any Australian political puppets, that could be ‘borrowed’?

Drape a Bob Hawke in an over sized Canberra jersey alongside a Phoenix wearing David Lange. They then have a pen shootout on the field at HT.

Should add Hawke loved a sporting event. Famous for skulling beers at the cricket. Lange from memory he was a league fan. But yeah some take the piss of politicians efforts, hopefully happen with the Nix verus Canberra games.

There are precedents.
The America’s Cup is the oldest continuously awarded trophy in the world. It predates the American Civil War. Between 1851 and 1983, the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) had won every race and cockily bolted the Cup to a stand in their trophy room.

Rufer in is a really big +
Kosta (given his form) is possibly our biggest 'out' of the season...

We really are just holding guys together with tape at this time of the season it seems. Hopefully we're managing the niggles as best we can. Would expect Kraev and Payne to come straight back into the starting XI come the weekend.

Thats just another 'problem' for us. All the guys with recent injury troubles - Old, Payne, Rufer & now Kosta, are well and truly deserving of call ups to the AW's.

When I say problem that's not being disingenuous in any way either. All names mentioned have been absolutely fantastic so far this season, and all would be fully deserving of an international call up. It might just be better if one or two of them got a chance to rest up - I'm not seeing it for this window though given the profile of the games lined up for us.

At least Zawada is back hopefully fit enough to start and then OVH to replace him at 60 mins.

I would think Zawada might come on later instead of starting and playing first part of the game.  He is not a very fast runner and could be way more effective coming on for David Ball, for example.

Getting the full squad back for the business end of the season.

Be interesting to see how Chiefy juggles this. I've seen Perth run teams ragged in the last 20 minutes this season, especially in home games. That's when I'd be wanting Salas on, not one of the young guys. Probably goes for Zawada too: play the first half tight (hopefully) with OVH up top, bring on Zawada and Kraev 2nd half so that Perth can't just relax, knowing we've only got a tiring Old that might be a goal scoring danger.

Perth have a really dynamic frontline. I think they will be much more of a handful than Macarthur.

Glory have also had a day's rest more than the Nix, and have not had to travel. In form, unbeaten in 5, they will be tough.

Nix have been a bit lucky their last few games, CCM & MAC were both coming off short turnarounds.

Good that we went straight to Perth though. A bit of time to climatize to weather and time zone. Looks like high 30 temps there today but dropping back to high 20's tomorrow.
That few extra days in Perth will make a big difference for us. Especially those in the squad first time to travel Wgtn - Perth for a football match.
