I think the fact it was point blank range affects the decision. One thing to have your arm out when you can feasibly anticipate the cross/shot, another when it is unexpectedly kicked within a metre of you

I don't care how it is done. I am just happy for the win! Okay it is maybe just going over my head. But why was Hughes angry? That head knock was nasty. From what it looked he wasn't happy getting subbed (when at the bench) but like why? Surely he'd know it wasn't safe to continue. I get frustrations like in the moment but still

Also do wonder. Why isn't Carlo playing? I get different coaches have different preferences ect but like was on bench but didn't play last week. Only came on to replace Hughes this week

That was a perfect pass from LBS. Perfect timing, weight, placement and technique, curled with the outside of the foot. Eze had aeons to put it away.
Not many A league players can do that, and it changed the game. Pure class.
Not the first time LBS has done this either. Again, he's a game breaker, should be starting!
LKH starting instead of Edwards too please.

Checked with my dad who's an experienced ref (Mainland league) and he backs you up - too close and natural position.

What a great goal to win it and great lead up play. LBS is class.

Also that was absolutely a penalty at the end. Still, I’ll take the win.

Auckland losing really complicated our push up the ladder but we’re on track.

I don't think Carlo is starting as he doesn't fit the profile of player Greenie wants as one of the 10s. Greenie has prioritised players with their stronger foot opposite to the side they start on, so Carlo would be up against Ramy/Kartum (and I think  Kartum has looked tidy when coming on).

Plus he's gone to the back four with Edwards fit again and stronger defensively than Carlo. (With the bonus that the mixed performing James goes to the bench, with Hughes and the - long contracted  - Tuiloma as the CB pairing).

LBS looks a better sub for the sort of sub role Carlo might play. Khatum better if you want to sub one of the two 10s.

Think you might also find he may have been PO with the realization he may not be able to play next week due to concussion protocols. Because it looked to be a bad one.

Will definitely be out next week as they made a concussion substitution to take him off. Had already used our 5 subs before then.

Should add here that it's the international break next week too guys. We're back in the first week of April.

Rest that noggin Hughesy. We'll need you at the top of your game in Melbourne. Another excellent shift from him today.

Was following the game on Twitter, what a great weekend. Who’d have thought we’d get two back to back 6 pointers? Hopefully Hughes is ok, was some knock to the head. Been a while since I’ve seen that much blood!

Would be a shame not to see Carlo return next season, but not sure why he’d hang around if he’s not getting any game time. Fingers crossed rufer gets that deal now…he’s definitely picked up the performances over the last couple of weeks.

Happy Saturday nix fans, a very happy one indeed!

P.s thanks for getting the site back, it looks great!

I'm just happy that Greenie has make some tweaks which has made our defence significantly better.  Greenie doesn't imagine tactics, he just implements what's needed and what's practical.

Just finished watching the replay.

Cracking game.  Definitely feel for brizzie fans as that hand ball 100% should have been a pen, but we missed a pen for the same reason a few weeks ago.  So from a Nix fan perspective I appreciate consistency.

Jesus so much blood from thay head knick though.

I also didn't realise (until just rewatching now) that the player for Brisbane involved in it was allowed to stay on? So now knowing irritabillity/rage can come from it I can somewhat well kinda not really see why Hughes wasn't wanting to come off. The ref even had to whistle for him to get off

Part of the success is using Edwards as LFB instead of Arniento even if Brisbane still got way too much space attacking on that side.  I do hope there will be room for Carlo on the park, he is such a good player to watch.
It was a marginal win for us, but I imagine humidity was a factor in our performance.

Perfect way to bring in a new look forum as well.

Honestly never thought the forum's design/layout was ever going to change, but I'm not complaining, fantastic job Nik, it's great to be back.

The international break comes at a helpful time for Hughes. So good to see Eze back on the scoresheet and scoring a late winner too.

After the IB, more minutes for LBS please!

I'd like to see a reply as I hadn't thought it had come off the body at all. Just that it was close proximity and his arm was out, with ball hitting the elbow.
On TV it sounded like they didn't even check it either while the Hughes stuff was going on.

Yeah I'm not really sure what Oluwayemi was doing, he must've completely misjudged the flight of the ball as it hit his leg yet he wasn't trying to get low for it at all
Even if the ball had missed Josh it would have hit the Roar striker and gone in. Josh completely mis-judged it but you have to ask why the fuck Hughes was doing crouching down to get away from the ball at the last minute???

Well that was a pleasant result to end the day on. Happy to see results turning around after the derby, even if we haven't been trumping the best of the best a win is always appreciated. I'd say finals isn't fully unatainable (If only for back to back games at AAMI)

The difficult scenario is that, similar to the breakaway goal, we had opportunities to get eze in on goal but piper doesn’t have the passing ability. So an obvious strike partner for eze is an LBS type player. But piper is scoring and scored the first goal? So what to do??

The obvious answer is to drop the does-nothing Najjarine for Kartum or LBS, rather than Piper.

I have always thought Piper is better coming on at 60 mins every game when the game is bit more scrappy and then playing a more technical player in his spot for better control of the ball and chance creation when the game isn't as open. But he's been a danger off set pieces and you get those at all times of the game, so I'd probably lean towards LBS starting on the right with Piper still starting and just hope LBS and Eze link up more from the right.

I think Retre has been solid last couple games, but it would be interesting to see if Sander could play that role. He's actually played as a 8 most of his career and he'd definitely play more positively than Retre but would depend if he can do the defensive duties well too.

At 17 (?) LBS should be used sparingly and i  daresay Greenacre is in a better position than any of us to make a judgment call there.

Could the nix realistically make finals? After the derby it felt like the season was basically over, but now we're literally 1 point behind 6th Macarthur. We play twice at AAMI park which is making me hesitate, but we're so close that it doesn't feel impossible anymore

Yeah get that to some degree but why should he be used spareringly.Other teams seem to be able to give some of their players about the same age extended game time. Yet the Phoenix who claim to have a youth focus dont seem to want to do that with LBS. Despite him making two very good passes that have lead to goals. I for one just dont get just it, like i dont get with us needing to chase games Armiento is left on the sidelines despite scoring 5.

Not to rain on your parade but the chances of making the finals are really, really low. We've done well to beat Perth and Brisbane but frankly both are in decline and the rest of teams we play will be a lot tougher, especially, as you say, the two Melbourne clubs.

For me I'm just happy to see us salvage some club pride under Greenacre. It's encouraging to see us grind out a couple of proper old school wins that have made the best of what we've got in the squad, which, let's be honest ain't that flash.

Really has been a great weekend to be a Nix fan.

Women and men both win again, men win at a Nix graveyard, a penalty appeal goes our way, AFC lose, Newcastle are back to four points clear at the top going into the break. Can't remember the last time we had a weekend where this many things went our way.

I'm ok with Armiento not playing personally.

He did well individually in an under performing team in part, because I felt he played as an individual. His option taking was often poor and selfish. I also haven't really seen him take a player on the outside, which I want from a wide player. He has a hell of a shot, but not much outside of that.

Edwards was poor for me. His distribution needs work.

Rufer looks like a new player. The difference a coach can make for a player.

Edwards plays because he is our only specialist LB. Armiento is a LW.
I really like the work Greenacre is doing. Sensible methodical, hes getting everything in order.
It just shows what happens when you get coaches who have been around in the football world. We have Greenie and Bev and our teams are looking like proper football teams. Hopefully we have learnt a lesson in coach recruitment. Experiance really counts

IMHO LKH is better in every respect than Edwards at LB. Speed, strength, tackling, heading, ball control, passing, creativity, vision, throw-ins. Seems to  have a better shot and cross too. He's also more inclined to look for attacking options, to keep a move going. Edwards is often timid and kills a move with a backpass. I don't think his play so far is at at A league level.
